Nandan Nilekani’s argument is that enterprise AI creates new work for IT services companies that can help businesses deploy it at scale. That is a business outlook, not a promise that AI will preserve every job. The official 2026 Infosys annual-meeting transcript attributes the meeting’s clearest statement about jobs being lost to shareholder Santhosh Chopra—not to Nilekani—and does not record Nilekani calling those fears “hogwash.”
What did Nilekani say about AI and jobs?
In a shareholder address dated May 22, 2026, Infosys co-founder and chairman Nandan Nilekani argued that AI changes the work software companies do and increases demand for some human capabilities. “The demand for human capability grows, not shrinks,” he said, while describing the engineering, security, data and organizational work needed to make AI useful in large businesses. The Economic Times published the address.

At the June 2026 annual general meeting, Nilekani was reported as saying, “AI will not replace companies like ours. It will amplify those who move with purpose and adapt with speed.” That statement concerns companies’ ability to adapt; it does not guarantee that individual workers or particular roles will be unaffected. India Today reported his remarks.
Who used the job-loss language at the AGM?
The distinction matters because the “hogwash” framing overstates what the available official transcript establishes. Shareholder Santhosh Chopra, not Nilekani, said at the 2026 AGM: “The world is saying that AI will wipe out IT companies, that coding will vanish, jobs will be lost, and clients will be alienated.” Chopra then offered his own view: “AI, too, is an opportunity, not a threat.” He proposed “People First, reskill at speed, AI for Bharat.” Those words are a shareholder’s suggestion, not an Infosys policy announcement. The official Infosys AGM transcript does not contain the word “hogwash” in this exchange.

Why does Infosys see AI as business for IT services?
Nilekani’s commercial argument is that building an AI demo is easier than integrating AI safely into the systems and routines a large company depends on. Businesses may need to modernize older software, connect AI tools to transaction systems and data, test outputs, protect information, establish governance, and redesign processes before pilots can become dependable operations.
In his May address, Nilekani described the challenge as a “deployment gap” and called for “root-and-branch surgery”: redesigning business processes, customer journeys and operating models rather than simply adding AI to existing structures. He also pointed to testing and validation, resilient architecture, cybersecurity, data governance, legacy modernization and integration as continuing needs. This explains why Infosys sees services work around AI adoption; it does not independently establish the company’s future revenue or hiring levels.

What AI services and activity has Infosys reported?
In a February 17, 2026 announcement, Infosys grouped its AI-first services into six areas. The company also said it was working on AI journeys with 90% of its top 200 clients and had more than 4,600 AI projects underway. These are company-reported figures, not independent measures of project success or employment impact. Infosys’s AI-first framework announcement describes the categories:
| Service area | What the category covers |
|---|---|
| AI strategy and engineering | Planning and building AI solutions. |
| Data for AI | Preparing and managing data used by AI systems. |
| Process AI | Applying AI to business processes. |
| Agentic legacy modernization | Using agentic AI in work to modernize existing systems. |
| Physical AI | AI applications involving physical environments or systems. |
| AI trust | Trust, governance and related safeguards for AI adoption. |
Infosys leadership also estimated a $300–400 billion potential AI-first services opportunity by 2030, as reported from the June AGM. Treat that as the company’s estimate of a potential market, not an independently validated forecast or a prediction of Infosys revenue. India Today’s AGM coverage reports the estimate.

Does AI mean IT jobs are safe?
No. The case that AI creates integration and transformation work for service providers does not settle what happens to workers. Automation can reduce the time or staffing needed for some coding and other tasks, while increasing demand for people who can validate systems, manage data and security, and adapt business processes. The cited statements do not quantify how many jobs Infosys will add, remove or change, nor do they establish that new work will offset displacement for every worker.
Nilekani’s May address cited a World Economic Forum projection of 92 million jobs displaced and 170 million created by 2030—a projected net gain of 78 million. These figures are a forecast cited in his speech, not observed outcomes; the speech page does not identify the WEF report edition, so its publication year and methodology should not be inferred from the address alone.

How to read the claims without confusing business growth with job security
- Separate the speaker: Nilekani’s comments present the chairman’s business outlook; Chopra’s remarks are those of a shareholder.
- Separate the outcome: More AI services work for a company does not prove that its workforce will grow or that every role will remain.
- Separate forecasts from current claims: The 2030 job figures and AI-services opportunity are projections or estimates; the client and project counts are figures Infosys reported about its activity.
- Keep the scope clear: Infosys’s opportunity is not the same question as AI’s net effect on employment across the economy.
