There is no single universal average. In The Knot’s 2024 U.S. survey, the average engagement-ring center stone was 1.8 carats; in BriteCo’s 2025 appraisal data, the median center stone was 2.0 carats. Those figures describe different populations and use different statistics, so they are useful benchmarks—not competing answers or a recommended target.
What the reported averages measure
Carat is a diamond’s weight. An engagement ring can be described by the weight of its center stone or by the combined weight of its center and accent stones, and those totals are not interchangeable. The Knot’s 2024 Jewelry & Engagement Study reported a 1.8-carat average center stone and a 1.7-carat average for the entire ring, including accents. The Knot’s study surveyed more than 7,000 recently engaged or married couples in the United States.
Other sources report different figures because they measure different groups in different ways. BriteCo’s 2025 figures are medians from appraisal records, not survey averages. BriteCo’s index draws on anonymized appraisals created using its appraisal tools from January 2019 through June 2026. A median is the midpoint of a dataset; an average, or mean, is calculated by adding values and dividing by the number of observations.
JCK reported a separate 2024 average of 1.07 carats for U.S. natural-diamond engagement-ring center stones, citing the Natural Diamond Council. That figure has a natural-diamond-only scope and should not be treated as an average for all engagement rings. JCK’s report covers that industry statistic.

How size differs by diamond origin
Both The Knot and BriteCo report larger center-stone figures for lab-grown than for natural or mined diamonds in their respective datasets:

These rows are not direct comparisons: one reports survey averages and the other appraisal-data medians. The Knot said lab-grown stones accounted for 52% of center stones in its 2024 study. BriteCo reported a 47% lab-grown share for 2025 and 51% for January–June 2026. Those different study frames and time periods should not be combined into one market share.

Why a carat number does not tell you how large a diamond looks
Carat measures weight, not the stone’s face-up dimensions. Shape and cut affect how that weight is distributed and how large a diamond appears from above. The Knot quotes Emily Langmade, Director of Design and Development at Frank Darling: “Various shapes also carry their weight differently, meaning some will appear significantly larger than others, even at the same carat weight.”
The setting also affects the look and the ring’s total carat weight. A halo places smaller stones around the center and can make it appear larger; sidestones add diamonds or other gems beside it. Neither changes the center stone’s own weight, though both can increase the total weight of the ring.

Use the average as context, not a buying target
A suitable center-stone size depends on your budget, preferred appearance, and priorities among the diamond’s other qualities. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) describes the 4Cs—color, clarity, cut, and carat weight—as factors that influence a diamond’s value and appearance. Its diamond buying guide recommends deciding what matters most to you within your price range.
