Rising bond yields can pressure stock valuations and lower the market prices of existing fixed-rate bonds, but they do not automatically make stocks fall. The effect depends on why yields are rising, how investors reassess future company earnings and risk, and what your portfolio holds. That distinction matters more than any simple rule about yields and share prices moving in opposite directions.
What does a rising bond yield tell you?
A bond yield is the return investors receive relative to a bond’s price and cash flows. A rise in a Treasury yield means investors are demanding a higher return to hold that Treasury at its current price. It is not simply a readout of the Federal Reserve’s current policy rate: longer-term yields also reflect market expectations about future rates, inflation and economic growth, along with compensation investors require for holding longer maturities and taking on related risks.

That means the phrase “yields are rising” describes a market movement, not its cause. Investors may be reacting to stronger growth expectations, a change in inflation outlook, anticipated future policy rates, a higher term premium, concerns about future supply shocks, federal deficit concerns, or several factors at once. A Federal Reserve research note from February 2026 linked recent increases in far-forward rates to perceived future supply-shock risks and federal deficit concerns. That analysis describes possible influences on rate pricing; it is not a forecast of policy or a promise about what yields will do next.

Why can higher yields put pressure on stock prices?
They reduce the present value of future cash flows, all else equal
A share price reflects the market’s valuation of a company’s expected future cash flows, including the cash it may return to shareholders. Investors discount those expected future amounts to account for the time value of money and the risks of receiving them. If the relevant discount rate increases while expected cash flows and other assumptions stay the same, those distant cash flows have a lower present value.
Government-bond yields influence this calculation because they are a reference point for returns available from assets commonly treated as lower risk than equities. When real risk-free yields rise, investors may demand a higher return from shares as well. That can lower the price investors are willing to pay for a given outlook, even if the company’s expected earnings have not changed.
The effect need not be uniform across companies. A valuation that relies heavily on cash flows expected far in the future may be more exposed to a change in discount rates than one supported more by current cash flows, all else equal. That is a way to think about valuation sensitivity, not a reliable shortcut for labeling every company or predicting a universal “growth versus value” outcome. Expected earnings, risk and the price already paid for a share all matter.
Bonds can become more competitive with equities
When bonds offer higher yields, investors can compare those returns with what they expect to earn from stocks. That comparison may affect the extra return investors require for taking equity risk. Federal Reserve financial-stability analysis has described the difference between the forward earnings-to-price ratio and the real 10-year Treasury yield as a crude measure of the extra return investors require from stocks relative to risk-free bonds. It is one lens on valuation, not a complete measure of fair value or a signal that stocks must fall whenever the gap changes.

A higher bond yield does not guarantee a better investment outcome than stocks. Bond returns and stock returns involve different risks, cash flows and time horizons. Rather, a change in the return available on bonds can change the alternatives investors weigh when pricing shares.
There is no fixed stock-market reaction per percentage point
It would be misleading to say that every one-percentage-point increase in yields causes a particular percentage decline in stocks. The sources do not establish such a formula, and markets respond to more than interest rates. Investors also revise expectations for earnings and dividends, uncertainty, and the extra compensation they require for equity risk. Those changes may reinforce or offset the discount-rate effect.
Why can stocks rise while yields rise?
Growth news can lift both
If yields rise because investors expect stronger economic growth, anticipated corporate earnings may improve at the same time. In that case, better earnings expectations can support share prices even as higher yields create a valuation headwind. A 2017 Federal Reserve staff memorandum put the conditional relationship this way: “Bond yields and stock prices typically move in the same direction when asset prices are mainly driven by news about the outlook for economic growth.” The word “typically” matters: this is a description of one type of market news, not a law that predicts the next move.
Discount-rate shocks can push in opposite directions
If yields rise because the rate used to discount future cash flows has increased, without a corresponding improvement in expected company cash flows, stocks may face downward pressure. A change in risk premiums can also affect the returns investors demand from risky assets. The market response depends on which of these forces dominates and how much was already reflected in prices.

In practice, a yield move can have more than one cause. A report showing that the stock market rose during a period of higher yields does not prove that yields were irrelevant; stronger earnings or growth expectations may have outweighed the valuation pressure. Conversely, a stock decline alongside rising yields does not by itself prove rates caused the entire decline. The relationship is best understood as a set of channels that interact, not a trading signal that works from the yield direction alone.
How do higher yields affect existing fixed-rate bonds?
For an existing fixed-rate bond, the contractual coupon does not rise just because newly issued or comparable bonds offer higher yields. Buyers are generally less willing to pay the old price for those fixed payments when they can obtain a higher yield elsewhere. The existing bond’s market price therefore generally falls until its yield is competitive with the market. Investor.gov summarizes the relationship as: “Higher market interest rates → lower fixed-rate bond prices → higher fixed-rate bond yields.”
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov illustrates the relationship with a 10-year Treasury. In its example, a bond with a 3% coupon, $1,000 face value and a 3% yield has nine years remaining one year later. If comparable market rates are then 4%, the example price is $925 and the bond’s yield is 4%. This is an illustration of bond pricing, not a forecast or a claim about a typical market loss.

Price sensitivity depends on the bond
The size of a bond’s price change depends on its characteristics and the size of the market-rate change. Maturity and coupon generally matter: all else equal, a longer-maturity bond or a lower-coupon bond tends to be more sensitive to interest-rate changes than a shorter-maturity or higher-coupon bond. That is why two fixed-rate holdings can respond differently to the same change in market rates.

A price decline is not the same as every investor realizing a loss
An investor holding an individual bond to maturity receives its contractual cash flows if the issuer pays as promised, subject to issuer-payment and other risks. A lower market price still matters if the investor needs to sell before maturity, because the sale would take place at the then-current market value. The fact that a bond is held in an account does not make its market price irrelevant; it changes when that price matters to the investor’s outcome.
A bond fund is not an individual bond with one maturity date for an investor to wait out. Its net asset value reflects market prices and the portfolio’s changing holdings. The basic price-and-yield relationship is relevant to fixed-income exposure, but the Investor.gov bulletin cited here focuses on bond pricing and interest-rate risk rather than detailed fund mechanics.

The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report described Treasury yields as higher year to date through its report period by about 60 basis points for the 2-year Treasury and about 35 basis points for the 10-year Treasury. In the same report, it described the S&P 500 as up about 9% since the beginning of 2026, alongside sizable fluctuations and strong earnings growth. These are observations reported for that period, not quotes for October 2026 or a forecast.
The figures illustrate why a simple inverse rule can mislead: yields rose over the period while the broad stock index was also higher. The report’s account of strong earnings growth offers relevant context, but these figures alone do not isolate the cause of either market move or establish a general relationship for other periods. They cannot tell an individual investor what to buy or sell.

How should you assess the effect on your portfolio?
Start with your own holdings and the job each one is meant to do. A change in yields can affect stock valuations, bond market prices, and the attractiveness of new income opportunities through different channels. The right questions are about exposure, timing and your ability to tolerate fluctuations—not whether one asset class is universally “safe” when another is under pressure.
1. Identify when you may need the money
Separate money you may need soon from investments intended for a longer horizon. If you may have to sell a bond before maturity to meet a near-term need, its current market price matters. If the money is invested for a longer-term goal, temporary price changes may be easier to tolerate, but your horizon does not remove investment risk. The evidence here does not establish a specific allocation rule for either situation.
2. Check the rate sensitivity of your fixed-income holdings
For individual fixed-rate bonds, look at maturity and coupon. A longer maturity or lower coupon generally means more sensitivity to rate changes, all else equal. Consider whether you can hold the bond for its intended term and whether you might need to sell it earlier. For a bond fund, recognize that market prices affect its net asset value as its holdings change; an individual bond’s maturity framework should not be treated as a promise that a fund will return to a particular price on a specific date.

Think about whether the value you assign to an equity depends heavily on cash flows far in the future or more on current earnings. Distant expected cash flows can be more affected by discount-rate changes, all else equal, but that observation does not establish how any particular stock will perform. Changes in expected earnings, dividends, uncertainty and equity risk premiums can alter the outcome.
4. Ask what appears to be driving yields
When evaluating a market move, distinguish improving growth expectations from inflation repricing, changing expectations for policy rates, higher term premiums and risk-premium changes. These explanations can overlap. Stronger growth may benefit earnings while higher discount rates weigh on valuations; a market’s net response reflects the balance of forces rather than one headline number.
5. Match decisions to your plan, not a headline
There is no universal instruction from these relationships to sell stocks, shorten bond duration or make a particular allocation change. Before altering investments, consider your time horizon, liquidity needs, tolerance for temporary price movement and the role each holding plays in your plan. The cited evidence explains market mechanisms; it cannot determine a suitable portfolio for a particular person.
Quick Recap
Common misreadings to avoid
- “The Fed raised rates, so long-term Treasury yields must rise by the same amount.” Longer-term yields also reflect market expectations and compensation for maturity-related risks, as well as changing views about inflation, growth and risk.
- “Stocks always fall when yields rise.” Growth news can support earnings expectations and allow yields and stock prices to rise together; a discount-rate shock can create a different response.
- “My bond price fell, so I have already lost the same amount in cash.” A lower market price affects an investor who sells at that price; an individual bond held to maturity has contractual cash flows, subject to issuer payment and other risks.
- “The bond example predicts what my bond or fund will do.” The SEC’s $1,000-to-$925 example is illustrative. Actual sensitivity depends on the security’s terms and the market-rate change, and a fund has changing holdings and a market-valued net asset value.
- “A rising-yield period tells me what to change in my portfolio.” Market observations do not determine an appropriate personal allocation without knowing the investor’s goals, horizon, liquidity needs and risk tolerance.
