In a TechCrunch interview published April 29, 2022, Sequoia investor Shaun Maguire argued that the firm intended to stay engaged in crypto even if a downturn pushed some newer entrants to retreat. He also challenged two easy assumptions: that crypto venture capital commitment is always durable, and that decentralization is automatically better for users.

What was Maguire arguing about Sequoia’s crypto commitment?

TechCrunch’s April 29, 2022, interview came after Sequoia announced a dedicated crypto sub-fund earlier that year. The article also described the firm’s earlier crypto startup investments; those details reflect Sequoia’s position as reported at the time, not a current statement of fund size or strategy. TechCrunch’s interview is the source for Maguire’s comments and the contemporaneous account of the fund.

Maguire framed Sequoia’s decision as a firm-wide commitment, not the preference of a single investor: “When we make a decision to do something, it doesn’t happen unless the whole team is behind the decision.” He also described himself personally as “an absolute crypto maxi,” while adding that many aspects of crypto were misunderstood by the public. His personal enthusiasm and his account of the firm’s decision-making are related, but they are not the same claim.

Why did he expect some venture firms to pull back?

Maguire distinguished firms with an enduring commitment from investors who had entered crypto more recently. His view was that some of those newer participants might withdraw when market conditions became less favorable, while Sequoia planned to remain involved. He told TechCrunch, “we have permanent intentions.” That is a statement of intent in an April 2022 interview—not an independently verified guarantee of future investment activity or a prediction that every crypto investment would succeed.

The contrast was about conviction and timing, not a measured comparison of returns. The interview did not establish that traditional venture firms would outperform crypto-native funds, or vice versa. It captured Maguire’s expectation at that moment that some participation would prove cyclical.

What did Maguire think decentralization gets wrong?

He rejected the idea that decentralization is a universal fix. “Decentralization is not a silver bullet that just solves all problems and is better for everything,” he said. In his view, some computing and decision-making tasks can work better with centralized systems; the relevant question is what users gain or lose in a particular design, rather than whether a system uses decentralization as a label.

For users, he emphasized the practical ability to leave a platform while taking their identity and data with them. That kind of portability can offer meaningful control even when a service is not decentralized in every respect. It shifts the test from an abstract architecture debate to whether people can preserve access to what is theirs when they move.

Why did he caution against discarding consumer protections?

Maguire argued that established protections reflect lessons from earlier failures and should not be thrown away simply because a product is built with crypto. He suggested that crypto participants sometimes rediscover why older rules exist. At the same time, his position was not that every existing rule must remain unchanged: he allowed that parts of the system may benefit from substantial change.

His distinction is useful for evaluating financial products: innovation and user protection are not opposites by default. A new model may warrant different rules, but a claim of novelty does not by itself show that safeguards are unnecessary.

How should readers place the interview in context?

This is a historical account of Maguire’s views in 2022, not a current market outlook. The interview’s claims about a possible downturn and investor retreat should be read as his expectations at the time. Sequoia’s current profile identifies Maguire as a seed and early-stage investor and says he values founders intensely motivated by their mission; those are the firm’s own descriptions of his role and stated preferences, not independent assessments.
