What Makes Bitcoin Prices Move? A Guide to Geopolitics, Oil, and Market Sentiment

Bitcoin prices reflect overlapping crypto-specific demand and broader risk conditions. Geopolitics and oil can affect the outlook indirectly, but neither reliably predicts Bitcoin’s next move.

Bitcoin prices move for several overlapping reasons: crypto-market demand and sentiment, broader investor risk appetite, monetary conditions, and shocks that spill across financial markets. Geopolitical events and oil prices can matter indirectly, but neither is a dependable standalone signal for Bitcoin’s next move. The effect depends on the event, the market environment, and the time horizon being considered.

Bitcoin’s price does not have one reliable driver

A Bitcoin price move can reflect crypto-specific trading, changing appetite for risk, or a shift in conditions across financial markets. Those forces can overlap, but a headline arriving at the same time as a price change does not prove that the headline caused it. Nor does a relationship observed over one period establish a rule that will hold in another.

It helps to separate four questions: what happened inside crypto markets; whether the event changed broad expectations about risk or financial conditions; how long after the event the price response is measured; and whether the evidence shows a direct response or only a connection between markets. An intraday reaction to a scheduled announcement is not the same thing as a relationship across a longer market cycle.

This distinction matters especially when interpreting explanations that sound simple: “Bitcoin fell because oil rose” or “Bitcoin climbed because investors sought a safe haven.” A market move may have several possible channels, and a broad macroeconomic mechanism does not by itself establish that Bitcoin responded through that channel. Crypto-specific forces and wider financial conditions can both matter, while the strength and timing of their relationship vary.

Monetary conditions and risk appetite can matter on different time scales

Why risk appetite is a useful lens

When investors become more willing to take risk, demand for assets perceived as risky may strengthen; when they become more cautious, that demand may weaken. This is a useful way to think about one possible route from financial conditions to Bitcoin, not a rule that Bitcoin always moves with stocks or that every risk-off episode produces a particular price change.

An International Monetary Fund working paper, The Crypto Cycle and US Monetary Policy (2023), identifies a shared component of crypto prices it calls the “crypto factor.” The paper estimates that this factor explains 80% of variation in crypto prices in its sample and method. That figure is about the paper’s identified common crypto component; it does not mean that one factor explains 80% of every Bitcoin move. The authors also report that US Federal Reserve tightening reduces the factor through a risk-taking channel, and that its correlation with equity markets increased alongside institutional participation in crypto.

The factor is useful as a way to describe variation that crypto assets share, rather than as a complete explanation of any single coin’s price. It also offers a mechanism for thinking about monetary policy: tighter policy can affect risk taking, and the study reports that this channel reduced the common crypto factor. The finding is not a promise that every rate increase will be followed by a Bitcoin decline. The paper’s estimate is tied to its data and method, and its result concerns a common crypto-market component.

The reported increase in correlation with equities alongside institutional participation likewise describes a relationship identified by that study. It does not mean institutional investors are the only reason crypto and equities can move together, nor that their correlation is constant. It does, however, help explain why broader financial-market conditions can become relevant to crypto prices in some periods.

Why an immediate news response can look different

A New York Fed staff report by Gianluca Benigno and Carlo Rosa, published in February 2023, studied intraday price movements around monetary and macroeconomic news. Its result was that Bitcoin was orthogonal to that news in the event-study design, unlike other US asset classes. The authors described this finding as puzzling if Bitcoin is viewed as purely speculative, since discount-rate surprises would be expected to matter in principle.

“The key result is that, unlike other U.S. asset classes, Bitcoin is orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news.”

This is the New York Fed staff report’s exact summary of the event-study result, not a claim that Bitcoin never responds to macroeconomic conditions. “Orthogonal” here describes the result in that study’s intraday event-study design: the researchers did not find the same response to monetary and macroeconomic news as for other US asset classes in the measured window.

That finding and the IMF paper address different mechanisms and horizons. A muted or inconsistent reaction in a narrow announcement window can coexist with a broader relationship between monetary conditions, risk taking, and crypto prices over longer periods. Neither result establishes that a particular rate decision will move Bitcoin in a predictable direction.

In other words, the studies should not be treated as mutually exclusive verdicts. One examines short event windows around news; the other identifies a common crypto factor and examines its relationship with monetary policy and risk taking. The distinction is between an immediate response to a specific announcement and broader connections that may develop across a longer period.

How geopolitics can reach Bitcoin indirectly

The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report describes two broad routes from geopolitical events to asset prices. One is a market-sentiment route: uncertainty can affect investor confidence and risk aversion. The other is an economic route: trade or financial restrictions, supply-chain disruption, inflation, commodity prices, and capital flows can change the outlook for markets.

Applied to Bitcoin, these are transmission channels rather than a direct estimate of how a specific geopolitical event changes Bitcoin’s price. If a shock makes investors more cautious or affects financial conditions, Bitcoin could be affected through broader risk sentiment and connections with other markets. But the report’s general account of geopolitical risk does not establish a dependable Bitcoin-specific response to any one conflict, sanction, or political announcement.

The distinction between the two channels can help make a headline easier to assess. The sentiment route asks whether the event changes confidence or risk aversion. The economic route asks whether it changes trade, financial restrictions, supply chains, inflation, commodity prices, or capital flows. In a real episode, both may be in play, but their significance and timing can differ. Neither automatically translates into a particular Bitcoin move.

The same IMF report described Bitcoin, during its reporting period, as sensitive to pressures in other asset prices and discussed stock-market shocks spilling over to Bitcoin. That is a time-bound observation from an April 2025 report, not a current market statistic or a guarantee that Bitcoin will respond the same way in a future episode.

It is therefore more accurate to say geopolitical events can shape the conditions in which Bitcoin trades than to say geopolitics mechanically sets its price. The route from an event to Bitcoin may run through uncertainty or economic conditions, then through risk taking or financial-market spillovers. The cited geopolitical report describes broad asset-price channels; the Bitcoin-specific bridge is an inference supported by separate research on crypto risk taking and spillovers.

Does oil affect Bitcoin?

Oil can be part of a chain of events that affects Bitcoin, but the cited sources do not establish a reliable independent oil-to-Bitcoin price effect. A supply disruption, for example, could raise energy costs and inflation concerns. Those concerns may alter expectations about monetary policy and investor risk appetite, which could in turn affect assets such as Bitcoin. The links from geopolitical disruption through commodities, inflation, and policy expectations are broad macro-financial mechanisms; applying the final step specifically to Bitcoin is an inference, not a measured causal estimate in the cited material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Oil prices can also move for reasons unrelated to a geopolitical supply shock, and the same oil move can occur in a market environment with very different investor expectations. So “oil is rising” alone does not tell you whether Bitcoin should rise or fall. The relevant questions are what is driving the oil move, whether it changes expectations about inflation or financial conditions, and whether crypto markets are responding to those wider pressures.

For example, if a geopolitical disruption threatens energy supply, the potential first-order issue is the commodity and supply-chain shock. A later concern could be whether higher energy costs affect inflation expectations or policy choices. Only after identifying those links does it make sense to ask whether changed risk appetite or financial-market spillovers could reach Bitcoin. This is a way to organize the possible transmission, not a forecast that the sequence will occur or that Bitcoin will move in a particular direction.

The IMF report names oil among the physical assets exposed to geopolitical channels, but that does not isolate an oil effect on Bitcoin. The studies cited here did not identify a direct Bitcoin-specific causal estimate for oil prices. Keep that evidence gap in view: a plausible macro chain is not the same as proof that a particular oil-price change caused a Bitcoin price change.

Why Bitcoin can move with other markets during turbulence

An IMF working paper on spillovers, published in September 2023, reports that return and volatility spillovers between crypto and financial assets grow during heightened turbulence. The episodes examined included turbulence associated with negative economic-financial news, crypto-market events, and exogenous shocks. In practical terms, Bitcoin may appear more connected to wider markets during some stressed periods than it does in calmer conditions.

A spillover or correlation is evidence of a relationship, not proof of a fixed link or a forecast. It does not show that equities always lead Bitcoin, that every market decline will be matched by a Bitcoin decline, or that a same-day co-movement has one obvious cause. Crypto-specific developments can occur alongside broader market forces, making it difficult to attribute a move to just one headline.

The IMF’s April 2025 report also discusses stock-market shocks spilling over to Bitcoin in its reporting period. Read alongside the September 2023 study, this supports the possibility that connections can strengthen in turbulent conditions, not the claim that Bitcoin permanently tracks equities. The studies examine historical data and their conclusions depend on sample periods and methods; market relationships can change.

“Return” and “volatility” spillovers describe different dimensions of connection. The study reports stronger spillovers in both during heightened turbulence. That finding helps explain why a stressful period can involve closer cross-market links, but it does not identify one universal direction or say that every shock originates outside crypto. The reported turbulence includes crypto-market events as well as negative economic-financial news and exogenous shocks.

Flows and sentiment indicators add context, not certainty

An IMF paper, A Primer on Bitcoin Cross-Border Flows, discusses global drivers such as the VIX and the broad dollar index as proxies for risk aversion and global financial conditions, alongside Bitcoin-specific sentiment measures. It also finds that Bitcoin cross-border flows respond differently from traditional capital flows and that on-chain and off-chain flows differ. These distinctions matter because activity visible on a blockchain is not a complete account of every way investors can move exposure to Bitcoin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction between on-chain and off-chain flows cautions against reading one source of activity as a full picture of Bitcoin-related movement. The paper’s finding that Bitcoin cross-border flows respond differently from traditional capital flows also means conventional flow assumptions may not map neatly onto Bitcoin. These are useful context for understanding the market; they do not turn a flow measure into a short-term price signal.

The paper describes a crypto fear-and-greed index that combines volatility, momentum, social-media interest, Bitcoin dominance, and Google Trends. Such an index is an operational measure built from selected inputs, not a direct reading of what every Bitcoin investor believes. It can help describe market mood, but it cannot establish why a price moved or reliably predict what comes next.

Each input captures a particular proxy or market feature. Volatility and momentum reflect market behavior; social-media interest and Google Trends reflect selected measures of attention; Bitcoin dominance is another crypto-market measure. Combining them can produce a compact sentiment indicator, but the result depends on the inputs chosen. It is best treated as a way to describe one aspect of market conditions, not an objective measure of every investor’s intentions.

Similarly, the VIX and broad dollar index are proxies for risk aversion and global financial conditions in the flows paper, not direct measurements of Bitcoin demand. Considering them alongside crypto-specific indicators can help distinguish a broad market shift from a crypto-only development, but the cited research does not establish that any one of these indicators reliably forecasts Bitcoin’s next move.

A practical way to interpret a Bitcoin price move

  1. Identify the event. Separate a crypto-specific development from a macroeconomic announcement, geopolitical shock, oil-market change, or broad shift in investor sentiment. A crypto-market event may itself be part of a turbulent period, so do not assume that every move began outside crypto.
  2. Trace the proposed channel. Ask whether the event could affect Bitcoin directly through crypto demand, or indirectly through uncertainty, inflation expectations, policy expectations, risk taking, or spillovers from other markets. For oil or geopolitics, be explicit about which links are observed and which are inferred.
  3. Set the time horizon. An intraday move around a scheduled data release and a longer-term relationship with financial conditions are different observations. Do not use one as proof of the other. The New York Fed result concerns an intraday event-study window; the IMF factor and spillover findings address different relationships.
  4. Distinguish measurement from explanation. A study may measure an event-window response, a correlation, or a spillover. A plausible economic pathway is useful for interpretation but is not the same as a Bitcoin-specific causal estimate. The geopolitical and oil channels described here are broad macro-financial mechanisms; the application to Bitcoin is an inference.
  5. Look for competing explanations. A price move can coincide with several developments. Consider whether crypto-specific news or changing market conditions offer another explanation before assigning the move to one headline. A same-day relationship alone cannot identify which event mattered most.
  6. Check the scope of the evidence. Ask whether a result concerns Bitcoin specifically, crypto markets as a group, or assets more broadly. The 80% statistic refers to the IMF paper’s crypto factor and its sample and method, not to every Bitcoin move. General geopolitical channels likewise are not a direct Bitcoin estimate.
  7. Avoid turning a relationship into a forecast. Historical findings depend on their sample period and method. None of the cited studies establishes a dependable rule for predicting Bitcoin from oil, geopolitics, interest-rate decisions, or market sentiment.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you

Question What the cited work finds What it does not establish
Does macroeconomic news move Bitcoin? The New York Fed’s February 2023 intraday event study found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in its design. That Bitcoin is insulated from broader financial conditions over every time horizon.
Can monetary policy and risk taking matter? The IMF’s 2023 crypto-factor paper reports an effect of US Federal Reserve tightening on its crypto factor through risk taking; the factor explained 80% of crypto-price variation in that study’s sample and method. That one factor explains 80% of every Bitcoin move or that each policy decision produces a predictable response.
Can markets become more connected under stress? The IMF’s September 2023 spillover paper reports stronger return and volatility spillovers during heightened turbulence. A permanent or one-directional relationship between Bitcoin and traditional financial markets.
Do geopolitical events or oil prices have a direct Bitcoin effect? The IMF’s April 2025 report sets out broad geopolitical channels through sentiment and economic conditions; those channels make indirect effects plausible. A direct causal estimate isolating the effect of oil prices or geopolitical risk on Bitcoin.
Do flows and sentiment measures predict price? The IMF’s Bitcoin flows paper distinguishes cross-border from traditional capital flows, and on-chain from off-chain flows; it describes global and crypto-specific sentiment measures. A simple flow or sentiment indicator that reliably forecasts short-term Bitcoin prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does oil affect Bitcoin prices?

Oil may affect Bitcoin indirectly if a supply shock changes inflation expectations, monetary-policy expectations, or risk appetite. The cited sources do not establish a reliable independent oil-to-Bitcoin effect, so an oil move alone is not a dependable signal of Bitcoin’s direction.

Does geopolitics move Bitcoin?

Geopolitical events can affect asset prices through uncertainty and investor risk aversion, as well as through trade, supply chains, inflation, commodity prices, and capital flows. Applying those broad channels to Bitcoin is an inference; the cited research does not provide a dependable Bitcoin-specific response to any one conflict or announcement.

Why can Bitcoin fall when markets are nervous?

One possible mechanism is reduced appetite for risk. IMF research reports that crypto and financial-market return and volatility spillovers grow during heightened turbulence, and another IMF study links Federal Reserve tightening to a crypto factor through a risk-taking channel. These findings describe relationships in particular studies, not a rule that Bitcoin always falls when stocks do.

Does Bitcoin respond to Federal Reserve announcements?

The answer depends partly on the time horizon and evidence being considered. A New York Fed February 2023 intraday event study found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in its design. An IMF working paper reports a broader relationship between US Federal Reserve tightening and its crypto factor through risk taking. Neither result makes the direction of a particular announcement predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Bitcoin always move with the stock market?

No. IMF research reports increased crypto-equity correlation alongside institutional participation and stronger cross-market spillovers during turbulence, but these are historical findings rather than evidence of a fixed relationship. Correlation or spillovers do not establish that equities always lead Bitcoin or that every stock-market move will be matched.

Can a fear-and-greed index predict Bitcoin’s next move?

The index described by the IMF combines selected inputs such as volatility, momentum, social-media interest, Bitcoin dominance, and Google Trends. It can summarize aspects of market mood, but it is not a direct reading of every investor’s beliefs and does not reliably predict what comes next.

The Bottom Line

Bitcoin prices reflect overlapping crypto-specific demand and broader financial conditions. Risk appetite, monetary policy, geopolitics, oil, and cross-market stress can all be relevant through different channels and time horizons, but the evidence does not support treating any one of them as a dependable standalone predictor. Separate measured findings from plausible explanations, and treat co-movement as context—not proof of cause or a forecast.
