PayPal for WooCommerce usually means WooCommerce PayPal Payments, the official PayPal extension that connects a WooCommerce store to PayPal’s payment services. Depending on the merchant’s country, account eligibility, currency, and configuration, it can offer PayPal wallet payments, cards, Venmo, Pay Later, digital wallets, and local payment methods. The extension is free to install, but payment processing is not.
What PayPal for WooCommerce is
WooCommerce is the ecommerce platform running in WordPress: it manages products, carts, checkout, orders, shipping, taxes, and customer accounts. PayPal is an external payment service. The official WooCommerce PayPal Payments extension connects the store to PayPal so customers can pay and payment events can be reflected in WooCommerce.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The extension is not a PayPal account and does not remove processing fees. A merchant needs a PayPal account—normally a business account for commercial selling—and must complete any required setup or eligibility checks. In WooCommerce, the integration creates payment methods and can render express buttons at selected points in the shopping journey, not just a single payment option at checkout. The WooCommerce payment gateway documentation explains the broader role gateways play in communicating payment actions and status to the store.

WooCommerce PayPal Payments may expose several distinct methods. Their availability is not guaranteed for every store: merchant and customer locations, currency, product type, PayPal account approval, and checkout configuration can all matter.

- PayPal wallet: Customers generally sign in to PayPal to approve a wallet payment.
- Credit and debit cards: Eligible merchants can enable advanced card processing so customers may pay without a PayPal account. This is not automatic guest checkout for every store.
- Venmo: Generally relevant to eligible US merchants and shoppers.
- Pay Later: Region-specific installment or deferred-payment options, subject to availability and approval.
- Express checkout buttons: Buttons may appear on product, cart, or checkout pages, depending on settings and compatibility.
- Apple Pay and Google Pay: These may be available subject to merchant eligibility, account and domain requirements, configuration, and location.
- Local and alternative payment methods: Options depend on country and currency. WooCommerce identifies Pay Upon Invoice as a Germany-only option in its current documentation.
- Fastlane: A PayPal checkout experience available where supported.
See the compatibility guidance and local payment methods documentation before promising a method to customers. A listed feature is a capability, not proof that it will appear for a particular merchant, buyer, or product.
How the current extension differs from older PayPal options
Use the current WooCommerce PayPal Payments extension for a new integration rather than relying on outdated instructions for legacy products. WooCommerce says its PayPal Checkout extension is no longer available for download through the Marketplace and official support ended on March 1, 2022; its guidance recommends moving to PayPal Payments. Details are in the PayPal Checkout documentation.
PayPal Standard is also not the preferred choice for a new setup: WooCommerce published a sunsetting announcement on June 24, 2026. That announcement establishes a sunset process, not that PayPal Standard has already been universally disabled. Existing merchants should follow current WooCommerce notices and plan a tested migration rather than assume either continued long-term support or an immediate shutdown.
Do customers need a PayPal account?
Customers using the PayPal wallet generally sign in to PayPal. An eligible store may also offer card fields or another card-payment flow that lets a customer pay without opening or using a PayPal account. Whether that option appears depends on the merchant’s approval for the relevant card service, supported country and currency, enabled settings, and compatibility with the checkout and product.
Some recurring-payment arrangements or PayPal products may require a PayPal account or a specific approved flow. If guest card checkout is important to the business, verify it in the store’s live configuration and test it as a customer; do not infer availability merely from installing the extension. PayPal describes its checkout options at PayPal Checkout.

Requirements and compatibility to check
The official Marketplace listing gives these baseline requirements for the extension: WordPress 6.5 or newer, WooCommerce 9.6 or newer, and PHP 7.4 or newer. It also reports compatibility through WooCommerce 10.8 and WordPress 7.0 for the listing version observed in August 2026. Treat those as listing-specific signals, not a guarantee for every theme, plugin combination, or server. Check the live product page for current requirements before installing.
- A PayPal account and a merchant country and currency supported for the payment methods you intend to offer.
- A functioning HTTPS website and a working WooCommerce checkout.
- Current WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, theme, and checkout-related extensions.
- A full backup of the WordPress files and database before making payment or checkout changes.
The official extension listing says it supports WooCommerce Blocks and High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS). Compatibility claims do not replace testing the actual store’s checkout, products, shipping and tax rules, and customizations.
How to install and connect PayPal Payments
- Back up the site. Save both the database and files, and confirm you know how to restore them.
- Check the environment. Confirm HTTPS, supported WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP versions, and review theme and checkout-extension compatibility.
- Install the official extension. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New, search for “WooCommerce PayPal Payments,” and verify the publisher or official WooCommerce Marketplace listing before installing. Install and activate it.
- Run setup and connect the merchant account. Follow the extension’s onboarding flow and authorize the appropriate PayPal account.
- Choose sandbox or live mode. Use sandbox credentials for functional testing; do not confuse a successful sandbox transaction with live-account approval.
- Configure methods and display locations. Enable only the PayPal, card, wallet, Pay Later, or local options you are eligible to use. Review express-button placements on product, cart, and checkout pages.
- Review store behavior. Check merchant country, currency, shipping, tax, refunds, subscriptions, and any checkout settings that affect orders.
- Test, then go live carefully. Place a sandbox order and verify order status and payment records. After tests pass, switch to live mode and make a controlled small real transaction, confirming settlement and refund behavior.
The official setup and documentation hub contains current instructions for account setup, settings, payments and refunds, subscriptions, compatibility, currencies, fraud prevention, and troubleshooting. Screen labels can change, so use it alongside the installed extension’s current onboarding flow.
What to test before launch
A visible button is not enough to establish that checkout works. Use sandbox mode to exercise the relevant paths, then perform a controlled live transaction because account eligibility and live behavior can differ.
- PayPal wallet payment, and guest card checkout if enabled; test Venmo and Pay Later only if relevant and available.
- Successful, declined, canceled, and abandoned attempts. Confirm an unfinished or canceled payment does not become a paid order.
- Full and partial refunds, including whether the WooCommerce order and PayPal transaction remain synchronized.
- Shipping and tax calculations, coupons, variable products, and product add-ons or required fields.
- Mobile checkout, and both Checkout Blocks and classic checkout if the store offers both.
- Currency behavior, email notifications, inventory reduction, and order status after returning from PayPal.
- Subscription signup and renewal, failed renewal, cancellation, payment-method changes, and refunds if the store sells subscriptions.
- Refresh and back-button behavior to check for duplicate orders or payments.
Payment confirmation must reach WooCommerce through the integration. A browser redirect or customer screenshot alone is not proof that an order was paid. Check the PayPal transaction and WooCommerce order record before fulfilling an uncertain order.

PayPal for WooCommerce fees
The extension listing presents WooCommerce PayPal Payments as free, with free updates and customer support. That describes the software, not payment acceptance. PayPal processing fees are separate, and the published figures below are US merchant rates shown on PayPal’s fee page, updated July 15, 2026, and checked August 18, 2026. They are not worldwide rates or a quote for every merchant.

| US payment type | Published domestic rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal Checkout | 3.49% + $0.49 | US merchant pricing; payment and account terms apply. |
| Venmo | 3.49% + $0.49 | Eligibility and product terms apply. |
| Pay Later | 4.99% + $0.49 | Separate published rate from ordinary PayPal Checkout. |
| Standard credit and debit card payments | 2.99% + $0.49 | PayPal Checkout card pricing. |
| Expanded Checkout card processing | 2.89% + $0.29 | Requires relevant approval or enrollment under the applicable PayPal agreement. |
PayPal’s cited US merchant fee table lists an additional 1.50% percentage fee for international commercial transactions. Currency conversion, chargebacks, refunds, reserves, risk adjustments, optional fraud tools, and other services may affect the total cost. Check PayPal’s US merchant fees and its pricing summary for terms applicable to the account and transaction.
The gateway is only one part of the expense. Hosting, SSL or other security services, paid WooCommerce extensions, subscription tools, fraud prevention, currency conversion, and developer support for checkout conflicts can add operating costs.
Advantages and trade-offs
Why a store may add it
- Customers who already use PayPal can pay with a familiar wallet, and express checkout may reduce the amount of form entry for some buyers.
- One integration can potentially expose PayPal, cards, Venmo, Pay Later, digital wallets, and regional methods, subject to eligibility.
- Eligible card processing can let customers pay without a PayPal account.
- The official listing reports support for Blocks and HPOS, and the extension supports subscription use cases with WooCommerce Subscriptions subject to feature requirements.
PayPal’s product materials make marketing claims about purchase likelihood and larger carts with Pay Later; these are PayPal’s claims, not a guarantee of results for an individual store. Seller protection and dispute programs may apply only to eligible transactions under applicable terms, and do not remove the merchant’s obligations.
What to weigh before relying on it
- Fees vary by payment method; PayPal wallet or Pay Later rates may be higher than card-processing alternatives in the US rates cited above.
- Regional availability and account approval can limit card fields, Venmo, Pay Later, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or local methods.
- More buttons are not always better. Duplicate-looking choices or buttons in unintended locations can confuse shoppers.
- Redirects, popups, address handling, and asynchronous status updates can interact poorly with caching, firewalls, JavaScript optimization, security plugins, custom checkout fields, or a theme.
- Account reviews, holds, reserves, limitations, disputes, and currency conversion are operational and financial risks to consider.
- Subscription support is not universal recurring-payment support; method, vaulting, country, and account approval can matter.
Important cases: subscriptions, Blocks, and product-page buttons
Subscriptions
The extension supports WooCommerce Subscriptions, but recurring payments can require PayPal vaulting, reference transactions, or another approved recurring-payment flow. Test the complete lifecycle, not just signup: first payment, renewal, failed renewal, cancellation, payment-method change, and refund. See the PayPal subscription integration help and the WooCommerce extension documentation.

Checkout Blocks
Current compatibility documentation lists support for WooCommerce Blocks, but display and payment-method behavior may differ from classic checkout. Test the exact block-based checkout and theme used by the store. The compatibility page is the appropriate reference for current limitations.
Express buttons and alternative methods
Product-page buttons can offer a shorter route, but may bypass steps in the normal cart or checkout. Test them with variable products, required fields, product add-ons, shipping rules, coupons, subscriptions, and any age or service restrictions. Alternative methods differ by market and may have limits in express checkout; enable only options the business can explain, support, and reconcile. See the local-method guidance.

PayPal button is missing
- Confirm the extension is active, the account is connected, and PayPal is enabled in WooCommerce payment settings.
- Check sandbox versus live mode, merchant country and currency, and whether that method is enabled and available to the customer.
- Check the configured button location, product type, and checkout type.
- Temporarily investigate theme, cache, optimization, consent, security, and JavaScript conflicts; review WooCommerce and PayPal logs before reinstalling.
Card fields do not appear
Check whether the merchant has approval for advanced card processing, whether the country and currency are supported, and whether card processing is enabled. Incomplete account onboarding, incompatible checkout customizations, or JavaScript errors can also prevent fields from appearing. Eligibility is not established by the mere presence of the extension.
An order remains pending or on hold
Look up the transaction in PayPal and inspect PayPal and WooCommerce logs. Check whether the customer canceled or never completed payment, whether callback or webhook delivery was blocked by a firewall or cache, and whether an order was created without a successful capture. Do not manually mark it paid without confirming the transaction in PayPal.

Investigate repeated clicks, refreshes, back-button use, timeouts followed by retries, checkout customizations, and plugin conflicts. Determine whether a payment was authorized or captured separately from whether a second WooCommerce order was created.
Best Value
Refund does not synchronize
Confirm the original transaction is refundable and linked to the correct PayPal transaction. Use the supported WooCommerce/PayPal refund path, verify the amount for partial refunds, and check capture state and currency conversion when a refund fails.
Fraud and callback protection
WooCommerce’s documentation includes CAPTCHA-based fraud-prevention guidance for PayPal payment endpoints. It can be an additional defense, not a guarantee against fraud, disputes, or chargebacks. Security rules should also be checked to ensure they do not block legitimate payment-status callbacks.
How PayPal compares with other gateways
There is no universal winner. PayPal’s distinct value is its wallet and PayPal-specific options; a card-first processor or a WooCommerce-integrated service may fit other operational priorities. Compare fees for the actual country and transaction mix, supported markets and currencies, wallets customers request, recurring billing, dispute processes, reporting, account risk, and the control needed over checkout.
- WooPayments: WooPayments is integrated into the WooCommerce ecosystem and may suit a merchant prioritizing administration within WooCommerce. It does not automatically replace demand from shoppers who specifically want PayPal.
- Stripe: Stripe’s WooCommerce payments information and the official WooCommerce Stripe extension are relevant for merchants evaluating card processing, wallets, payment methods, and developer flexibility. Stripe does not replace PayPal-wallet demand unless PayPal is also offered.
- A second gateway: Running PayPal alongside another gateway can provide a fallback for account-review interruptions, regional restrictions, or different payment preferences. It adds configuration and reconciliation work, so test both paths and avoid confusing duplicate choices.
Is PayPal for WooCommerce a fit?
It is more likely to fit when customers expect PayPal or Venmo, the merchant wants PayPal-specific methods alongside cards, the target markets are supported, and the store can accept the applicable fees and maintain a tested third-party checkout. Compare alternatives or use a second gateway if margins are sensitive to wallet or Pay Later fees, recurring billing is specialized, PayPal’s regional or industry coverage is limited, account interruptions would be costly, or the store needs more customized card processing.
Before making it the only way customers can pay, confirm eligibility for the methods you intend to advertise, test the store’s real products and checkout flows, and consider whether a backup gateway is necessary for business continuity.
