What Is Known About Joel Osteen’s Wealth and Spending?

The available reporting documents Osteen’s statements about book income, a historical assessment of his Houston home, and Lakewood Church finances—but not a verified current net worth or personal luxury-spending list.

There is no reliable, current figure in the reviewed sources for Joel Osteen’s personal net worth, and they do not verify a list of extravagant personal purchases. What is documented is narrower: Osteen has said books and media are major sources of his income and that he takes no salary from Lakewood Church; a newspaper reported historical figures for his Houston home; and Lakewood’s church finances have been reported separately. Those categories should not be treated as one personal fortune or spending account.

Is Joel Osteen’s net worth known?

The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable current net-worth figure for Osteen. A net-worth estimate would require a complete, current accounting of assets and liabilities. Statements about income, a historical property assessment, and Lakewood Church’s budget do not provide that accounting. Online estimates that lack a verifiable basis should not be presented as audited facts.

What has Osteen said about his personal income?

In a 2009 Forbes interview, Osteen said he did not take a salary from Lakewood and that books had brought him more money than he could imagine. In a 2008 Larry King interview, he said he and his wife, Victoria, took no salary and made money mainly from books. These are Osteen’s descriptions of his income, not an independent verification of his total earnings or net worth.

Books are the clearest documented connection between his work and personal income. Osteen cited book sales as a source of wealth, and CBS identifies Your Best Life Now as his first book. That connection does not establish how much he earned from any particular title or what he is worth today.

What is known about Osteen’s home?

The Houston Chronicle reported that Osteen’s River Oaks residence in Houston was 17,300 square feet and had a $12 million assessed value. The Chronicle, drawing on figures from the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office, also reported $247,000 in property taxes paid in 2017.

Those are historical property figures, not a current market valuation or a record of what Osteen paid to buy the home. An assessed value is a tax-related valuation and should not be substituted for a sale price or a present-day appraisal.

How much money did Lakewood Church receive and spend?

Lakewood’s finances belong to the church, not to Osteen personally. The Houston Chronicle reported the following figures from Lakewood financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2017:

Measure Reported amount What it represents
Operating expenses $90 million Lakewood Church expenses for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017
Contributions $83 million Contributions collected in person, online, and by mail during that fiscal year
Ministry product sales $2.8 million Sales including Osteen books, Bibles, and calendars during that fiscal year

In a CBS News interview published in 2016, Osteen broadly described about $30 million going to the television effort and said that if the church brought in about $90 million, it would spend about $90 million. That was his description of Lakewood’s funds, not a personal spending breakdown. The Houston Chronicle also reported that Lakewood did not routinely make its financial statements public and provided only part of a recent statement when asked.

Does Osteen own a private jet, yacht, or fleet of luxury cars?

In an April 8, 2026 appearance on the IMPAULSIVE podcast, as reported by ChurchLeaders, Osteen said, “I don’t have one jet,” and said he had never owned a jet, yacht, or fleet of cars. Those are his statements in an interview; the report is not an independently audited inventory of his assets. The reviewed sources therefore do not substantiate the popular claim that he owns those luxury items, nor do they establish a complete list of what he does own.

How to read claims about Osteen’s wealth

  • Personal income: Osteen’s comments about book income and not taking a church salary are attributed statements, not a full financial disclosure.
  • Property: The reported home value is a historical assessed value, and the property-tax figure is for 2017; neither establishes current market value or purchase cost.
  • Church finances: Contributions, product sales, television spending, and operating expenses are Lakewood figures. They are not Osteen’s personal earnings or spending.
  • Luxury-asset claims: Treat reports of jets, yachts, and car collections cautiously; the available interview denial is not a comprehensive independent asset audit.
