At Meta’s first LlamaCon, held in Menlo Park on April 29, 2025, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella estimated that “maybe 20%, 30%” of code in Microsoft repositories and some projects was “probably all written by software.” He said the share was rising, but did not describe a company-wide audit or explain how the estimate was calculated. The figure is not evidence that AI autonomously writes 30% of every Microsoft product.
What Nadella said at LlamaCon
Nadella made the estimate while answering a question from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about how much Microsoft code was AI-generated. The reported wording was “maybe 20%, 30%,” referring to code inside Microsoft repositories and some projects—not Microsoft’s entire software catalog. Nadella also said AI was making more progress in Python than in C++. TechCrunch’s report carries the estimate and language comparison; the Associated Press account places the conversation at Meta’s inaugural developer conference for its Llama ecosystem.
The safest reading is that Nadella described a rough, rising share of AI contribution in some Microsoft development work. He did not say that AI independently designed, validated, and maintained that share of Microsoft products.
Why “AI-written” is hard to measure
AI coding tools can suggest a single line, draft a function, generate tests, explain code, propose a refactor, or have an agent make changes across a repository. A developer may accept a suggestion unchanged, edit it substantially, test it, or discard it. Each scenario raises a different question about what counts as AI-written.

GitHub describes Copilot as assisting across inline suggestions, chat, code explanations, reviews, agents, and command-line workflows. That range illustrates why a percentage needs a definition before it can be compared or interpreted. GitHub’s Copilot overview describes those capabilities; it does not establish how Microsoft counted its internal code.
Questions a useful measurement would answer
- What is the denominator? New code, all code in active repositories, lines changed during a period, or selected teams and projects?
- What counts as AI contribution? Any accepted completion, a whole generated file, or code drafted by AI and then substantially rewritten?
- What unit is counted? Lines, files, commits, or projects? Boilerplate-heavy work can dominate line counts without representing the hardest engineering.
- Does the count include only code that lasts? Suggestions that are discarded are different from code merged, shipped, and retained.
- How is human work treated? AI-generated code can still require engineering judgment, review, testing, and integration.
The available coverage did not provide Microsoft’s denominator, time period, repository sample, attribution method, or rules for human-edited code. TechCrunch also reported that Microsoft and Google had not explained their counting methods. That leaves Nadella’s remark as an attributed estimate, not an independently auditable company-wide statistic.

Why the Python and C++ distinction matters
Nadella said AI was doing better in Python than C++. That is a qualification about relative performance, not a rule that AI is reliable in Python or incapable in C++. Results depend on the model, task, codebase, development tools, and review process.
Python’s concise syntax and broad body of examples can make many routine tasks easier to draft. C++ work may involve memory and lifetime management, templates, concurrency, performance constraints, compilation, and platform-specific behavior. Code that looks plausible can still be unsafe, inefficient, or incompatible with a large system in either language; those risks can be especially difficult to catch when correctness depends on low-level behavior.

How the claim compares with Google’s—and what it does not prove
Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly said in April 2025 that AI generated more than 30% of Google’s code. The figures suggest both companies were describing substantial AI use, but they are not a valid league table: neither company supplied enough public methodological detail to show that the same work, time period, or definition was being counted. TechCrunch’s coverage discusses both statements and the measurement problem.
Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott had previously forecast that 95% of code could be AI-generated by 2030. That is a prediction about a possible future, not a measurement of current usage or a result showing improved software quality. TechCrunch reported the forecast alongside Nadella’s estimate.

Does this mean Microsoft is replacing developers?
No conclusion about Microsoft’s staffing follows from the percentage alone. Automating repetitive code, tests, documentation, or routine transformations can change how developers spend their time; it does not establish that equivalent jobs have been removed. Developers may still need to define requirements, choose designs, assess generated output, test edge cases, secure systems, and maintain the resulting software.
Zuckerberg reportedly discussed AI taking on work associated with an intermediate-level engineer, but that broader prediction is not evidence that Microsoft eliminated those roles. Windows Central’s report covers that discussion. Nadella’s code-share estimate provides no headcount, hiring, or employment-outcome data.

What the number means for developers and buyers
Microsoft’s internal-use claim is relevant to the market for AI coding tools, including GitHub Copilot, but it does not prove that Copilot caused the reported percentage or that it is more effective than competing products. Microsoft owns GitHub and sells Copilot, so the claim is useful context about the company’s stated adoption, not independent validation of a product’s performance.
A high generated-code share is not itself a productivity or quality measure. It does not tell a buyer whether a team ships faster, spends less time on review, has fewer defects, or incurs more rework. Developers and organizations evaluating coding assistants can ask vendors how they count AI contribution, then track outcomes that matter to their own work:
- Measure accepted suggestions separately from code merged and retained in production.
- Track review time, cycle time, defect rates, security findings, and rework alongside generated-code volume.
- Set rules for source-code privacy, data use, model selection, and human review before rolling tools out broadly.
- Monitor usage and budget controls for agentic or other metered workflows rather than assuming a seat price captures all costs.
The central distinction is between code an AI helped produce and software that works well over time. Nadella’s estimate speaks to the first; by itself, it cannot answer the second.
