On Twitter’s July 22, 2021, second-quarter earnings call, then-CEO Jack Dorsey described bitcoin as a possible internet-native currency that could help Twitter expand products such as Super Follows, Commerce, Subscriptions and Tip Jar across markets. His remarks set out a strategic vision—not confirmation that bitcoin payments had launched in those products.
What Dorsey said on the earnings call
Dorsey argued that a shared digital currency could make it easier for Twitter to serve people internationally. TechCrunch quoted him saying: “If the internet has a native currency, a global currency, we are able to able to move so much faster with products such as Super Follows, Commerce, Subscriptions, Tip Jar, and we can reach every single person on the planet because of that instead of going down a market-by-market-by-market approach.”
The repeated words “able to able to” appear in TechCrunch’s transcription and are retained here. The quotation is attributed to Dorsey through the outlet’s report of the call, rather than an independently reviewed official transcript. The Block also reported that Dorsey described bitcoin as the “best candidate” to become the internet’s “native currency.”
Which Twitter products did he mention?
Dorsey named four product areas as examples of where a global currency might help Twitter move faster. The call report presents them as possible opportunities, not as confirmed bitcoin payment integrations.

Why he linked bitcoin with Twitter’s future
Dorsey’s reasoning went beyond payment convenience. He said: “I think this is a big part of our future. I think there is a lot of innovation above just currency to be had, especially as we think about decentralizing social media more and providing more economic incentive.” In his view, a common currency could support products that work across borders while also contributing to new economic models and decentralization.
That was an ambition, not evidence that bitcoin had already made Twitter’s services global or decentralized. The “every single person on the planet” phrasing was part of his argument about potential reach, not a measured result or a guarantee.

What the 2021 remarks do—and do not—show
TechCrunch reported that a Twitter representative characterized the earnings call as the first time Dorsey had publicly explained how bitcoin could fit into Twitter’s product lineup. That “first time” description is the representative’s characterization as relayed by TechCrunch, not an independently verified absolute.
The contemporaneous reporting documents a strategic outlook and the product areas Dorsey had in mind. It does not show that bitcoin payments launched across Super Follows, Commerce, Subscriptions or Tip Jar, nor does it establish their later status. The statements should therefore be read as a 2021 vision expressed while Dorsey was Twitter’s CEO—not as a current description of X features.
