The CoinDesk 20 is a rules-based benchmark that tracks the performance of a selected group of major digital assets. CoinDesk Indices says it is market-capitalization weighted, rebalanced quarterly and calculated and published every five seconds. It is an index—not an ETF, ETP or futures contract—so a financial product linked to it has separate terms, costs, risks and availability.
What the CoinDesk 20 measures
CoinDesk Indices describes the CoinDesk 20 as “a broad-based index that measures the performance of top digital assets.” Its purpose is to serve as a benchmark and as a basis for trading and investment products. It is not simply a permanent list of the 20 largest cryptocurrencies: eligibility, selection, retention and weighting rules determine which assets are represented. See CoinDesk Indices’ CoinDesk 20 page and current constituents.
CoinDesk Indices reported that the benchmark captured 90% of the digital-asset market as of January 31, 2026. That is a dated claim from the index provider, not a live measure or a guarantee that the index represents every part of the market.
How constituents and weights are determined
The methodology ranks eligible assets and applies a retention rule for existing constituents. At reconstitution, weights are based on market capitalization but subject to concentration limits. The current methodology listing is dated July 7, 2026. Read the CoinDesk 20 Index Methodology.

| Weight rule | Limit | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Largest constituent | 30% | The largest asset’s weight may not exceed this cap at reconstitution. |
| Each other constituent | 20% | No other constituent may exceed this cap at reconstitution. |
If a constituent’s calculated market-cap weight exceeds its applicable cap, the excess is redistributed among uncapped assets in proportion to their market capitalizations. These are reconstitution limits, not fixed weights: the methodology says weights can drift as prices move after weighting factors are set.
When the index updates and rebalances
CoinDesk says the index is rebalanced quarterly. Separately, it reports that the index launched on January 12, 2024, uses October 4, 2022 as its base date, and is calculated and published every five seconds. The methodology describes the calculation as real time using the applicable Reference Rates for the underlying constituents. These details describe the benchmark; they do not establish that a linked ETF, ETP or futures contract trades or updates on the same schedule.

Where to find current constituents
Membership and weights can change at quarterly reconstitutions, and weights can also drift between them as asset prices move. Use the live constituents page rather than relying on an undated roster or search-result snapshot. CoinDesk Indices’ index documentation lists the methodology dated July 7, 2026; check the current page and its effective date when verifying membership or weights.
CoinDesk 20 index versus products linked to it
The index is a measurement framework. An ETF, ETP, futures contract, certificate or managed strategy referencing it is a separate financial product, with its own provider, costs, risks, access rules and jurisdictional availability. CoinDesk Indices lists the ProShares CoinDesk 20 Crypto ETF (KRYP), ICE CoinDesk 20 Index Futures and WisdomTree Physical CoinDesk 20 ETP (WCRP) as examples of linked products. Their appearance in the provider’s list is not an endorsement, and the list does not establish current availability or suitability for a particular investor. Check each provider’s current product disclosures and terms.

CoinDesk Indices reported more than $16 billion in total volume of linked products as of January 31, 2026. This is the index provider’s dated figure; it should not be read as a current trading-volume figure for any one product.

CoinDesk Indices says its index committee is the primary governance body overseeing index design, maintenance, publication and methodology. The committee and published rules provide the framework for changes; consult the current methodology and constituents pages for the rules and membership in force at the time you are evaluating the benchmark.

What to check before using a linked product
- What it tracks: confirm that the product references the CoinDesk 20 itself and understand how its provider seeks to deliver exposure.
- Structure and provider: distinguish an ETF, ETP, future or other instrument; each has different mechanics and obligations.
- Costs and risks: review fees, trading conditions, product-specific risks and any tracking differences in the provider’s disclosures.
- Access and location: confirm that the product is currently available to you under the rules where you live.
- Current index data: check the live constituent list, methodology and relevant effective dates rather than assuming an old roster or weight remains current.
