There is no single best broker for options trading. The right choice depends on the strategies your account is permitted to use, the tools and order workflow you need, and your likely all-in costs—not just the advertised commission. For active options features and pricing, StockBrokers.com’s 2026 review favors tastytrade; for research and accessibility, Fidelity; and for advanced analytics and global derivatives access, Interactive Brokers (IBKR). Those are distinct editorial picks, not a universal ranking or a guarantee of execution quality.
Which brokers stand out for options trading?
StockBrokers.com’s 2026 review says its researchers tested platforms on desktop, web, and mobile and assessed more than 30 variables, including options chains, Greeks, analysis tools, and multi-leg execution. Its choices reflect different trader profiles:
| Broker | What the 2026 review highlights | Most relevant if you prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| tastytrade | Active-options features and pricing | A workflow geared toward frequent options activity |
| Fidelity | Research and accessibility | Research resources and an approachable platform |
| Interactive Brokers | Advanced analytics and global derivatives access | More advanced analysis or access to derivatives markets beyond a basic domestic options workflow |
Kiplinger’s 2026 survey of nine firms uses both objective and subjective criteria and identifies Robinhood and Firstrade for options pricing. That is a narrower pricing judgment, not a finding that either is the best overall platform. Schwab is another option to compare if its options tools suit your workflow: its listed features include single- and multi-leg orders, options probabilities and statistics, screeners, simulated trading, and portfolio risk analysis. Confirm current features and availability for your account and location.
Check strategy approval before comparing platforms
First identify what you actually expect to trade: long calls or puts, spreads, or another strategy. Brokers can restrict which strategies an account may use, and approval is account-specific. Schwab, for example, requires customers to apply for options approval and directs them to check which strategies their account level permits. A platform’s tools do not mean your account is approved for every strategy it supports.

- Confirm the broker offers the strategy you want.
- Check the approval process and the permissions available to your particular account.
- Verify any location or account-type restrictions directly with the broker.
Compare the whole cost of a typical trade
A zero listed contract commission is not the same as zero total cost. Depending on the broker, product, venue, account, and region, a transaction may also involve exchange, regulatory, clearing, or other pass-through charges. Some brokers have volume-based pricing or separate fees for particular options, including index options. Check each broker’s current options-specific fee schedule before deciding.
| Pricing comparison | What the source reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Robinhood and Firstrade | Kiplinger’s 2026 survey described their options contracts as fee-free in its pricing comparison. | This refers to the survey’s contract-pricing comparison; it does not establish that every trade has no fees. |
| Other firms in Kiplinger’s survey | Kiplinger reported $0.65 per contract at the other surveyed firms in its 2026 comparison. | This is a survey snapshot for the firms covered, not a current quote or an all-in cost for every order. |
To estimate your own cost, use a trade you might realistically place and include the number of contracts and legs, whether you open and later close the position, and any applicable exchange, regulatory, subscription, exercise, or assignment charges. Robinhood’s fee schedule lists separate options regulatory and audit-trail charges and distinguishes index-option charges; IBKR describes volume-based options commissions and additional fees. Check the current terms at the broker rather than assuming a survey figure is your final bill.

Match the tools to your experience and workflow
Look beyond the broker’s headline features and consider how you will use them. A beginner may value clear explanations, education, and an order ticket that is easy to understand. Someone placing multi-leg orders more often may care more about leg-by-leg controls, risk analysis, order management, and the cost of opening and closing each leg.
- Options chain and Greeks: Check whether the chain presents the contract information and Greeks you need to compare choices.
- Risk and probability tools: Compare the assumptions and outputs of probability, payoff, and portfolio-risk features. Treat them as analytical aids, not guarantees.
- Multi-leg orders: Review how the platform builds and displays a spread, handles order changes, and shows the combined position.
- Practice and education: If you are learning, look for simulated trading and clear educational material. Practice does not remove the risks of live trading.
- Devices and support: Assess desktop, web, and mobile workflows, plus the customer support you expect to need.
Account for your broader financial needs
An options platform may not be the best fit for the rest of your finances. Consider your other investments, cash needs, account and tax requirements, support preferences, and whether keeping accounts together matters to you. A broker that stands out for options analytics or pricing may not be your preferred choice for every other account need.

Understand the risks before placing an options trade
Options can involve substantial risk, and approval to trade is not a personalized recommendation that a strategy is appropriate for you. Read FINRA’s investor education on options and the Options Clearing Corporation’s Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options disclosure document before trading. Do not treat low fees, platform analytics, or a simulated-trading feature as evidence that a strategy will be profitable.
