What Natalie Tien Said About Sam Bankman-Fried After His Conviction

Natalie Tien said the verdict was right, even as she described a more human side of her former boss and reflected on her own perspective.

Former FTX executive Natalie Tien said she believed Sam Bankman-Fried’s conviction was the right outcome, while also describing him as someone she had seen in a more human light. In a post-verdict interview, she compared the experience of watching events unfold to “watching a kid do something that went really wrong.” That was her personal metaphor—not a court’s description or an explanation of his motives.

What did Natalie Tien say about Sam Bankman-Fried?

In a November 6, 2023 interview with Axios, Tien said she thought the guilty verdict was appropriate and that Bankman-Fried needed to take responsibility. She also said she felt sad and believed he was misunderstood.

“I feel like this is the right outcome, and I feel like he needs to be responsible for what happened.”

In the same interview, she described her personal reaction to seeing him during the events surrounding the case:

“I saw a more human side of Sam, and I just feel like it was watching a kid do something that went really wrong.”

The “kid” comparison was Tien’s metaphor for how the situation felt to her. It does not lessen the seriousness of the charges or verdict, and it should not be read as a finding about Bankman-Fried’s character, intent, or mental state.

Who is Natalie Tien?

Axios identified Tien as Bankman-Fried’s executive assistant and FTX’s head of public relations and marketing for roughly two and a half years. Her former role gave her personal experience with him, but her interview was a reflection on that experience—not testimony establishing what happened in the criminal case.

Tien also questioned whether having worked for him had affected her own view. She wondered aloud whether she had “brainwashed” herself. That was her expression of uncertainty about her perspective, not a clinical claim or evidence of coercion.

Did Tien think Bankman-Fried was guilty?

She said the verdict was the right outcome and that he should be responsible for what happened. Her sympathetic feelings and her view that accountability was warranted coexisted; one did not cancel out the other.

The legal outcome came from a jury, not from Tien’s personal assessment. On November 2, 2023, the jury convicted Bankman-Fried on seven counts. The U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement described counts including wire fraud conspiracy, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams characterized the case as a major fraud; that statement is the prosecutor’s characterization, distinct from the jury’s verdict itself.

How much did Tien say she lost in the FTX collapse?

Tien told Axios that she lost at least $500,000. That figure is her reported estimate; the interview does not establish that it was independently audited.

What the “little boy” comparison does—and does not—tell us

Tien’s words offer a glimpse of how one former colleague understood Bankman-Fried and processed the conviction. They do not establish why he acted, excuse the conduct behind the verdict, or replace the jury’s legal findings. The headline wording comes from coverage of her interview, while the comparison itself is attributed to Tien.
