Vanilla Prepaid cards in Canada are prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift cards: you pay for a set amount, the retailer activates the card at checkout, and purchases draw down its available balance. They are not credit cards, and their fees, acceptance, expiry and balance rules depend on the specific card. Check the agreement and instructions that came with yours.
How a Vanilla Prepaid card works
You pay for the card at a retailer, which activates it at checkout. The Vanilla Visa and Mastercard agreements say the card has no value until it is activated by the cashier; they also instruct the cardholder to sign the card where indicated. Keep the receipt and card materials in case you need to check the purchase or contact support. The available balance is prepaid money, not a credit line, and each approved purchase reduces it.

Vanilla offers card variants on Visa and Mastercard networks. Do not assume that the instructions or terms for one variant apply to another; use the website, phone number and cardholder agreement provided with your card.
Where you can use it
Visa Canada says its gift cards, including Vanilla Prepaid Gift Cards, are non-reloadable and can be used in Canada at merchants that accept Visa. Its general guidance says Visa gift cards are not accepted outside Canada. Merchant policies and the agreement for your particular Vanilla card still apply. For a Mastercard card, check the terms and acceptance details supplied with that card rather than assuming Visa-specific guidance covers it.

For online purchases or transactions that request a billing address, follow the instructions for your particular card. There is no single online-use procedure established here for every Vanilla card variant.
Fees, expiry and remaining balance
The Vanilla Visa and Mastercard agreements available here describe a one-time activation fee, with the amount set out in the fee disclosure applicable to the card. Do not rely on a universal fee figure: check the card packaging or its current agreement. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) notes that prepaid products can have other fees, such as purchase, balance inquiry, replacement, foreign transaction or inactivity-related fees; that does not mean every Vanilla card charges each one.

Exact current fee amounts, expiry rules and treatment of remaining value after expiry are not established across all current Vanilla products. Read the terms for your specific card. The 2022 Vanilla agreements describe ways to check balance and transaction history online or by phone, but use the web address and number attached to your card because they can vary by product. See the Vanilla Visa agreement or Vanilla Mastercard and virtual-account agreement as applicable, and check whether newer terms have replaced the 2022 documents.
Why a card may be declined
A positive balance does not guarantee that a transaction will go through. The FCAC identifies several common causes:

- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
- The merchant does not accept prepaid cards or the card network.
- The purchase costs more than the available balance.
- A temporary authorization hold has reserved some of the balance.
Hotels, car-rental agencies, restaurants, service businesses and pay-at-pump fuel terminals may place temporary holds. Until a hold is released, the reserved amount may not be available for another purchase. Check your balance before paying and ask the merchant whether it can split the payment if the card balance is less than the bill.
What to do if the card is lost or stolen
Contact the card issuer promptly using the support details printed on the card or in its agreement. The FCAC says registration is generally needed to obtain protection from unauthorized transactions when a prepaid card is lost or stolen. Reporting, replacement and recovery depend on the specific card terms, so do not assume that funds can be recovered or that a replacement will be issued.

What to compare before choosing a prepaid card
When choosing between Vanilla Visa, Vanilla Mastercard or another prepaid gift card, compare the features that affect how you plan to use it:
- Network and acceptance: Check which network it uses and whether the merchants or transaction types you have in mind accept it.
- Net value: Compare the card’s face value with any activation or purchase fee disclosed for that product.
- Flexibility: Check whether it is reloadable, how online purchases work, whether split payment is possible and whether you need use outside Canada.
- Expiry and unused funds: Read the product terms for card expiry and how any remaining balance is handled.
- Support and security: Check registration requirements, loss-reporting steps and replacement terms.
These are points to verify, not features shared by every Vanilla product. For general guidance on prepaid-card fees, holds and consumer considerations, see the FCAC prepaid-card guide. For information on rights and disclosures, consult the FCAC guide to prepaid-product rights and the Prepaid Payment Products Regulations. Quebec residents can also consult the Quebec consumer office’s prepaid-card fee guidance.
