Its totals generally flow to Schedule D, which calculates the overall capital gain or loss. For transactions that qualify under the applicable Schedule D instructions, direct reporting on Schedule D may be allowed instead.
What Form 8949 is used for
The IRS describes Form 8949 as the form for reporting sales and exchanges of capital assets. It also helps reconcile information reported on Forms 1099-B, 1099-DA, or 1099-S, or substitute statements, with the amounts on a tax return. The form is filed with Schedule D for the return being filed, and the instructions generally direct taxpayers to complete Form 8949 before the relevant Schedule D lines. Assets covered can include stocks, bonds, digital assets, and certain real estate. Some transactions have different reporting routes or special rules; for example, a main-home sale or business-property transaction may require other forms or instructions. Form 8949 is therefore not a catch-all for every payment, asset transfer, or tax event.
How Form 8949 and Schedule D work together
Form 8949 provides transaction-level detail when required, including relevant proceeds, basis, and adjustments. Schedule D brings together the resulting gains and losses and calculates the overall amount for the return. Schedule D also covers certain transactions that do not have to be entered on Form 8949.

Whether it qualifies for direct reporting depends on the applicable Schedule D instructions. A tax form from a broker does not, by itself, establish that the transaction can be copied as-is or omitted from Form 8949. IRS Schedule D instructions (2025)
Choose the short-term or long-term part
The 2025 Form 8949 separates transactions by holding period. In general, an asset held for one year or less is short-term and goes in Part I; one held for more than one year is long-term and goes in Part II. Holding-period rules have exceptions, including special rules for certain partnership interests. Inherited property is generally treated as long-term. For the general counting method, the IRS says to start with the day after the property is received and include the date it is disposed of.

What information Form 8949 asks for
For each reportable transaction, the form generally calls for a property description, acquisition and disposition dates, proceeds, basis, and—when applicable—an adjustment code and amount. For a transaction reported on Form 1099-B, 1099-DA, or 1099-S, the reported proceeds generally go in the proceeds column. Basis must be handled according to the information available and whether it is correct.

When to get transaction-specific guidance
Form 8949 does not determine specialized tax treatment by itself. Basis questions, wash sales, home sales, inherited assets, business property, partnership interests, and other exceptions can change how a transaction is reported. Consult the instructions for the relevant tax year and transaction type, or a qualified tax professional, if the reporting route or adjustment is unclear.
The IRS says its Form 8949 software can import trades from many brokerage firms, and accounting software may help track adjusted basis. These are optional workflow aids, not requirements; taxpayers remain responsible for reporting accurate information.
