MCX, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited, is an Indian exchange where participants trade standardized commodity-derivative contracts—not a shop where retail customers ordinarily buy commodities directly. MCX provides the trading venue; its wholly owned subsidiary, MCX Clearing Corporation Limited (MCXCCL), clears and settles trades and acts as the central counterparty. Whether a contract involves physical delivery depends on its terms.
What MCX is—and what it is not
MCX says it began operations in November 2003 and operates under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) framework. Its role is to facilitate trading in commodity derivatives through an exchange platform. In MCX’s words, it provides “a platform for price discovery and risk management.” MCX’s About Us page describes the exchange and its role.
A commodity derivative is a contract whose value is linked to an underlying commodity or, in some cases, an index based on commodity contracts. Trading one is not the same as purchasing gold, oil or another commodity from a retailer. MCX’s listed market spans bullion, industrial metals, energy and agricultural commodities, as well as indices constituted from those contracts; this is a broad description, not a complete, live list of available contracts.
How a commodity-exchange trade works
The outline below is a high-level description. Exact order, margin, expiry and settlement rules depend on the contract and current exchange rules.

- Choose a permitted contract. A participant selects a commodity derivative and checks its current specifications, including the underlying, expiry and settlement terms.
- Submit an order through a member or broker. Participants access the exchange through an exchange member. This is a trade in a contract, not a direct retail purchase of the underlying commodity.
- The trade takes place on MCX’s platform. MCX provides the venue for trading commodity derivatives.
- MCXCCL clears and settles the trade. MCXCCL manages collateral and risk, clears and settles exchange trades, and serves as central counterparty. These are market-infrastructure functions, not protection from price losses.
- The position is closed or handled under the contract’s settlement procedure. Depending on the contract and the participant’s position, obligations may be settled financially or follow an applicable delivery process. Do not assume every position ends in delivery or that every contract is cash settled.

Futures, options and the possibility of delivery
Futures and options are different contracts
MCX offers commodity derivatives, including futures and options, and describes itself as the first Indian exchange to introduce commodity options. An option on a commodity future is distinct from a futures contract: the option has its own payoff structure, expiry and exercise rules. Those rules can change or depend on when an option was launched. For example, MCX’s FAQ describes an expiry procedure for options launched from 1 February 2022 onward, including automatic exercise of in-the-money options unless a contrary instruction is given; out-of-the-money options expire worthless. This is not a trading instruction—consult the current MCX FAQ and applicable contract terms before acting.

Delivery depends on the contract
Some commodity contracts have a delivery procedure, but delivery is not a universal outcome for all MCX trades. MCX says delivery takes place at approved warehouses and designated delivery centres specified in the relevant commodity contract specifications. Its delivery department follows a predefined schedule. Before holding a position toward expiry, a participant needs to check the contract’s delivery type, quality requirements, location, timeline and obligations. MCX provides delivery information on its Delivery page and in the FAQ.
A warehouse, in this context, is part of the exchange’s delivery infrastructure; it is not a retail shop. The relevant contract documents determine which approved warehouse or delivery centre applies and what procedures participants must follow.

What MCXCCL does—and what it does not guarantee
MCXCCL is MCX’s wholly owned clearing corporation. It handles collateral and risk management, clears and settles trades, and acts as central counterparty. In practical terms, those functions support the orderly processing of obligations between market participants. They do not eliminate the possibility of losses when prices move against a position, nor do they make derivatives risk-free.
What to compare before looking at a specific contract
There is no single set of terms that applies to every commodity derivative. For any contract under consideration, verify the current official specifications for:

- the underlying commodity or index;
- contract size and quotation unit;
- expiry date and applicable settlement method;
- delivery terms, including quality, location and schedule where relevant;
- liquidity, margin requirements and price limits.
These details can differ by contract and may change. Current margin values, lot sizes, trading hours, fees, tax treatment and eligibility requirements are not set out here; check dated official information and your broker’s applicable disclosures rather than relying on an undated summary.

For structured study, MCX’s MCX Certified Commodity Professional (MCCP) program covers commodity-market modalities, regulation, risk management, exchange operations, clearing, settlement and delivery. MCX states that the certificate is valid for five years from issue. That course is an educational option, not a prerequisite established here for trading.
