Promotion is the communication part of the marketing mix. It covers everything a business does to inform customers about what it sells, attract their attention, and explain why they might choose its product or service over another. Advertising is one part of promotion, not the whole of it.
Where promotion sits in the marketing mix
The marketing mix is the set of connected decisions a business makes about what it sells and how it reaches buyers. The classic version, often called the 4Ps, has four parts. OpenStax’s introductory marketing textbook, Principles of Marketing (section 1.2, dated January 25, 2023), describes them this way:

- Product: what is offered.
- Price: what the customer pays.
- Place: where and how the product is made available.
- Promotion: how the business communicates with customers.
Promotion is therefore one of four parts, not a synonym for the marketing mix. It works alongside the other three. A well-communicated offer still fails if the price is wrong or customers cannot find it, and a good product can go unnoticed without promotion. (OpenStax, section 1.2)
Promotion versus advertising
People often use “promotion” and “advertising” interchangeably, but advertising is only one method within promotion. Public relations, personal selling, sales promotion, direct marketing, and digital communication are also promotion. OpenStax’s section on the promotion mix (section 13.1) lists advertising, sales promotion, personal selling, public relations, direct marketing, and internet and digital marketing as the main elements. The promotion mix: the main methods
The promotion mix is the combination of methods a business uses to reach its intended audience. Each method does a different job, and businesses usually combine several.

- Marketing 14th edition By Roger Kerin and Steven Hartley
| Method | What it involves | Where OpenStax says it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising | Paid communication from an identified sponsor | Reaching a broad audience |
| Sales promotion | Short-term incentives such as coupons, rebates, samples, or contests | Encouraging trial or a near-term purchase; a tactic rather than the whole long-term strategy |
| Personal selling | Direct interaction between a salesperson and a prospective customer | Complex, customized, or higher-priced products where questions and tailored explanations matter |
| Public relations | Building relationships and reputation with media, communities, government, and investors | Examples include press releases, events, and annual reports |
| Direct and digital marketing | Websites, email, search, social platforms, and online advertising | Targeting and measurement; OpenStax does not establish that any one channel is always more effective |
The textbook’s comparison points are useful for judging any method: audience reach and targeting, whether the message is paid or earned, how much personal interaction it involves, whether it suits immediate response or longer-term awareness, fit with complex or expensive purchases, and how easily activity can be coordinated and measured. OpenStax does not give current cost or effectiveness benchmarks for each method, so treat any ranking of methods by results as something to test in your own situation.
How businesses choose methods
There is no universal best channel. The right mix depends on the goal, the audience, and the buying situation. A practical way to decide runs through five questions:

- Audience and reach: Who needs to receive the message, and where can the business reach them?
- Objective: Is the goal awareness, product trial, an immediate sale, customer retention, or teaching customers how a service works?
- Product and buying situation: Complex, customizable, or expensive purchases can justify personal selling. A short-term offer can use sales promotion.
- Coordination: Do the methods reinforce one message, and are they timed together?
- Evaluation: What do the results show, and how should future choices change?
OpenStax’s backpack example shows the first question in practice. The company has to decide which promotional channels will reach likely backpack buyers and when those buyers are most likely to see the message. The same logic applies to a local shop, a software company, or a bank launching a new account.
Integrated marketing communications
Using several methods creates a risk: each team can send a different message. Integrated marketing communications (IMC) is the approach that prevents this. OpenStax defines it in its promotion section:
Rank #4
“IMC involves carefully coordinating all promotional activities—traditional advertising, sales promotion, public relations, online advertising and promotion, e-commerce, packaging, and other forms of promotion—to produce a consistent, unified message that is customer focused.”
In practice, IMC means checking that the advertising, the website, the sales team’s pitch, and the packaging all tell the same story, and that campaigns are scheduled so they support each other. It also means tracking results so the next campaign improves on the last.

Reading promotion as a consumer
Understanding promotion helps with everyday money decisions, because most of the offers you see are designed to change your timing or your choice.
- Time-limited sales promotions (coupons, rebates, free samples, contests) are built to prompt a near-term purchase. Before acting, ask whether you would buy the item at the regular price.
- Rebates often require paperwork and a deadline. The advertised price is only the starting point, so compare the net cost after the rebate is received.
- Personal selling is typically used for higher-priced or more complex purchases. A salesperson’s explanation is useful information, but it is also a sales process. Compare the total cost and terms in writing before deciding.
- Advertising and digital promotion can be targeted at people who fit a profile. An offer that appears in your feed reflects the seller’s targeting, not an independent judgment of what suits you.
Limits of the framework
The 4Ps and the promotion mix are teaching models. They describe how businesses organize their decisions, not how any particular campaign performs. The lists of methods also vary between textbooks, and OpenStax’s examples are tied to specific cases. Its chapter includes a 2021 Super Bowl advertising price and audience figure as an illustration of one event, not as a current or typical benchmark for advertising costs. Use the framework to ask good questions, and use current, source-dated data before making a spending decision.
