1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTuesday is a useful day to check first, but there is no weekday that is cheapest on every route. Historical airfare analyses disagree: Google found lower average fares for Monday–Wednesday departures, while Expedia’s 2026 report names Friday as cheapest overall and Tuesday for U.S. domestic flights. Your route, travel month, and return date matter more than any universal rule.
Which day of the week is usually cheapest to fly?
For a quick starting point, compare Tuesday and other midweek departures with weekend options. Travel experts interviewed by Travel + Leisure describe midweek as a common lower-fare window, while stressing that the pattern changes by destination and month. Skyscanner’s Laura Lindsay said its data showed Tuesday as the cheapest day to travel on average, but cautioned that the result varies by destination and month. An average is a useful prompt to compare dates, not a prediction for a particular flight.
The published averages do not identify one winner because they cover different periods, markets, and comparisons:
| Source and scope | Reported result | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Google, 2022 analysis of round-trip fares observed from August 1, 2017 through August 1, 2022 for 6–9-day and 13–16-day trips departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets | Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday departures averaged 12% cheaper than weekend departures; excluding international destinations, the potential savings were 20%. | Historical average fares by departure day in the specified U.S.-market sample. |
| Expedia Group, 2026 report | Friday departures were 8% cheaper than Sunday overall. | Overall departure-day fares in Expedia’s dataset. |
| Expedia Group, 2026 report | Tuesday departures were 14% cheaper than Sunday for U.S. domestic flights. | U.S. domestic departure-day fares in Expedia’s dataset. |
These findings are not directly interchangeable: Google reports a historical U.S.-market sample, while Expedia reports its own 2026 results and distinguishes overall flights from U.S. domestic trips. Neither establishes the cheapest day for every route or travel date.

Does the day you book matter as much as the day you fly?
No. The weekday you travel and the weekday you purchase are separate choices. Google’s 2022 analysis found that shopping on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday was only 1.9% cheaper on average than shopping on Saturday or Sunday. That purchase-day statistic does not show that Tuesday is a reliably better day to buy a ticket.
Airfares change as available fare inventory and demand change. Rather than delay a purchase solely to reach a particular weekday, compare the available itinerary with your travel needs and track the route if you are not ready to book. Jen Lozada, vice president of revenue for Tradewind Aviation, told Parade that pricing is largely automated and advised travelers to focus on securing a suitable available fare rather than waiting for a specific day.

How to compare flight days for your trip
- Compare the complete itinerary. Check the fare for both the outbound and return dates on your actual route. A cheaper departure day can be offset by a more expensive return.
- Use flexible-date views. Compare nearby departure and return dates in a calendar or date grid, rather than assuming a national average applies to your trip. Google describes calendar/date-grid tools and price tracking; Travel + Leisure reports a Skyscanner expert recommendation to use Price Alerts.
- Check the right comparison. Separate domestic from international travel and consider whether a statistic covers your geography. Expedia’s Tuesday finding applies to U.S. domestic flights, while its Friday result is reported overall.
- Account for the travel period. Compare within the same month and consider holidays and seasonal demand. A weekday pattern observed in one period may not hold during another.
- Set an alert if your dates are flexible. A route alert can help you watch fares while deciding, but it does not guarantee a lower fare or make a particular weekday the best time to purchase.
Does a cheaper flight day mean fewer crowds?
Not necessarily. Lower fares and airport crowd levels are different measures. Tiffany Funk, cofounder of point.me, told Travel + Leisure that crowd patterns depend on region and on whether a destination is primarily leisure- or business-focused. A fare average does not establish that an airport or flight will be less crowded.

Jesse Neugarten of Dollar Flight Club told Travel + Leisure that shifting a trip by one day can mean 15–20% savings. Treat that as an expert’s general estimate, not a guaranteed discount or a result from a disclosed route-by-route dataset. The amount, if any, depends on the itinerary and dates you compare.
