Sell-through rate (STR) is the percentage of available inventory sold during a chosen period. Retailers use it to gauge how quickly products move and to inform purchasing, replenishment, marketing, and markdown decisions. The percentage is useful only when you know its time window and exactly which inventory the calculation counts.

What is sell-through rate?

Sell-through rate measures the share of a product’s available inventory sold over a defined period. It is usually used at the product or variant level, rather than as a broad measure of a retailer’s entire inventory.

For example, a rate calculated for one month answers a different question from a rate calculated for a season. A rate can also change depending on whether the calculation counts units received, starting stock, or units sold plus inventory left at the end. State the period and inventory definition whenever you report or compare STR.

How do you calculate sell-through rate?

Shopify Help Center’s product sell-through report uses this formula:

Sell-through rate = units sold ÷ (units sold + ending inventory) × 100

In an illustrative example, suppose a retailer sold 60 units during the selected period and had 40 units remaining at period end. The calculation is 60 ÷ (60 + 40) × 100, or 60%. This result uses Shopify’s sold-plus-ending-inventory denominator; it is not a universal formula for every report or business.

Some retail explanations compare units sold with units received during the same period instead. That approach uses a different stock cohort, so it can produce a different result. Do not compare percentages calculated with different denominators as though they were equivalent. Shopify’s inventory reports documentation describes its report’s calculation and handling of inventory data.

What is a good sell-through rate?

There is no single rate that is good for every retailer, product, or time period. Shopify’s article dated October 3, 2025 describes 80% or higher as a benchmark, while also noting that rates vary by industry. Treat that as Shopify’s generalized editorial benchmark, not a universal retail standard or an independently verified cross-industry result. See Shopify’s sell-through rate guide.

A high rate can indicate strong demand, but it might also mean the retailer bought too little or priced the item too low. A low rate can point to overbuying or weak demand, but timing, pricing, seasonality, and stock availability may also explain it. STR does not tell you whether sales were profitable.

  • Check margin and discounts: A product can sell quickly after deep markdowns while contributing less profit.
  • Check stock availability: A stockout can limit sales and make demand look weaker than it was.
  • Check timing and seasonality: Compare periods that make sense for the item, and account for seasonal demand.
  • Check replenishment lead time: A fast-moving item may need an earlier reorder if new stock takes a long time to arrive.

Why is sell-through rate important?

Used with consistent definitions, STR helps operators compare movement across products, variants, or periods. It can flag items that are moving slowly, help assess whether a product needs focused marketing or a markdown, and inform future order quantities and replenishment plans. Shopify describes sell-through analytics as part of its product analytics and inventory reporting tools in its product analytics overview.

Use the metric as a signal rather than an automatic instruction. Before changing a price or placing an order, consider the item’s margin, expected demand, stock position, and how long replenishment takes. The rate describes movement over a selected period; it does not, by itself, explain why that movement occurred.

Sell-through rate vs. inventory turnover

Sell-through rate and inventory turnover both describe inventory movement, but they answer different questions. STR is typically a product-level percentage sold over a defined period. Inventory turnover is a broader efficiency measure of how many times inventory is sold and replaced over a period, commonly calculated as cost of goods sold divided by average inventory.

Metric What it measures Common calculation Useful for
Sell-through rate Share of a product’s available units sold during a chosen period Units sold ÷ (units sold + ending inventory) × 100 in Shopify’s product report Short-term product movement and product-level buying or markdown decisions
Inventory turnover How often inventory is sold and replaced over a period Cost of goods sold ÷ average inventory A broader view of inventory efficiency over a longer period

Shopify discusses the distinction in its sell-through rate guide. A strong STR for one product does not necessarily mean the business’s overall inventory is turning efficiently, and turnover does not show the share of a particular item sold in a short window.

How Shopify’s product sell-through report handles inventory

The calculation in Shopify’s report has specific data rules, so its result may not match a manual calculation based on a different definition. Shopify Help Center says the report automatically ignores negative inventory quantities; untracked products are treated as having sold zero inventory units; and a negative ending quantity is treated as zero.

The report’s quantity-sold figure does not include returns, manual inventory adjustments, or transfer receipts. Variants appear only if they have sold at least once before or during the selected period. These exclusions matter when reconciling the report against another system or a hand-built spreadsheet.

Shopify says the most recent period in the Product sell-through report is usually available about two days before the current date, with a longer delay possible for some time zones. Use the exact dates shown in the report rather than treating its latest result as live. These timing details and calculation rules are documented in Shopify’s inventory reports help page.

How to compare sell-through rates fairly

Before comparing products, stores, or periods, align the inputs that can change the result:

  • Time window: Use the same length and comparable dates.
  • Product and location scope: Compare like-for-like products, variants, and locations.
  • Inventory denominator: Identify whether the calculation uses receipts, starting stock, or sold units plus ending inventory.
  • Stock changes: Account for how the calculation treats restocks, returns, transfers, and adjustments.
  • Sales conditions: Note whether a product was discounted or constrained by a stockout.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
