The result is a compact memory stack with a very wide connection to an AI accelerator, so it can move data at high speed. Data centers use it because AI processors need a steady supply of model data and intermediate results; HBM’s capacity and bandwidth help determine how much data can stay close to the processor and how quickly it can be supplied.
What HBM is—and how it differs from regular DRAM
HBM is not a different name for all memory used in AI systems. It is specialized 3D-stacked synchronous DRAM (SDRAM). Instead of placing memory chips in a conventional flat arrangement, manufacturers stack thin DRAM dies and connect them vertically with TSVs and microbumps. Those connections provide a wide interface for transferring data in a compact footprint. The precision assembly involved makes HBM manufacturing more demanding than conventional memory packaging. Micron describes HBM as stacked DRAM connected through TSVs and microbumps; its HBM overview explains the technology and use cases.
HBM sits in a broader memory hierarchy alongside DDR and LPDDR system memory and SSD storage. Its role is to provide fast, nearby memory for demanding compute, rather than to replace every other type of memory or storage in a data center.
Capacity and bandwidth solve different problems
Capacity is how much data a memory stack can hold. Bandwidth is how quickly data can move between memory and processor, usually expressed as a rate such as terabytes per second. More capacity does not automatically mean more bandwidth, or vice versa. A useful analogy is a work area: capacity is its size, while bandwidth is the rate at which materials can pass through it.

For scale, Micron’s HBM4 FAQ describes a 36GB HBM4 12-high stack with bandwidth above 2.8 TB/s. Those figures refer to that specific configuration, not to every HBM product. Micron’s HBM4 product information provides the vendor’s configuration and specification details.
Why AI accelerators need so much HBM
AI accelerators perform large numbers of calculations, but those calculations also depend on a continuous flow of data: model parameters, activations, and intermediate state. If memory cannot supply data quickly enough, the processor’s compute capability alone does not determine how much work the system can complete. High bandwidth helps keep the accelerator supplied; capacity affects how much data can remain close to it rather than requiring access elsewhere.

As models, context lengths, and concurrent workloads grow, both constraints matter. Micron EVP Sumit Sadana said in a June 1, 2026 company announcement that “System performance is now driven by memory bandwidth and memory capacity, more than ever before.” That is an executive’s characterization, not an independent measurement that applies identically to every system. The same announcement quoted Sadana saying AI context lengths were increasing by 30 times per year; this is an attributed company statement, not an independently verified universal growth rate. Micron’s June 1, 2026 announcement gives the statements and context.
HBM is one layer of a data center’s memory hierarchy
AI data centers use multiple kinds of memory and storage because each serves a different role. In Micron’s description, HBM supports high-speed model execution and hot key-value cache; LPDDR and DDR provide system memory for orchestration and long-context expansion; SSDs support persistent cache or data-lake uses. HBM’s speed and proximity make it valuable, but it does not make system memory or storage unnecessary. Micron’s announcement outlines this division of roles.

What current HBM announcements say
Generation names and product status matter when comparing HBM claims. The figures below are vendor-reported specifications or announcements, not results from a common independent benchmark. “Samples,” “volume shipment,” and “high-volume production” describe different stages and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Vendor and product | Reported details | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SK hynix HBM4 | 2,048 I/Os; the company claims 2.54 times the bandwidth of its previous generation and more than 40% improved power efficiency. | SK hynix reported these figures on March 5, 2026. Its report also said 12-layer HBM3E was being used in AI data-center GPU modules for global customers. SK hynix’s MWC 2026 report. |
| Micron HBM4 36GB 12H | More than 2.8 TB/s bandwidth; Micron reports more than 20% better power efficiency than its HBM3E. | Micron said on March 16, 2026 that the product was in high-volume production, designed for NVIDIA Vera Rubin, and had begun volume shipment in Q1 2026. These are Micron’s claims for this configuration. Micron’s HBM4 announcement. |
| Micron HBM4 48GB 16H | 48GB capacity in a 16-high stack; bandwidth and comparative efficiency figures not stated in the cited announcement. | Micron said it had shipped samples to customers on March 16, 2026; this is sample status, not a volume-shipment claim. Micron’s HBM4 announcement. |
| SK hynix HBM4E 12-layer | Up to 16 Gbps per pin; the company reports more than 20% improved power efficiency versus prior models. | SK hynix said on June 18, 2026 that it had shipped samples to major customers. The figures are company-reported and the announcement describes a sample-stage product. SK hynix’s HBM4E announcement. |
When evaluating a specification, check the generation, stack height and capacity, whether bandwidth is quoted per stack, the power-efficiency comparison basis, platform compatibility, and production or shipment status. Vendor claims are not automatically comparable across manufacturers; these announcements do not establish a single independent head-to-head test.

What the market forecasts do—and do not—show
In its January 5, 2026 outlook, SK hynix attributed to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) a forecast of approximately $975 billion for the global semiconductor market in 2026, more than 25% year-over-year growth, with memory growth of 30%. These were projections, not final 2026 results. SK hynix separately reported that some market research firms and investment banks estimated the 2026 memory market could exceed $440 billion; that estimate was not attributed to WSTS. SK hynix’s 2026 market outlook distinguishes the forecasts and attributions.
Market growth can help explain attention to memory supply, but it does not establish how much HBM any particular data center needs. Requirements depend on the accelerator, workload, system design, and memory configuration.

Is HBM something consumers can buy or upgrade?
HBM is generally a component integrated into specialized accelerator and platform designs, not a drop-in replacement for a consumer PC’s DDR memory. The cited announcements discuss supplier products, customer sampling, production, and compatibility with accelerator platforms; they do not establish a reader-facing HBM upgrade or replacement product. For a personal computer, memory compatibility depends on the specific system and its supported memory type.
