Luigi Mangione’s reported study of artificial intelligence and a high-school speech mentioning the “singularity” come from a December 2024 Futurism account of his then-public LinkedIn profile and graduation remarks. That reporting does not establish a link between those details and the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Later legal reporting concerns separate federal stalking charges and New York state proceedings.

What the report says about Mangione’s AI background

In a December 10, 2024 report, Futurism’s Victor Tangermann said Mangione’s then-public LinkedIn profile described him as having studied artificial intelligence as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania. The claim is based on the profile as reported by Futurism; it is not an independently verified academic record. Futurism’s account

The same report said the profile described Mangione teaching artificial intelligence to pre-collegiate students in summer 2019. Futurism also reported that Stanford told Reuters that a person with the same name was employed as a “head counselor” at the time. That wording does not independently establish that the person Stanford referred to was Mangione.

What he reportedly said about the “singularity”

Futurism reported that Mangione spoke about AI at his high-school graduation ceremony. In remarks it attributed to a speech to parents, he said: “We may have been born into one of the most exciting times on earth, regardless of the singularity,” and, “We might not recognize it in our day to day lives, but the world is changing fast.” The account does not provide independent access to the original speech.

Do these details explain the killing?

No such connection is established by the cited reporting. Futurism said it was “tough to say” whether Mangione’s reported AI teaching or data-engineering career had anything to do with his motivations. It also said whether he knew about algorithms UnitedHealth was alleged to use in claims decisions “remains unclear.” The report’s discussion of chronic back pain was an interpretation, not proof of motive.

AI study, a reference to the singularity, and claims about insurance algorithms should therefore be treated as separate reported details—not as evidence of why Thompson was killed.

What the later legal reporting establishes

Legal developments reported later are distinct from the claims about Mangione’s education and speech. On August 14, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said Mangione pleaded guilty to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of cyberstalking through interstate facilities resulting in death. The office scheduled sentencing for December 18, 2026. Its release quotes U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald saying Mangione “admitted to stalking and murdering Brian Thompson,” but that is the prosecutor’s characterization; the release describes the plea counts as two stalking offenses. U.S. Department of Justice release

Separately, the Associated Press reported on October 2, 2026, that Mangione had pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges and that his New York state murder proceedings had been postponed indefinitely while his lawyers sought dismissal. In an August 17 report, AP said Judge Gregory Carro canceled the state trial date indefinitely, set October 9 for the prosecution’s response to the defense double-jeopardy claim, and scheduled a December 10 hearing. AP also reported that Mangione pleaded not guilty in the state case. These are procedural updates reported on those dates; subsequent developments are not established here.
