Turki Alalshikh and Bristol City did have investment conversations, but the available reporting does not establish an agreed or completed takeover of the men’s club. Alalshikh denied he would buy Bristol City in September 2025; the club’s CEO confirmed conversations about investment the following month and said nothing was imminent. A later majority-stake sale involving Bristol City Women was a separate transaction.
What is confirmed—and what is not
The clearest account comes from Bristol City CEO Tom Rawcliffe, who told BBC Sport on 16 October 2025 that the club had conversations with Alalshikh about investment. Rawcliffe said the club was open to investment if it was right, but added: “At the moment there’s nothing imminent.” The report confirms discussions; it does not report a formal bid, an accepted offer, a signed agreement or a completed purchase. BBC Sport, 16 October 2025
That distinction matters: “investment” can describe a range of possibilities, from a minority stake to a controlling acquisition. The cited reporting does not identify the proposed amount, ownership percentage, legal entity or transaction terms. It therefore does not support describing the talks as a takeover deal.
How the story developed
February and May 2025: Lansdown discusses investment
On 24 February 2025, owner Steve Lansdown said Bristol City was “not close” to a takeover or new investment. He also described the club as part of the wider Bristol Sport structure, which included the men’s and women’s football teams, Bristol Bears men’s and women’s rugby, and Bristol Flyers basketball. That context makes it important to ask exactly which business or team a reported transaction would cover. BBC Sport, 24 February 2025

On 12 May, Lansdown said there had been “very constructive conversations” with potential investors from abroad, while indicating there would be no change to the club’s transfer approach or budget that summer. Those remarks establish general investor discussions, not an agreement with Alalshikh. BBC Sport, 12 May 2025
September 2025: speculation and a direct denial
On 18 September, Bristol Sport CEO and club director Gavin Marshall called reports of a Saudi takeover “purely speculation,” saying Lansdown’s openness to investment had led to speculation about different interested parties. BBC Sport, 18 September 2025

On 24 September, Alalshikh publicly denied that he would buy the club, posting: “It is not true that I will buy Bristol City FC 👍”. The denial addressed a purchase at that time; it does not rule out the separate possibility of conversations about investment. Annahar, quoting Alalshikh’s post, 24 September 2025
October 2025: the club confirms conversations
Rawcliffe’s later confirmation clarifies the apparent contradiction: Alalshikh could deny that he would buy Bristol City while the club could still have spoken with him about investment. A conversation is not itself a bid or purchase agreement. Rawcliffe also described interest from US- and Middle East-based backers, without saying a transaction was close. BBC Sport, 16 October 2025

June and August 2026: separate developments
On 8 June 2026, Bristol City Women announced that Mercury13 had acquired a majority stake in the women’s club, with the Lansdown family retaining a minority shareholding. That announcement concerns Bristol City Women, not evidence that the men’s club was sold. Bristol City Women FC, 8 June 2026
On 10 August 2026, BBC Sport reported that Alalshikh’s proposed purchase of Derby County through Lion Sport had collapsed after the group withdrew. This is a separate club and proposal; it does not establish that he made an offer for Bristol City. BBC Sport, 10 August 2026

Why the women’s-club sale is not a Bristol City takeover
“Bristol City” can refer casually to more than one part of a broader sporting structure, so ownership claims need to specify the team and company involved. Mercury13’s announced majority acquisition was of Bristol City Women. It should not be treated as a change of control at the men’s club. Companies House filing history for Bristol City Women FC likewise relates to the women’s company, not proof of a men’s-club ownership transfer. Companies House filing history: Bristol City Women FC

- What kind of transaction? A minority investment is different from a controlling stake or full acquisition.
- Which entity and teams are included? A proposal involving the men’s club is not interchangeable with one involving Bristol City Women or another Bristol Sport asset.
- What stage has it reached? A conversation, formal offer, accepted offer, required approval and completed transaction are distinct milestones.
- Who is making the claim? A named party’s public statement is different evidence from speculation or claims attributed to unnamed sources.
The cited accounts do not disclose a valuation, bid price, proposed ownership share or transaction terms for the men’s club. No such figures can be responsibly inferred from the reports.
How current is the available picture?
The latest Bristol City investment account cited here is Rawcliffe’s October 2025 confirmation of conversations and his statement that nothing was imminent. Later cited events concern the women’s club and Derby County, not a new Bristol City offer. The available reporting therefore confirms historic conversations but does not establish an agreed takeover; it cannot determine whether private discussions or a new offer arose after October 2025.
