The accounts raise a practical question: how much control do workers have over their pay and conditions when staffing is outsourced and compensation is tied partly to output? The videos are individual accounts, not a representative survey of every Shein warehouse worker.
What did the workers say in their videos?
WIRED reported on September 27, 2024, that it analyzed more than 30 videos tagged with Shein’s Chinese name, Xiyin (希音), across four Chinese platforms. Workers described picking targets, long shifts and fatigue, and some discussed desired monthly earnings. WIRED said it corroborated accounts using local job listings, Chinese-language news reports and other publicly available information. It attempted to contact workers featured in the videos; some could not be reached, and others did not respond. WIRED’s investigation therefore documents worker testimony, not a comprehensive survey or a verified account of every worker’s experience.
How are Shein warehouse workers paid?
WIRED’s analysis of worker videos and local job listings described compensation as a monthly base salary plus pay that could vary with productivity. That arrangement can give workers a chance to earn more when output and demand are high, but it can also make total earnings sensitive to order volume and the availability of work. The reported terms should not be treated as identical across jobs or contracts.
WIRED also reported Shein’s estimate, based on vendor records, of about RMB 7,000 a month for junior warehouse workers and more than RMB 12,000 on average for senior workers. Shein reiterated the figures in its response. They are company estimates, not independently verified amounts or guaranteed wages for every worker. Shein’s published response provides the company’s account.

What does labor dispatch mean in China?
Labor dispatch is an arrangement in which a staffing agency employs temporary workers and handles matters such as wages, benefits and other conditions, while the workers perform labor for a company using their services. As Temple University associate professor Lu Zhang put it in WIRED’s report, “That separates the employment relationship from the actual use of labor.” Zhang added: “It allows companies to achieve labor on demand while cutting costs.”
WIRED said many workers at Shein fulfillment centers in Guangdong were recruited through labor dispatch or similar outsourced arrangements. Shein confirmed that third-party vendors staff the vast majority of its warehouse operations, but did not specify what proportion of workers were formally classified as labor-dispatch staff. Zhang estimated that China had roughly 40 million labor-dispatch workers—about 10 percent of the labor force—as of 2022; WIRED noted that official statistics are not available.

What did Shein say about conditions and oversight?
Shein told WIRED in 2024 that its practices complied with local law and industry standards, and that it was investing tens of millions of dollars in governance and compliance. A company spokesperson told WIRED: “Shein’s practices are aligned with industry standards and comply with local laws and regulations.”
In its published response, Shein said warehouse partners must comply with local laws and that warehouses use both Shein employees and outsourced workers. It reported audits at 22 Shein-operated warehouse facilities in China in 2024: one received a B grade and the others received A grades. These are Shein’s reported audit results. WIRED said Shein had not specified whether the staffing agencies supplying outsourced workers were included in the audit scope, so the facility figures do not establish the coverage or compliance of every external agency.

What does “going public” mean in this story?
In the 2024 headline, “going public” refers to workers speaking publicly through videos, not to Shein itself listing shares. WIRED’s 2024 report said the company was reportedly exploring a London listing after opposition to its New York IPO effort. That is historical context, not the latest reported plan.
Le Monde reported on August 24, 2026, that Shein announced an initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange scheduled to begin September 1, 2026. That account establishes an announcement and a planned date; it does not confirm that trading began. Le Monde’s report should not be read as proof that the listing was completed.
