HUB International is an insurance brokerage and financial services firm—not an insurance carrier, based on the company’s published description. It works with businesses and individuals on insurance, risk management, employee benefits, retirement, and wealth services. HUB says it was formed in 1998 when 11 Canadian brokerages came together, and it is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
What services does HUB International provide?
HUB’s service categories cover business needs as well as personal coverage and financial services. Its published offerings include:
- Commercial insurance and risk: commercial lines, risk management and analytics, specialty and global insurance, and safety and loss prevention.
- Employee benefits: benefits advice and administration, compliance, and global benefits services.
- Personal and private-client services: personal insurance and services for private clients.
- Retirement and wealth: retirement and wealth services.
These categories describe the range HUB says it offers; they do not establish that every service is available in every location or suitable for every client. HUB’s company overview and solutions pages provide its descriptions of the business.
Global benefits for multinational employers
In a May 2026 announcement, HUB said its expanded Global Benefits practice serves multinational employers with health and welfare, total rewards, actuarial and pension solutions, global mobility, emergency assistance, M&A consulting, and in-country solutions. HUB also described its HUB GlobalView platform as providing centralized visibility into benefits data, reporting, and governance across countries where an employer operates. These are company descriptions of the practice and platform, not independent assessments of their performance. HUB’s May 2026 announcement has further details.

How is HUB different from an insurance company?
An insurance carrier issues and underwrites policies. A brokerage such as HUB helps clients assess insurance needs and access coverage, alongside related advisory services. HUB describes itself as a brokerage and financial services firm; its company materials do not identify it as an insurer issuing policies. The distinction matters when evaluating who provides coverage and who is advising or arranging it: ask which carrier underwrites a proposed policy and what role HUB will have in placing or servicing it.
Who owns HUB International?
HUB describes itself as privately owned. Its investor-relations page says funds managed by Hellman & Friedman are its largest investor and that management retains a significant equity position. HUB is not described as publicly traded in these materials. The company says financial information on that page is restricted to eligible noteholders and securities analysts. HUB’s investor-relations page gives its ownership description.

When was HUB founded, and how large is it?
HUB says 11 Canadian brokerages came together to form the company in 1998. It describes itself as one of the world’s largest insurance brokers; that is the company’s characterization, not an independent ranking. HUB’s company overview provides its history and description.
On September 28, 2026, HUB announced a refreshed brand and reported that it had completed more than 600 acquisitions since its previous brand refresh in 2016. That is a company-reported acquisition count, not an independently verified total. The announcement framed the brand as representing HUB’s risk, insurance, employee benefits, private-client, retirement, and wealth-management capabilities. HUB’s September 2026 announcement describes the refresh.

What should you consider before choosing HUB?
Start with the need you want help with—business insurance, personal coverage, employee benefits, retirement, or wealth advice—then evaluate whether the adviser’s expertise and service model fit that need. Useful questions include:
- Does the team have relevant experience in your industry, location, or financial situation?
- What advice, placement, administration, and ongoing service are included?
- Which insurance carriers or other providers may be involved, and who is responsible for each part?
- How will the adviser support you as your needs or circumstances change?
HUB’s published materials establish that it offers these service categories, but they do not provide independent pricing, performance, or competitor-comparison data. Request details for the specific service and location you are considering, and compare proposals on scope and ongoing support as well as cost.
