OTC Markets Group is a U.S. market operator and trading-infrastructure provider, not a retail brokerage. It operates markets where securities are quoted and provides systems used by broker-dealers; investors access OTC securities through a U.S. broker, whose support and restrictions vary by security.
What OTC Markets Group does
OTC Markets Group says it operates markets for more than 12,000 U.S. and global securities. Its markets organize securities into tiers with different issuer-disclosure expectations and eligibility requirements. The company also provides OTC Link alternative trading system (ATS) infrastructure that broker-dealers use to quote and trade securities. OTC Markets Group’s market overview and OTC Link description explain these roles.
The distinction matters: a market operator is not the same as an exchange-listed company, and neither is the same as the brokerage where an investor holds an account. OTC Markets says securities are quoted in U.S. dollars during U.S. trading hours and that investors trade them through a U.S. broker. Its description identifies OTC Link ATS, OTC Link ECN, OTC Link NQB, OTC Overnight, and MOON ATS as SEC-regulated ATSs operated by OTC Link LLC, which it describes as a FINRA- and SEC-registered broker-dealer and SIPC member. This does not mean OTC Markets Group is the investor’s broker or that every broker offers every OTC security.
How OTC trading works for an investor
- Find the security and its current market tier. Check the issuer’s available disclosures and market information; the tier can help describe disclosure status, but it does not establish that the investment is safe or suitable.
- Check directly with your broker. Confirm that the firm currently supports the specific security and ask about account eligibility, order types, fees, and any restrictions on thinly traded or otherwise restricted securities. Support can vary by broker and by security.
- Review the order and trading conditions. OTC securities may not have the same disclosure or trading access as one another. Consider the information available about the issuer and the practical limits your broker identifies before deciding whether to place an order.
The available facts do not establish current terms for any particular retail brokerage, so there is no reliable universal answer to whether a given broker will let you buy a particular OTC security. Verify availability and account rules with the firm.

How OTC market tiers differ
OTC Markets groups securities according to the quality and timeliness of issuer disclosure, along with market-specific requirements. These labels describe market standards; they are not investment ratings.
| Market | What the operator says | What investors should take from it |
|---|---|---|
| OTCQX | OTC Markets calls it its “Best Market.” OTC Markets market overview. | Do not assume every OTC security meets the same standards; assess the issuer’s disclosures and circumstances. |
| OTCQB | The Venture Market serves entrepreneurial and development-stage U.S. and international companies. Eligibility requirements listed by OTC Markets include audited annual financials, a bid-price test, market-maker priced quotes, shareholder and public-float thresholds, and annual verification. | OTCID | Launched July 1, 2025, OTCID is the Basic Market. OTC Markets says companies provide baseline ongoing disclosure and management certification and must meet its rules, including current disclosure and a verified company profile. | Pink Limited | OTC Markets says these securities can have limited to no issuer involvement and limited disclosure or financial information. Broker-dealers may impose additional restrictions. The operator says a security may move to the Expert Market if disclosure remains unavailable after the applicable grace period; its page describes no public broker-dealer quotations there. OTCID replaced Pink Current
OTC Markets states that OTCID launched on July 1, 2025, and Pink Current ceased to exist. Companies previously in Pink Current moved to OTCID or Pink Limited depending on whether they met the relevant eligibility requirements. Use the current labels when checking a security, and refer to OTC Markets’ current rules for details because requirements may change.

What a market tier does—and does not—tell you
- It can indicate disclosure expectations. The tiers reflect different standards and requirements, but actual information available about an issuer still needs to be reviewed.
- It is not a guarantee of investment quality. A market label alone does not prove an issuer is financially sound, that a security is liquid, or that it is appropriate for a particular investor.
- It does not guarantee broker access. Brokers set their own support, account, order, and security restrictions. Check the specific firm and security rather than assuming all OTC trading works alike.
