The burger behind the “almost twice the size of a Big Mac” headline is McDonald’s Big Arch. It has two quarter-pound patties, but the headline’s size comparison comes from approximate weights reported by a 2024 article—not an official McDonald’s whole-sandwich specification. McDonald’s announcements describe the burger’s ingredients and patty weight, not a verified weight ratio against a Big Mac.
What comes on the Big Arch?
The ingredients depend on the market and the date. McDonald’s Canada announced the Big Arch for participating restaurants beginning August 27, 2024, with two quarter-pound 100% Canadian beef patties, three slices of white processed cheese, crispy and slivered onions, pickles, lettuce, and Big Arch sauce. The quarter-pound figure is the weight of each patty before cooking. McDonald’s Canada’s launch announcement gives that market’s description.
For its U.S. launch beginning March 3, 2026, McDonald’s described two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of melted white cheddar, crispy and slivered onions, fresh lettuce, pickles, toasted sesame-and-poppy-seed buns, and Big Arch sauce. See the U.S. menu announcement for that version. Ingredients and descriptions should not be assumed to match across countries.
Is the Big Arch really almost twice the size of a Big Mac?
That wording is an approximate comparison from the September 4, 2024 Allrecipes article republished by AOL, which compared estimated whole-sandwich weights. It is not a ratio stated by McDonald’s. The official announcements reviewed specify the Big Arch’s patty count and pre-cooking patty weight, but do not provide comparable whole-burger weights for the Big Arch and Big Mac. The AOL article is the source of the “almost twice” framing.

Two quarter-pound patties tell you the patties’ combined stated weight before cooking; they do not establish the weight of the assembled sandwich or prove a particular size ratio against a Big Mac. Treat “almost twice” as that article’s approximate comparison, not an official McDonald’s specification.
Where and when has McDonald’s offered it?
Availability is market-specific. McDonald’s Canada announced a rollout at participating Canadian restaurants starting August 27, 2024. In the U.S., McDonald’s announced a limited-time launch at participating restaurants nationwide beginning March 3, 2026, but did not state an end date. That announcement does not establish whether a restaurant still offers the burger on October 4, 2026; check the local McDonald’s menu or participating restaurant for current availability and price.

McDonald’s 2025 shareholder letter says the Big Arch earned a permanent place on the U.K. menu after limited-time offers across multiple markets. That statement applies to the U.K.; it does not mean the burger is permanent in Canada, the U.S., or every other market. The U.S. launch announcement and 2025 shareholder letter describe those separate market contexts.

The clearest documented difference is the build: the Big Arch is described with two quarter-pound patties and three cheese slices, plus crispy and slivered onions and Big Arch sauce. The 2026 U.S. description also specifies white cheddar and a sesame-and-poppy-seed bun. Those details make it a distinct menu item, but the available official descriptions do not support a precise whole-sandwich weight comparison with a Big Mac.

McDonald’s Canada framed the launch around customer interest in “a bigger, burger on our menu.” In the company’s August 2024 announcement, Canada Chief Marketing Officer Alyssa Buetikofer said: “We have heard our guests loud and clear and understand they are looking for a bigger, burger on our menu, and we are excited to bring this new global menu item to Canadians.” The Canadian announcement provides the quote and launch context.
