What Should You Do When the Stock Market Falls? A Practical Guide for Long-Term Investors

A market decline alone does not decide whether you should trade. Review your goals, cash needs, risk tolerance and portfolio allocation before making a change.

When the stock market falls, pause before making a trade and check whether your financial plan still fits your goals, time horizon, cash needs and ability to bear losses. A decline alone does not tell you whether to sell, buy or change your investments. First assess your circumstances and portfolio; if the mix has drifted from your intended allocation, consider whether rebalancing is appropriate after weighing possible taxes and transaction costs.

Start with the decision, not the headline

A falling market can make a long-term plan feel suddenly uncertain. But the market’s movement and your need for the money are different questions. A price decline does not, by itself, show that your goal has changed, that your portfolio is unsuitable, or that a particular investment should be sold.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) cautions investors against making rash portfolio changes in response to volatility. Selling after a decline can also mean missing a subsequent recovery—but no source can promise when, or whether, a recovery will happen. That warning is not an instruction to keep every holding regardless of its risks or your circumstances. It is a reason to examine the plan before reacting.

Use this sequence: identify whether anything about your life or financial needs has changed; compare your current investments with the allocation you intended; assess diversification and the distance from that plan; then consider whether a change is warranted and what it might cost. This is general US investor education, not individualized investment or tax advice.

It can help to distinguish three questions that often get blurred together during a sell-off: Has the purpose or timing of the money changed? Does the portfolio still fit your circumstances? And, if the portfolio has drifted, is there a reason to restore the planned mix now? The first two questions are about your plan; the third is about maintaining it. A dramatic market move does not answer any of them on its own.

Check whether your circumstances have changed

The right allocation depends on the investor, not on a market headline. SEC investor education identifies goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial situation as relevant. Before deciding what to do, write down the answers to these questions:

  • When will you need the money? Money intended for a nearer-term expense has a different job from money being invested for a distant goal. The SEC notes that shorter time horizons generally call for less volatile choices.
  • What is the goal? A change in a goal—its amount, timing or importance—can justify reviewing the plan even if markets were steady.
  • Do you have a cash need? If you expect to use some of the money soon, account for that need directly. Do not treat a long-term investing approach as a reason to ignore an upcoming expense.
  • Has your financial situation changed? Changes in income, obligations or other resources can affect how much investment risk you can bear.
  • How would a further loss affect you? Consider both your willingness to tolerate a decline and your financial ability to withstand one. Being uncomfortable with volatility and being unable to absorb a loss are related but not identical concerns.

Separate a temporary emotional reaction from a material change in these answers. If the goal, time horizon or financial need has changed, reviewing the allocation may be sensible. If none has changed, that is useful context—but it does not prove that every investment in the portfolio remains appropriate.

Risk tolerance and ability to bear risk deserve separate attention. Someone may be financially able to absorb market swings but find the experience so unsettling that they are tempted to abandon the plan. Another investor may feel calm about volatility yet need the funds soon, making a loss difficult to absorb. Neither attitude alone settles the question; the investment mix should be considered against both the person’s comfort and financial circumstances.

Retirement accounts do not remove the need to think about goals and timing. The account type is part of the context, but the key questions remain when the money is expected to be used, what it is intended to fund and how much volatility the investor can tolerate and afford. A change in circumstances is a reason to review those choices, not an automatic instruction to trade.

Compare the portfolio with the plan you chose

Asset allocation is the way a portfolio is divided among categories such as stocks and bonds. It should reflect the investor’s goals, time horizon and tolerance for risk. There is no single stock-and-bond mix that can be prescribed for every long-term investor from the information here.

Review the allocation you intended to hold and compare it with what you actually own now. A fall in one part of the portfolio can leave the current mix different from the planned mix. The useful question is not simply whether stocks are down; it is whether your portfolio still matches a plan suited to your circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to check Question to ask Why it matters
Time horizon When is the money expected to be used? The time available for the goal affects how much volatility may be appropriate.
Risk tolerance and financial situation Can you bear losses emotionally and financially? An allocation that is hard to sustain or incompatible with your finances may need review.
Diversification Is the portfolio spread across and within asset classes? Concentration in one investment or area can make the result depend heavily on it.
Allocation drift How does the current mix compare with the intended mix? A material difference may prompt consideration of rebalancing.
Costs and taxes Could a proposed change trigger transaction fees or tax consequences? The effects of a trade matter alongside its intended portfolio effect.

Do not confuse “long-term” with “unchanging.” Plans can need revision when goals or circumstances change. Conversely, a market drop alone is not evidence that the plan needs to be replaced. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance treats the investor’s own time horizon and risk tolerance as central to choosing an allocation.

When comparing the current portfolio with the plan, use the actual intended allocation as your reference point rather than a market forecast or a generic rule. A falling stock market may change the relative weights of investments, but it does not tell you what allocation is right for you. The comparison is useful because it identifies whether the portfolio has moved away from a choice you made for your own circumstances.

Check diversification without treating it as a safety net

Diversification means spreading investments across and within asset classes rather than relying on a narrow set of holdings. It can reduce the effect that a poor result in one holding has on the overall portfolio. It cannot prevent losses when markets fall, and a diversified portfolio can still decline.

Look beyond the number of positions. A portfolio can contain many holdings yet remain concentrated in a particular asset class or area. Review whether the investments are spread both across categories and within them, and whether that structure still corresponds to the plan you chose. The purpose of this review is to understand concentration risk, not to find a combination that guarantees protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SEC’s diversification material makes the distinction important: spreading investments may manage risk, but it does not eliminate market risk. Do not interpret a market-wide decline as proof that diversification has failed, or interpret diversification as a promise that the portfolio cannot lose value.

Think of diversification as a way to avoid depending too heavily on a narrow group of investments, not as insurance against a broad decline. Different holdings can perform differently, and spreading exposure may reduce the impact of a poor result in one area. But when markets broadly fall, losses can affect a diversified portfolio too. That is why diversification belongs alongside an appropriate allocation and a plan that reflects the investor’s circumstances.

Decide whether rebalancing is relevant

Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio back toward its intended asset allocation. It is a way to restore the chosen mix, not a way to predict the market’s next move or guarantee a better result. If your current allocation has moved away from the plan, compare the possible methods and their consequences before acting.

Adjust contributions

If you are adding money to the portfolio, directing contributions toward parts of the allocation that are below their intended share may help move the mix back toward the plan without selling existing holdings. Whether this is practical depends on your contribution pattern and account options. It does not remove investment risk.

Buy or sell holdings

Trades can also change the portfolio’s mix. Before selling or buying, consider transaction costs and possible tax consequences. A trade that restores the target allocation may still have costs, so assess the expected portfolio effect alongside those consequences rather than treating rebalancing as automatically beneficial.

Use a consistent review method

SEC materials describe both interval-based and threshold-based approaches. An interval-based approach checks the allocation on a recurring schedule; a threshold-based approach prompts a review when the mix has moved sufficiently far from its intended level. The sources do not establish one universally correct schedule or threshold. Choose a method that fits the plan, and avoid turning every market fluctuation into a reason to trade. SEC guidance says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently.

Rebalancing is a maintenance decision, not a bet that the part of the portfolio that has fallen will quickly rebound. Restoring an allocation can mean increasing exposure to an area that has become underweight, but it does not guarantee that the investment will rise or that the decision will pay off over a particular period. The point is to keep the portfolio aligned with the plan you chose, if that plan still suits you.

Before placing a trade, consider the full effect of the method you choose. Contribution adjustments may be possible without selling existing investments, while trades can bring transaction fees and tax consequences into the decision. If you are uncertain about those consequences, particularly the tax treatment of a proposed transaction, seek advice tailored to your situation rather than assuming that every account or investor will be affected in the same way.

Understand the choices before taking action

When markets are falling, the most useful choice depends on what you find in the review—not on a universal rule to buy, sell or hold. Use the following distinctions to organize the decision:

What you find What it may call for What to consider first
Your goals, time horizon and financial situation are unchanged, and the portfolio remains aligned with your plan. A decline alone may not justify changing the plan. Whether the urge to act is a reaction to volatility rather than a changed need.
Your circumstances or the timing of a goal have changed. Review whether the allocation still fits. The new time horizon, cash needs, risk tolerance and capacity for loss.
The current allocation has drifted from the plan. Consider whether rebalancing is appropriate. Contribution-based adjustments, possible trades, taxes and fees.
The portfolio is concentrated or difficult to understand. Review diversification and the role of each holding. Whether the investments are spread across and within asset classes; diversification does not prevent losses.
You cannot determine whether the plan fits your situation. Consider seeking individualized guidance from a qualified financial professional. Ask about the professional’s qualifications and how any advice applies to your circumstances.

This framework is for making a decision about the portfolio as a whole. It is not a recommendation to buy or sell any particular security. The SEC’s investor materials do not support a universal allocation recommendation, and individual tax consequences depend on the investor’s situation.

These choices are not necessarily permanent or mutually exclusive. An investor may review the plan after a life change, decide that its allocation remains suitable, and still rebalance if the mix has drifted. Or the investor may decide that the allocation itself needs reconsideration because the goal or cash need has changed. Clarifying which question you are answering can help prevent a portfolio-maintenance step from being mistaken for a broader change in strategy.

Be careful about trying to time the market

Short-term trading in response to a falling market can turn a long-term plan into a series of guesses about when to exit and when to return. In its October 5, 2026 World Investor Week bulletin, the SEC warned that trying to time the market might lead to buying when an investment has reached all-time highs and selling when the market is falling, potentially reducing investment returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SEC also describes patient, periodic investing as a way that may help mitigate volatility and short-term swings. “May help” is not a guarantee of profit, protection from losses or suitability for money needed soon. Periodic investing is a process for investing over time, not proof that every investor should add money during every decline. Any contribution should fit the person’s goals and financial circumstances.

Likewise, a long-term view is not a forecast that prices will recover on a particular timetable. It means evaluating decisions against the intended goal and plan rather than assuming that a recent price move alone dictates the next action.

FINRA Senior Vice President of Investor Education Gerri Walsh put the emphasis on choices an investor can control in a 2018 article on market volatility: “So control what you can.Staying diversified, rebalancing to stay aligned with your goals and taking a long-term view are the best ways to weather any financial storm.” The statement is a reminder to focus on process, not a promise that those steps prevent losses. Market risk remains, and the investor’s own goals and circumstances still determine whether a particular approach fits.

A practical review you can complete before trading

  1. Pause. Do not place a trade solely because a headline or a sharp price move has frightened you. Give yourself time to review the decision deliberately.
  2. Write down the money’s purpose and timing. Identify the goal and when you expect to need the funds. Note any upcoming cash need that should be considered separately.
  3. Reassess your circumstances. Check whether your goals, financial situation, willingness to bear risk or ability to withstand losses have changed.
  4. Record the intended allocation. Use the plan you chose for your circumstances as the comparison point; do not substitute a generic allocation rule.
  5. Compare the current portfolio with that plan. Note where the mix differs and whether the portfolio is diversified across and within asset classes.
  6. Consider a rebalancing method only if relevant. Compare adjustments to contributions with buying or selling holdings. Account for fees and taxes before trading.
  7. Make the decision in light of the goal. If you cannot establish whether a change is appropriate, consider consulting a qualified financial professional for advice tailored to your situation.

This checklist does not require you to trade. Its purpose is to make the reason for any action explicit: a changed goal, a changed financial circumstance, or a decision to restore a planned allocation—not simply the fact that prices have fallen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As you work through it, keep a clear record of the assumptions behind the decision: the goal, expected timing, chosen allocation and any reason for changing it. That can make it easier to distinguish a deliberate plan review from an impulse to react to the latest market move. It also gives you a useful starting point for a conversation with a financial professional if you decide you need individualized help.

When outside help may be useful

Individualized advice may be useful when you have a near-term spending need, a major change in circumstances, uncertainty about the allocation, or difficulty understanding the tax and fee effects of a proposed trade. A qualified financial professional can assess details that a general article cannot, including the investor’s full financial situation and the tax treatment of a particular decision.

Ask how the recommendation relates to your goals and time horizon, what risks and costs it carries, and whether it would change the allocation you intended to hold. Do not assume that a professional or service is endorsed by a government agency unless that endorsement is actually established.

Useful questions to ask include: What part of my plan does this recommendation address? How does it account for when I need the money and how much loss I can withstand? What fees or potential tax consequences should I understand? How would the recommendation change my portfolio’s allocation and diversification? These questions can help you evaluate whether advice responds to your circumstances rather than simply echoing a market prediction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I sell my investments when the stock market falls?

A decline alone is not enough to determine whether you should sell. First review whether your goal, time horizon, cash needs, financial situation or risk tolerance has changed, and compare the portfolio with the plan you chose. Selling after a decline may mean missing a later recovery, but no recovery or timetable is guaranteed; the right decision depends on your circumstances and holdings.

Should I buy stocks during a market decline?

There is no universal instruction to buy during a decline. Periodic investing may help mitigate volatility and short-term swings, according to SEC investor education, but it does not guarantee profit or make investing suitable for money you need soon. Any contribution should fit your goals and financial situation.

Does diversification protect my portfolio from losses?

Diversification can reduce the effect of a poor result in one holding by spreading investments across and within asset classes. It does not eliminate market risk, guarantee protection or prevent a diversified portfolio from falling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I rebalance my portfolio?

SEC materials describe interval-based reviews and threshold-based reviews, but do not set one schedule or threshold for everyone. Rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. Consider the plan, how far the portfolio has drifted, and potential transaction fees and tax consequences.

What if I need some of my invested money soon?

A near-term cash need matters when reviewing the plan. The SEC notes that shorter time horizons generally call for less volatile choices. Consider the expected spending need directly rather than treating a long-term investing approach as a reason to ignore it.

Can a financial professional tell me what to do?

A qualified financial professional can provide individualized guidance based on details a general article cannot assess. Ask how advice relates to your goals and time horizon, what risks and costs it carries, and whether it changes your intended allocation. Do not assume that a professional or service is endorsed by a government agency unless that endorsement is established.

The Bottom Line

When the stock market falls, do not let the headline make the decision for you. Recheck your goals, time horizon, cash needs and ability to bear losses, then compare your current portfolio with the allocation you chose for your circumstances. If rebalancing is relevant, weigh contribution adjustments against trades and consider possible taxes and fees. A long-term process can help organize decisions, but neither diversification nor periodic investing guarantees protection from losses.
