Premium Economy is an airline cabin or fare tier between standard Economy and Business. It commonly offers a roomier seat, with some combination of extra legroom, recline, baggage, meals, seat selection or priority services. The package varies by airline, aircraft, route and fare, so whether it is worth the extra cost depends on the exact flight and which included benefits you will use.
What does Premium Economy include?
There is no universal Premium Economy specification. The most consistent distinction is more personal space than standard Economy; the rest of the bundle is airline-specific. An airline may include benefits such as checked baggage, standard seat selection, meals, priority check-in or boarding, or an amenity kit, but the cabin name alone does not establish what is included.
For example, Delta describes a wider seat, extra recline, and foot or leg rests on select widebody aircraft, while warning that configurations and features vary by aircraft (Delta Premium Select). Air New Zealand lists complimentary meals and drinks, standard seat selection, and specified carry-on and checked baggage allowances on its product page (Air New Zealand Premium Economy). American Airlines’ UK page describes wider adjustable seats, more legroom, chef-inspired meals and priority privileges; drink and amenity-kit service has conditions (American Airlines Premium Economy).
These are examples, not category-wide guarantees. Check the precise fare rules and flight details before treating any benefit as included.

How is Premium Economy different from Business Class?
Premium Economy is not automatically a discounted version of Business Class. Its seat and service are generally a step up from standard Economy, but the product depends on the carrier. Virgin Atlantic, for example, describes Premium with a wider seat and extra legroom, while its Upper Class offering includes a fully flat bed and lounge access. Virgin says lounge access is not standard with Premium (Virgin Atlantic Premium).
Compare the actual seat and services on your flight rather than relying on cabin labels. A Premium Economy fare should not be assumed to include a lie-flat bed or lounge access.

What do airlines’ published details show?
The figures below belong to the named airline’s product description; they are not industry standards. Availability and fare conditions can affect what a traveler receives.
| Airline and product | Published details | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Air New Zealand Premium Economy | Two checked bags up to 50 lb each; two carry-on pieces up to 15 lb each; complimentary meals and drinks; free standard seat selection. | Airline-specific allowances; confirm current rules and applicability to the booked fare. The amenity kit is limited to long-haul, Perth and Hawaii travel. Source |
| Virgin Atlantic Premium | Seat pitch up to 38 inches; two checked bags up to 23 kg each; one 10 kg carry-on. | Figures are from Virgin Atlantic’s product page accessed October 8, 2026; seat pitch is an airline-specific maximum. Lounge access is not standard. Source |
| Air India Premium Economy | 32-inch seat pitch and 4-inch recline; preferred seat selection, priority airport services, meals and selected amenity kits are described. | These are Air India’s product details in an article published April 16, 2025, not category benchmarks; route coverage in that article is dated. | Lufthansa Premium Economy | More space, screens and headphones, complimentary meals and drinks, and a travel kit are described. | Lufthansa’s “up to 50% more room on all sides” is its own product-page claim, not an independent or category-wide measurement. Source |
For connecting itineraries, verify the operating airline, aircraft and cabin on each segment. A codeshare itinerary can involve different operating carriers, and aircraft features can vary even within one airline’s product.

How to decide whether the extra fare is worth it
- Compare the total prices for the same trip. Use the same dates, route and itinerary, and compare the complete Premium Economy fare with the Economy fare you would actually buy. Fares vary with route, dates, booking lead time, demand and availability; Virgin Atlantic states these factors for its fares (Virgin Atlantic). There is no supported universal dollar or percentage cutoff for a worthwhile upgrade.
- Confirm what is operating each segment. Check the operating carrier, aircraft and exact seat product, especially on connections or codeshares. Delta notes that seat configurations and features vary by aircraft (Delta), and Air India’s published route details are tied to its product description at the time it was published (Air India).
- List the benefits you would otherwise pay for. Check baggage, advance seat selection, meals, priority check-in or boarding, and change or cancellation terms. A benefit only adds value to your comparison if it matters to you and is actually included in that fare.
- Compare alternatives you would genuinely choose. Set Premium Economy against the Economy seat plus any add-ons you would buy. Compare with Business only if the price difference and the actual seat and service make that a relevant alternative.
- Decide what the added space and services are worth to you. More room may matter more on a long trip or when a particular seat, baggage allowance or priority service has practical value for your plans. That is a personal trade-off, not a guarantee about comfort or how you will feel after the flight.
With the same itinerary in view, the useful question is not whether Premium Economy is worth a fixed amount for everyone; it is whether the fare difference buys benefits you value more than the money you would keep.
