The number 402-935-7733 is associated with PayPal Customer Service, and PayPal says it can appear on a bank or credit-card statement next to the word “PayPal” when a payment was processed through PayPal. The number confirms that PayPal was involved in the payment. It does not tell you which seller, item, or account the charge belongs to. To resolve a charge like this, match it against your recent PayPal activity first, and if nothing matches, report it to PayPal as unauthorized.
Why this number appears on a statement
PayPal’s US help page, “Why is the number 402-935-7733 showing on my bank or credit card statement?”, states: “When making a purchase with PayPal, the charge may appear as ‘PayPal’ along with the number 402-935-7733 on your bank or credit card statement.” PayPal is the publisher of that page, and it does not attribute the sentence to any individual.
Two situations commonly produce the descriptor:
- You paid a merchant through PayPal. The charge is a normal PayPal-processed payment, and the statement shows PayPal’s customer-service number as the contact.
- A merchant uses PayPal as its card processor. You may have paid by card at a store that never mentioned PayPal. Because PayPal handled the card transaction, the same descriptor can appear, even though you did not choose PayPal as a payment method.
What the number does and does not tell you
- It tells you PayPal processed or was involved in the payment. That is the only fact the descriptor establishes.
- It does not identify the merchant, the item, or the account holder. A phone number cannot reveal which seller was paid.
- It does not prove the charge is authorized. PayPal can be the processor for a legitimate payment and for a payment you never made, so the statement alone cannot settle the question.
How to check the charge
- Write down the statement date, the exact amount, and the descriptor as it appears. Use the precise text, since the descriptor is the only clue your statement gives you.
- Sign in to PayPal through its official website or app and open your recent activity, which PayPal’s help page recommends checking.
- Look for a transaction with a matching amount and a date close to the statement date. Banks often post a payment a day or more after it is made, and a foreign-currency charge may show a different amount than the one you see in PayPal.
- If you find a match, open the transaction details and confirm the merchant. If the merchant is one you recognize, the charge is accounted for.
- If nothing matches, report the transaction to PayPal as unauthorized using the process described below.
How to report an unrecognized PayPal charge
PayPal’s US User Agreement, sections 12.1 through 12.4 (accessed 2026-10-08), asks users to notify PayPal promptly about suspected unauthorized transactions or statement errors. The agreement describes two reporting channels: the Resolution Center and the phone. For current contact options, use the official PayPal website rather than a number copied from an unfamiliar message or call, because scam messages often imitate support numbers.
The same agreement ties eligibility for its 100% protection on eligible unauthorized transactions or other account errors to notification within 60 days after the transaction or error first appears in the account statement. The agreement says that period may be extended for a good reason. This is a term of PayPal’s US agreement, not a general card-dispute deadline. Your card issuer or bank has its own dispute process and timelines, so report to both promptly. Agreement terms can change, so confirm the current version on PayPal’s website.
