What Is the Typical Salary for a Private Jet Pilot? 2025 Pay Data Explained

NBAA’s 2025 survey offers role and pay-factor comparisons for business aviation pilots, but its public summary does not provide a definitive dollar salary median.

There is no publicly supported, definitive 2025 dollar figure for the typical private jet pilot salary. The National Business Aviation Association’s 2025 compensation survey gives useful comparisons by role and job factors, but its public summary does not disclose absolute salary medians. It shows that captain, senior captain and chief pilot pay averaged substantially more than copilot pay, while aircraft type, employer, location and tenure also influenced compensation.

What is the average salary for a private jet pilot?

The most relevant public benchmark is the NBAA’s 2025 Compensation Survey Executive Summary, which covers business aviation flight departments. It does not publish the dollar median for private-jet pilots, so a specific public figure cannot be presented as the definitive 2025 average.

The survey included 415 NBAA member participants and data on 4,421 flight department employees. Salary data was effective March 1, 2025; bonus figures reflect bonuses earned in 2024. The findings describe corporate and business aviation departments, not every charter operator, contract pilot, owner-pilot or country. NBAA conducts the survey annually and says it is administered and audited by BDO USA.

The detailed survey is available to eligible NBAA Business or Operating members; participating companies receive access, and eligible nonparticipants may purchase it. The public summary therefore offers relative comparisons rather than a dollar-by-dollar salary table.

How much do private jet pilots make by role?

NBAA reports average pay for these roles as a percentage of average copilot pay:

Role Average pay relative to copilot
Copilot 100% (comparison baseline)
Captain 153%
Senior captain 171%
Chief pilot 180%

These are survey-level comparisons, not salary offers or guaranteed pay rates. Because the public summary does not provide the underlying copilot dollar median, it is not possible to convert these percentages into reliable dollar salaries using the survey alone. The figures also should not be treated as a universal ranking across all private-aviation jobs.

What factors affect private jet pilot pay?

In the NBAA survey, several groups benchmarked above the average pilot pay. The figures below are reported associations, not promises that a particular job will pay a specific premium.

Survey factor Pay relative to average pilot pay
Ultra-long-range aircraft (NBAA IFR range above 6,000 nautical miles) 136%
Family Transportation industry 127%
10 or more years in current position 124%
10 or more years with employer 122%
Corporate sales above $10 billion 119%
Western Pacific FAA region 119%
Company assets above $5 billion 114%
Major metropolitan location 106%

Aircraft category was the largest factor identified in the public summary. The 2025 survey added an ultra-long-range category for aircraft with an NBAA IFR range above 6,000 nautical miles. These comparisons help explain why job title alone is not enough to estimate pay: aircraft, employer, location and experience all matter.

How much do bonuses and benefits add?

NBAA reports that pilot bonuses averaged an additional 13% of pay. Benefits typically added an estimated 20% of value to the overall compensation package. Those figures are survey averages, not guaranteed additions for an individual offer; the survey also notes that target bonuses vary by role and employer size.

When comparing jobs, keep base salary distinct from total compensation. Consider the bonus target and what was actually paid, benefits, rank, aircraft class, location, tenure and documented duty or flight schedule. A total-package estimate can be useful, but it should not be labeled simply as salary.

How did private aviation pilot compensation change in 2025?

NBAA reported that first officers’ compensation rose more than 12% from the prior year and captains’ compensation rose more than 10%, based on its 2025 survey. These year-over-year increases indicate the direction and pace of change in the surveyed business aviation departments; they do not establish an absolute salary median for either role. See NBAA’s 2025 survey coverage.

Do private jet pilots make more than airline pilots?

Available national wage statistics do not settle that comparison. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported May 2025 median annual wages of $123,220 for commercial pilots and $232,140 for airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers. Neither category isolates private-jet pilots, so neither figure is a private-jet salary estimate or a like-for-like comparison with NBAA’s business aviation survey. The BLS figures are occupation-wide context; see its Airline and Commercial Pilots Occupational Outlook Handbook.

How to assess a private jet pilot salary offer

  1. Define the role: identify whether the position is copilot/first officer, captain, senior captain or chief pilot.
  2. Specify the aircraft and employer: note aircraft category and range, operator or flight department context, and company scale.
  3. Account for location and experience: compare the relevant geography or FAA region, time in the current position and tenure with the employer.
  4. Separate pay components: ask for base salary, bonus target and actual bonus history, and the value and terms of benefits.
  5. Compare working conditions: document expected duty and flight schedule before treating two offers as equivalent.

For a credible dollar estimate, use data that matches those specifics, such as employer-level figures or the full NBAA survey if eligible. Public information currently does not support substituting airline or commercial pilot wages, or applying NBAA percentages to unrelated wage figures, to manufacture a private-jet salary estimate.
