World Chain is a separate Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain built with the OP Stack and positioned by World as part of the Optimism Superchain. It is designed to support applications in World’s ecosystem, with a priority lane intended to give transactions from World ID-verified people preference when blocks are congested. The network is open to people who do not use World ID; World ID, World App, and WLD are related parts of the ecosystem, not other names for the chain.
What World Chain is—and how it relates to Ethereum
World Chain is a blockchain network that processes transactions in its own execution environment while operating as an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2). It uses the OP Stack, the software framework associated with Optimism, and World describes it as part of the Optimism Superchain. In practical terms, it is not Ethereum mainnet: it is a distinct network built to work within Ethereum’s broader L2 ecosystem. World’s developer page describes the network as live, permissionless, and open source; those are the project’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of how it operates.

World presents the chain as open infrastructure for applications in its ecosystem. Its distinctive design goal is to make blockspace more accessible to verified humans, rather than requiring users to prove they are human simply to use the network. World’s October 17, 2024 mainnet announcement introduced Priority Blockspace for Humans (PBH) as an initial integration.
How World ID and Priority Blockspace for Humans work together
World ID is World’s proof-of-human identity system. PBH uses World ID verification as an input to transaction prioritization: according to World, transactions from verified humans can receive priority during block building, ahead of other transactions when blockspace is congested. World reported PBH live on World Chain mainnet on June 26, 2025, and described a portion at the top of each block as reserved for transactions sent from verified humans. That is World’s account of the feature, not independent evidence of its performance.

The distinction matters: a priority lane is not a promise that every verified transaction will be faster, nor does it establish that the network is bot-proof or immune to exploitation. It describes an intended ordering advantage under congestion. World says the chain is open to everyone, so World ID is not a general access requirement for sending transactions or using applications.
World Chain, World ID, World App, and WLD are different things
- World Chain: the Ethereum L2 network and execution environment.
- World ID: the proof-of-human identity system used as an input to the chain’s human-priority design.
- World App: a wallet and application access point in the wider World system, not the blockchain itself.
- WLD: World’s token, which is distinct from the network. The World whitepaper identifies WLD as an ERC-20 token deployed on Ethereum mainnet and says it is bridged for use on World Chain. It describes World Chain as the main venue for access and use as of October 17, 2024. Read the World whitepaper.
WLD availability and eligibility are subject to geography and other restrictions, so its presence in the ecosystem does not mean every person can obtain or use it. A token’s value or availability also does not establish the technical performance or safety of the chain itself.

What is known about World Chain’s status
- October 17, 2024: World announced World Chain mainnet and introduced PBH as a planned initial integration. World’s announcement.
- June 26, 2025: World said PBH was live on World Chain mainnet. Its announcement headline cited 13 million verified humans, and the post reported more than 5 million monthly active wallets. Those are dated figures reported by World, not independently audited or current counts. World’s PBH update.

What these descriptions do—and do not—tell you
The project materials explain World Chain’s architecture and intended human-priority feature, but they do not by themselves establish security, decentralization in practice, censorship resistance, measured throughput, or comparative fees. Those questions require independent technical evidence and current, like-for-like measurements. Developers looking to build on the network can consult World’s World Chain documentation.
