GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that began in 2012 at New York City’s 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact. Its annual day takes place on the Tuesday after U.S. Thanksgiving, but participation is not limited to that date—or to donating money. People can give time, skills, goods, advocacy, or help to neighbors.
What is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday describes itself as “a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.” In practical terms, it is both a shared annual moment for giving and a year-round network of people, communities, partners, and leaders encouraging acts of generosity.
That definition is broader than a fundraising appeal. Giving can mean a financial contribution, but it can also mean volunteering, speaking up for a cause, sharing a skill, donating goods or supplies, or helping someone nearby. The movement’s U.S. page also highlights helping others and sharing what you have.
How GivingTuesday got started
GivingTuesday’s own account says it was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day encouraging people to do good. It was born and incubated at the 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. The idea grew into a global movement, and GivingTuesday now describes itself as an independent nonprofit organized through a distributed network.

When is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday falls each year on the Tuesday after U.S. Thanksgiving, so its calendar date changes. For example, the official FAQ listed December 2 as the 2025 date; that date applies to 2025, not to every year. Check the official FAQ for the date of a particular year.

How people take part
There is no single required way to participate. A useful choice is one that fits what you can offer, supports a cause or community you care about, and—if you want—can continue after the annual day.
- Money: Make a financial contribution to a nonprofit or cause you have chosen.
- Time: Volunteer or offer practical help to a community group or neighbor.
- Skills: Share professional or personal skills with an organization or individual who can use them.
- Goods: Give useful items or extra supplies where there is a real need.
- Advocacy: Raise awareness, support a campaign, or speak up for an issue.
These are examples, not a checklist. GivingTuesday’s U.S. overview and FAQ describe forms of participation that include donations, advocacy, goods, helping neighbors, and other acts of generosity.

- 【Raffle Ticket Box with 4 x 0.4-Inch Slot】 The top slot is precision-sized for raffle tickets, voting slips, and paper notes, so entries drop in cleanly without jamming at school raffles and contests. Fold or trim oversized slips first and the line keeps moving. Check your insert sizes before the event
- 【Shatter-Resistant Acrylic, See-Through Body】 Crystal-clear acrylic walls keep every bill and ticket in plain view, so donors watch their gift drop in and land, and you can check the collection level at a glance without opening the lid. The shatter-resistant body survives busy events, stays light enough to move between tables, and wipes clean for reuse
- 【4 x 6-Inch Sign Holder for Any Event】 The built-in holder fits standard 4 x 6-inch paper or cards. Swap the insert to relabel the box as a tip jar, tip box, suggestion box, ballot box, raffle box, or a go-to among donation boxes for fundraising events and giveaways. No tools needed; display cards are not included
- 【Donation Box with Lock and 2 Keys】 The keyed lock keeps collected cash and tickets secure while you step away from the table or between pickups. Two keys are included, one for the organizer and one spare. Seat the lid fully before locking
- 【Compact 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0-Inch Countertop Size】 Measuring 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0 inches, it fits bake sales, office front desks, concession stands, reception counters, and service stations without crowding your display space, yet holds plenty for steady collections
What GivingTuesday’s reported figures show
GivingTuesday Data Commons’ 2026 impact page estimates that people in the United States raised $4.0 billion and that 38.1 million people took action in 2025. The page also reports that the amount raised increased 13.0% from 2024. These are figures published by GivingTuesday’s Data Commons, not independently audited totals presented here.
The same impact page lists 111 countries in the movement. That is a current page figure and may change; it should not be read as a count of countries with an official GivingTuesday leadership network.

Other official materials use different measures and reporting contexts. GivingTuesday’s 2025 key-messages document cites 36.1 million U.S. participants in 2024 and more than 2 million uses of #GivingTuesday. It also says 86% of people aware of GivingTuesday said it inspired them to be more generous; the document does not provide enough survey-method detail to interpret that percentage further. These figures should not be combined as if they measure the same population or use the same method.
