It uses several protocol features to obscure the sender, recipient, and amount shown in a payment, but that does not make every part of a user’s activity anonymous. Wallet security, network connections, and information shared with other people can still affect privacy.
What is Monero?
Monero is a cryptocurrency whose protocol is built to limit the transaction information publicly visible on its blockchain. Its currency is called XMR. Unlike a system in which users must choose a separate mixing service to seek transaction privacy, Monero applies its privacy mechanisms as part of ordinary transactions.
Those mechanisms protect different parts of a payment. Ring signatures make it less clear which output was spent; stealth addresses make it harder to link a payment destination to a recipient’s public address; and Ring Confidential Transactions (RingCT) hide the amount. Taken together, they make transaction details less directly observable, rather than proving that a payment can never be analyzed.
How does Monero privacy work?
Ring signatures obscure which output was spent
A Monero transaction uses a ring signature associated with a group of possible outputs. An outside observer can see the group, but the signature is designed to make it harder to identify which output is the actual one being spent. The technical specification describes sender privacy as probabilistic: the mechanism creates ambiguity, not an absolute guarantee that attribution is impossible.

Stealth addresses make recipients harder to link
A recipient’s public address is not simply published as the destination in every payment. Monero uses one-time destinations so that payments are harder to link publicly to the recipient’s wallet address. This addresses on-chain linkability; it does not prevent a recipient or merchant from learning who you are through an account, delivery details, or other information you provide.
RingCT hides transaction amounts
RingCT conceals transaction amounts while allowing the network to validate that a transaction is correct. This protects the amount recorded in the transaction from being plainly visible to a blockchain observer.

Is Monero untraceable?
No cryptocurrency privacy design should be read as a promise that every transaction or user is impossible to trace. Monero’s technical documentation characterizes sender privacy as probabilistic, while describing recipient and amount privacy as strong. Those are distinct assurances: obscuring information on the ledger does not erase clues a person may disclose elsewhere or guarantee that every network trace is hidden.

A compromised device could expose wallet information, and an identifiable network connection may reveal information independently of what the blockchain displays. Monero improves transaction-level privacy by design, but it is not a substitute for careful handling of identity, devices, and connections.
Is Monero a mixer?
No. Monero’s official FAQ describes its privacy process as automatic and non-custodial, rather than an opt-in service in which users send funds to a custodial mixer. Its privacy mechanisms are part of how the cryptocurrency’s transactions work.

What are the risks of using a remote node?
Ledger privacy and network privacy are separate. A remote node can see the IP address connecting to it, according to Monero’s technical documentation; using one does not, by default, protect your IP address from that node. The documentation also says Dandelion++ reduces the traceability of transaction propagation over public networks, but does not protect against an internet service provider, VPN provider, or the first remote node in the protocol.
Using a remote node may reduce the need to run and maintain your own node, but it involves trusting a third party with the connection information visible to that node. The privacy protections for transaction details should not be mistaken for concealment of your IP address from every party involved in transmitting a transaction.

What should you protect when using Monero?
Transaction privacy cannot compensate for basic wallet and account-security failures. Monero’s official FAQ warns that identity disclosure, compromised devices, weak wallet passwords, and unsafe recovery-seed backups can undermine security.
- Protect your device: A device that exposes wallet secrets can defeat protections provided by the protocol.
- Use a strong wallet password: A weak password can put wallet access at risk.
- Handle the recovery seed carefully: Store it securely and avoid exposing it to others or unsafe systems.
- Consider what you disclose: A merchant or other counterparty may connect a payment to your identity through information outside the blockchain.
- Understand your node connection: A remote node can see the IP address that connects to it.

How is Monero issued and divided?
Monero’s design includes ongoing issuance known as tail emission. The Monero Project FAQ states that tail emission began on 2022-06-09 and provides 0.6 XMR per block. This is a protocol detail, not a statement about the market value of XMR or the amount a user will receive. Check the official FAQ for the current protocol description.
Monero is divisible to 12 decimal places. Its smallest unit, the piconero, equals 0.000000000001 XMR, according to Monero Docs’ technical specification.
