Jeffrey Epstein invested in cryptocurrency companies and helped fund an MIT initiative involved in Bitcoin development, but the available reporting does not show that he controlled Bitcoin or funded the far-right figures who adopted it. Those are separate histories: one concerns Epstein’s financial and institutional connections to the crypto industry; the other concerns documented cryptocurrency use by white supremacist figures.
What Epstein’s Bitcoin connections amount to
The reporting describes investments and donations linked to Epstein, not ownership of Bitcoin or authority over its protocol. The distinctions matter: an investment can be financially significant without granting control, and support for an institutional initiative is not the same as directing developers.
| Connection | What reporting says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | The Washington Post reported that Epstein invested $3 million in Coinbase in 2014, within a $75 million funding round. His stake was less than 1% and carried no governance role. The Post reported that he sold half of it in February 2018 for $15 million. The Guardian also reported the initial investment and said filings suggest the shares were sold to Blockchain Capital. The Washington Post; The Guardian | A large dollar investment does not mean Epstein controlled Coinbase or Bitcoin. |
| MIT Digital Currency Initiative | The Guardian reported that 2015 communications between Epstein and Joichi Ito, then director of MIT’s Media Lab, described Epstein “gift funds” as helping “underwrite” the launch of the initiative. The email thread called the Lab the “principal home and funding source” for Bitcoin. The Guardian | The reporting supports an institutional funding connection to an initiative involved in open-source crypto work, not Epstein’s control of Bitcoin or direction of Bitcoin Core developers. |
| Blockstream | The Guardian reported a $500,000 early-stage investment routed through an investment fund co-owned by Epstein and Ito. The Block reported Adam Back’s account that Epstein was a limited partner in Ito’s fund, which held a minority stake and later divested. Back said Blockstream had “no direct nor indirect financial connection with Jeffrey Epstein, or his estate.” The Guardian; The Block | The reported route was through a fund; it is not evidence of a continuing direct company relationship. |
What Epstein wrote about Bitcoin
In a July 2014 email to Peter Thiel reproduced by The Block, Epstein wrote: “It appears that there is little agreement on what Bitcoin is,” then listed possible descriptions: “Store of or intrinsic value, ( if any ) currency, property, architecture, payment system. etc., conflicting goals. Anonymous, but transparent ( public ledger ) … Anyway, more when I see you.” The Block
The email shows Epstein discussing Bitcoin’s competing functions. It does not establish that he endorsed every use he listed, or prove the extent of his knowledge, motives or political views. The Block also reported that he proposed two digital currencies to Saudi officials in 2016, including one described as Sharia-compliant and modeled on Bitcoin technology. That is a reported proposal, not evidence that either currency launched or was adopted.

Far-right figures’ cryptocurrency use is a separate record
The Southern Poverty Law Center’s 2022 report names white supremacist figures it says adopted or used Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies: Greg Johnson of Counter-Currents, Stefan Molyneux, Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer, Andrew Anglin of the Daily Stormer, Don Black of Stormfront, Jared Taylor of American Renaissance and Peter Brimelow of VDARE. The report discusses cryptocurrency as a way for such movements to extend their reach and obscure funding sources. Southern Poverty Law Center
That evidence documents extremist adoption; it does not connect those people or organizations financially to Epstein. The available reporting does not establish that he funded them, shared their organizations or coordinated a political project with them. Nor does a person’s appearance in correspondence or other records, by itself, prove wrongdoing or shared political commitments.

How to read the claims without conflating them
- Personal investment versus institutional support: Coinbase and Blockstream were investment connections, while the MIT account concerns gift funds supporting an initiative. Neither type of connection establishes control over Bitcoin.
- Fund exposure versus direct company ties: The Blockstream investment was reported through Ito’s fund; Back said the fund later divested and denied a direct or indirect financial connection between Blockstream and Epstein or his estate.
- Extremist use versus a link to Epstein: The SPLC’s account of far-right cryptocurrency adoption does not supply evidence of a financial or organizational connection to Epstein.
- Contemporaneous email versus later interpretation: Epstein’s email records what he wrote about Bitcoin’s possible meanings; it cannot, by itself, settle his full motives or expertise.
Peter Thiel’s separate 2015 Blockchain Capital investor presentation called Bitcoin “the first encrypted money that has the potential to do something like change the world.” That statement is Thiel’s investor-presentation remark, not a statement made to Epstein.
