UPI, or the Unified Payments Interface, is India’s instant payment system for sending money between bank accounts and paying merchants. You use it through a compatible payment app: choose a recipient or scan a merchant’s QR code, check the details, and authorize the payment with your UPI PIN. UPI is the payment system; BHIM, PhonePe and Google Pay are examples of apps that provide an interface to it.

What is UPI?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI-regulated entity. It is built over IMPS infrastructure and connects bank accounts through compatible apps. In practical terms, it lets a user instruct a bank-account payment from a phone without having to enter the recipient’s bank details for every transaction.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

UPI supports person-to-person (P2P) transfers and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. Depending on the app, bank and feature, the system can also support collection requests, scheduled mandates, account transfers and QR-based merchant payments. The core experience most people encounter is sending money to another person or scanning a merchant’s QR code to pay.

UPI itself is not a bank account, wallet balance or single payment app. The money moves between bank accounts; a UPI-enabled app gives the user a way to initiate and authorize the transaction. Available functions, supported banks, screens, limits and fees can vary by app and bank.

One way to understand the roles is to separate the payment network from the tool on your phone. NPCI develops and operates the UPI system; a participating bank provides the account involved in the transaction; and an app provides the interface through which you select a payment, review it and authorize it. These roles can be connected behind the scenes, but you still need to know which account you selected and what the app is asking you to approve.

UPI is designed for real-time payments, but the app’s status message is important. An instant system does not mean every exception, pending status or dispute is resolved instantly. The handling of a declined, pending or otherwise problematic transaction can depend on the bank and the particular case.

How does a UPI payment work?

A standard payment combines recipient details, the amount and the payer’s authorization. The precise screens differ among apps, but the key checks are the same: identify the intended recipient, confirm the amount, and enter the PIN only when you mean to authorize a payment.

  1. Set up a compatible app and link an account. Register in a UPI-enabled app and link a supported bank account. NPCI says multiple bank accounts can be linked within one mobile application, where supported.
  2. Select the recipient or merchant. Depending on the payment flow, you may use a UPI ID, UPI Number, account number and IFSC, or scan a merchant QR code. The app and participating bank determine which options are available.
  3. Enter the amount and inspect the payee details. Check that the displayed recipient or merchant is the one you intended to pay and that the amount is correct. Do this before proceeding: NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped.
  4. Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the PIN in the app’s payment authorization step. This authorizes a bank transaction; it is not a code to share with a recipient or support representative.
  5. Check the result in the app. The app displays the transaction status. If a transaction is declined, NPCI describes a real-time reversal, with the amount transferred back to the payer account immediately. A pending transaction or an amount that has not returned may need to be checked through the app or bank’s transaction-status and support process; handling can depend on the bank and the specific transaction.

Not every transfer uses the same alias, confirmation screen, limit, charge or settlement presentation. Treat the details shown in your own app and the current instructions from your bank as authoritative for that transaction.

What to check at each stage

During setup, confirm that you are using a UPI-enabled app and that the bank account you intend to use is available to link. If you link more than one account, take a moment to notice which one the app has selected for the payment. NPCI’s product booklet describes linking multiple bank accounts in one mobile application, but the exact selection controls and available accounts can differ between apps and banks.

When choosing a recipient, use the payment detail you have been given and check the payee information the app displays. A QR code is another way to select a merchant, but scanning it does not remove the need to review the resulting payee and amount. A payment made with an account number and IFSC, a UPI ID, a UPI Number or a merchant QR can lead through different screens; do not assume every app offers every route.

Before entering your PIN, pause on the final confirmation step. Verify both the amount and the name or other recipient information shown in the app. NPCI’s FAQ is explicit that a payment cannot be stopped once initiated. If you spot an error before authorization, do not proceed; return to the preceding step and correct the details. If the payment has already been initiated, check its status and use the app or bank’s support process rather than assuming it can be cancelled.

After authorization, save or note the app’s displayed status and transaction details if you need to follow up. A decline and a pending status are not the same. NPCI describes real-time reversal for a declined transaction, but does not establish that every pending or disputed transaction will be resolved on the same schedule. Follow the status and support instructions attached to the specific transaction.

What is a UPI-PIN?

A UPI PIN is the four- to six-digit code used to authorize a UPI bank transaction. NPCI describes it as a PIN set at first registration. It is different from a bank-issued MPIN, even if both are numeric codes. Do not disclose a UPI PIN to anyone, including someone claiming to be from a bank, app or support team.

A payment request and a payment authorization are not the same thing. Read the action the app is asking you to approve, along with the payee and amount, before entering the PIN. Entering it to authorize a payment is not a way to receive money.

Think of the PIN as the final authorization for a bank transaction, not a general verification code to be passed to another person. If someone tells you to enter the PIN to collect a payment, arrange a refund or prove that you own an account, stop and inspect the action shown in the app. The important question is whether the screen is asking you to pay the displayed recipient. Do not share the PIN verbally, in a message or with someone who says they need it to troubleshoot a transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PIN is separate from the app’s other access or account-recovery controls. The details of setting, changing or resetting one are not identical across every app and bank, so use the instructions in the app or from your bank. Do not try to solve a failed authorization by giving the PIN to another person.

What happens if I enter the wrong UPI-PIN during a transaction?

The transaction cannot be authorized with an incorrect PIN. The exact retry, temporary-blocking or reset rules are not established as universal across apps and banks, so follow the message shown in your app and your bank’s instructions rather than guessing how many attempts are allowed. Never give the PIN to another person to troubleshoot a failed payment.

If the app reports that authorization failed, read the message before trying again. Check that you are using the PIN you set for UPI rather than confusing it with a bank-issued MPIN or another code. If the app directs you to reset or seek help, use its official process or your bank’s support route. Retry rules and recovery procedures can vary, so avoid relying on a number of attempts or a waiting period described for a different bank or app.

UPI, BHIM and other payment apps: what is the difference?

UPI is the underlying payment system. BHIM is an NPCI UPI app, while apps such as PhonePe and Google Pay are other interfaces that connect users to UPI. Choosing an app is therefore not the same as choosing a different underlying payment network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Term What it refers to What to consider
UPI The payment system that connects participating bank accounts for supported transfers and payments. Bank participation and the features available to an account matter.
BHIM An NPCI UPI app. Check its current features, participating banks and support options.
Other UPI apps Apps that provide an interface to UPI, including PhonePe and Google Pay. Compare the functions, bank compatibility, accessibility and customer support you need; there is no established current winner across those criteria.

App transaction volume is not a measure of service quality. NPCI’s August 2025 app figures attribute transactions using payer-side payment service provider (PSP) logic and exclude certain transaction types from third-party app market-share reporting. Those numbers describe reported volume, not reliability, support quality or which app is best for an individual.

When comparing apps, focus on practical needs rather than assuming that one app is best for everyone. Check whether it supports the bank account and payment options you use, whether its interface is accessible to you, and how to reach its support channel for a transaction problem. Look at the current feature list and terms in the app and with your bank. NPCI’s reported app volumes can show how much activity was attributed to an app under its methodology, but they do not establish a ranking for customer service, ease of use or payment reliability.

Likewise, a UPI app is not necessarily the provider of the bank account being debited. Before authorizing a transfer, check which linked bank account is selected. If an app supports multiple accounts, that can be useful when choosing among accounts, but it also makes the selected account a detail worth verifying on the payment screen.

How widely is UPI used?

NPCI’s statistics show the system operating at a scale of billions of transactions per month. The figures below are from different reporting tables and dates, so the August 2025 category breakdown should not be combined with the August 2026 total as if they were measured in the same month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
NPCI reporting period Measure Reported figure
August 2026 Total UPI transaction volume and value shown on NPCI’s monthly statistics page 24,508.96 million transactions; ₹29,82,355.95 crore
August 2025 Total ecosystem transaction volume 20,008.31 million transactions
August 2025 P2P transactions 7,303.15 million
August 2025 P2M transactions 12,705.16 million
August 2025 PhonePe app transaction volume under NPCI’s payer-side PSP attribution 9,152.54 million
August 2025 Google Pay app transaction volume under NPCI’s payer-side PSP attribution 7,063.76 million

NPCI notes that same-account debit/credit transactions have been excluded from the monthly statistics since August 2018. The August 2026 figures are the latest monthly total volume and value shown in the cited NPCI statistics snapshot; transaction volumes and system features can change over time.

The August 2025 category figures illustrate both common uses: 7,303.15 million P2P payments and 12,705.16 million P2M payments, out of 20,008.31 million total ecosystem transactions in that reporting table. They are useful context for the system’s breadth, not a prediction of how often an individual will use UPI or a guarantee that every merchant accepts it.

The periods matter. The August 2026 total is a monthly volume-and-value figure; the P2P and P2M split and the app-attributed volumes listed here are from August 2025. Keep those reporting dates attached to the numbers rather than comparing them as if all rows came from a single month. NPCI’s note about excluding same-account debit/credit transactions also matters when interpreting the total: a published transaction count reflects the reporting definition used, not every conceivable account movement.

Can you use UPI internationally?

UPI is not universally accepted overseas, but NPCI describes QR-based payments at select overseas merchant locations. To use that option, a person needs an eligible UPI-powered app and must activate the international service for the relevant bank account. Acceptance and account eligibility are not universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before authorizing an overseas QR payment, inspect the amount displayed in both foreign and Indian currency and check the applicable conversion rate or fees. The amount, conversion and charges can depend on the app, bank and transaction; do not assume that a domestic payment’s terms apply abroad.

International mobile-number onboarding is a separate question from overseas merchant acceptance. NPCI says users with an international mobile number may be able to onboard if their bank account and chosen UPI app support it, subject to bank terms. That support does not mean UPI will work at every international merchant.

There are two different questions to ask before relying on UPI outside India. First, can your bank account and app be onboarded or used with your mobile number? Second, does the particular overseas merchant accept a UPI QR payment, and have you enabled the international service for the relevant account? A positive answer to one does not establish the other. NPCI describes overseas QR acceptance only at select merchant locations, not as universal coverage.

Check the amount and currency shown before confirming a cross-border payment. Review the conversion rate and any fees displayed or described by the app or bank, and make sure the Indian-currency amount is one you intend to authorize. International eligibility and terms depend on the participating bank and app, so check their current guidance for your account before travelling or attempting a payment.

Does UPI require NFC?

No. NFC is not a general requirement for UPI. It is used for the optional Tap & Pay flow, in which an NFC-capable phone or device reads a payee UPI ID or VPA from a tag or smart QR. NPCI describes special handling for transactions up to ₹500 through UPI Lite when it is enabled, with a PIN-based flow for other transactions; check current NPCI, bank and app guidance before relying on a threshold or feature rule, since operating rules can change.

For ordinary UPI use, such as choosing a recipient in an app or scanning a merchant QR code, NFC is not a general requirement. NFC matters only if you choose the Tap & Pay feature and have a compatible device. The threshold and PIN handling described for UPI Lite are feature-specific, not a general limit on UPI payments. Confirm the current rules in your app or bank’s guidance before relying on that option.

How to use UPI more safely

  • Verify the payee and amount first. Compare the displayed details with the person or merchant you intend to pay. Once initiated, NPCI says a payment cannot be stopped.
  • Keep the UPI PIN private. It authorizes a bank transaction. Do not share it with another person, even if they claim they need it to help, confirm a payment or arrange a refund.
  • Read the app’s action before approving. Make sure the screen is asking you to pay the intended recipient for the intended amount. A request involving a PIN is an authorization step, not proof that you are receiving money.
  • Use the status and support route for a problem. If the app shows a decline, NPCI says the reversal is real-time. If it shows pending, or the amount has not returned, check the specific transaction status and contact the app or bank through its support process. Do not assume every disputed or pending payment resolves instantly.

These checks are useful for both person-to-person transfers and merchant payments. For a transfer to another person, compare the displayed recipient details with the person you mean to pay. For a merchant, check that the QR payment screen shows the intended merchant and purchase amount. A familiar-looking app or QR code does not replace the final check of what the transaction will do.

Be particularly cautious when a payment flow is described as a way to receive money. A request to receive money and an instruction to authorize a payment are different actions. Read the app’s wording and inspect the payee and amount. If the screen asks you to authorize sending money, do not enter the PIN on the assumption that doing so will collect a payment or issue a refund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a transfer appears to have gone to the wrong recipient, NPCI’s stated rule that an initiated payment cannot be stopped means it is important to act through the app or bank’s support channel rather than expecting a cancellation button to reverse it. Keep the transaction status and details available when contacting support. The exact handling depends on the transaction and bank; do not assume a reversal or resolution timeline that the bank has not confirmed.

What UPI does not establish for every user

UPI’s general design does not set one universal limit, fee schedule, feature list or dispute-resolution timeline for every bank account and app. Those terms can differ by bank, app, transaction type and current operating rules. Before making a payment that depends on a particular limit, charge, international feature or processing timeline, check the bank and app guidance for the account you will use.

That variation also applies to what payment options appear in a particular app. One user may be able to link multiple accounts or pay using a particular identifier, while another user’s app or bank may offer a different set of options. Availability can change, so do not treat one app’s screen sequence or feature description as a universal UPI rule.

Similarly, a monthly system statistic does not tell you whether a particular payment will be accepted, how quickly a pending transaction will be investigated, or whether a specific merchant participates. For a planned payment, the useful checks are practical: confirm that the account and app support the feature, look for any applicable limit or fee, and review the app’s current status and support guidance if a transaction does not complete as expected.

What is a UPI-PIN?

A UPI PIN is a four- to six-digit code set during registration and used to authorize a UPI bank transaction. It is different from a bank-issued MPIN and should never be shared.

What happens if I enter the wrong UPI-PIN during a transaction?

An incorrect PIN cannot authorize the transaction. Retry, temporary-blocking and reset rules can vary by app and bank, so follow the message shown in your app and your bank’s guidance.

Can I stop a UPI payment after I initiate it?

NPCI says a payment cannot be stopped once initiated. Check the recipient and amount before entering your PIN. If a transaction is pending or has a problem, review its status and use the app or bank’s support process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is UPI the same as BHIM, PhonePe or Google Pay?

No. UPI is the payment system. BHIM is an NPCI UPI app, and PhonePe and Google Pay are examples of other apps that provide an interface to UPI.

Do I need NFC to use UPI?

No. NFC is for the optional Tap & Pay flow, not a general requirement for UPI. Ordinary app-based payments and QR payments do not make NFC a universal requirement.

Can I use UPI outside India?

NPCI describes QR-based UPI payments at select overseas merchant locations. You need an eligible app and must activate international service for the relevant bank account. Merchant acceptance and account eligibility are not universal.

Does UPI work with an international mobile number?

It may, if the bank account and chosen UPI app support onboarding with that number and the bank’s terms allow it. This is separate from whether an overseas merchant accepts UPI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are there universal UPI limits, fees or dispute timelines?

No single limit, fee schedule, feature list or dispute timeline is established for every bank and app. Check the current instructions and terms for the account, app and transaction you plan to use.

The Bottom Line

UPI is the payment system behind many instant bank-account transfers and merchant QR payments in India; BHIM, PhonePe and Google Pay are apps that provide ways to use it. Before authorizing a transaction, check the recipient and amount, keep your UPI PIN private, and follow your app or bank’s guidance for limits, fees, international use and transaction problems.
