GIFT Nifty is a set of Nifty-linked derivative contracts traded on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gujarat. Nifty 50 is the benchmark equity index those contracts reference. In short, GIFT Nifty is tradable; Nifty 50 is an index level. GIFT Nifty can provide an overnight reference to Nifty-linked trading, but it does not guarantee how the Nifty 50 will open.
What is GIFT Nifty?
GIFT Nifty is the name for derivative contracts linked to the Nifty 50 and traded on NSE IX, the international exchange in GIFT City. It is not a second version of the Nifty 50 index. NSE describes Nifty 50 futures as contracts based on the Nifty 50 index, while its GIFT Nifty announcement describes the product as derivatives traded on NSE IX.
The distinction matters: a derivative contract has its own price and contract terms, while the Nifty 50 index represents the benchmark level of its underlying shares. NSE’s domestic product information also notes that lot size and other contract specifications can change, so check current exchange information before relying on a particular term.
How GIFT Nifty differs from Nifty 50
| Feature | GIFT Nifty | Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Nifty-linked derivative contracts | Benchmark equity index; NSE identifies it as the underlying for Nifty 50 futures |
| Where it is traded or observed | Contracts trade on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City | The index is a benchmark for the Indian domestic equity market, not itself a derivative contract |
| Trading window | At launch in 2023, NSE described access as “almost 21 hours”; current sessions should be checked with NSE IX | An index level, not a separate derivative trading session |
| How to interpret it | A reference to Nifty-linked derivatives trading, including outside the domestic cash-market window | The benchmark level of the underlying index |
NSE’s 2023 announcement described GIFT Nifty derivatives as dollar-denominated. That is a dated product announcement, not a substitute for checking current contract specifications, including currency, lot size, expiry, and settlement terms. NSE’s Nifty 50 futures page likewise provides contract details and cautions that permitted lot size may change.

Why it is called GIFT Nifty
The name reflects a change in venue and identity, not the creation of a new benchmark. NSE reported that Nifty derivatives previously traded on Singapore Exchange moved to NSE IX and were renamed GIFT Nifty. NSE’s milestones list the full-scale NSE IX–SGX GIFT Connect operations and GIFT Nifty identity launch in fiscal year 2023–2024.
Does GIFT Nifty predict the Nifty 50?
It can serve as an overnight indication: its price shows how Nifty-linked derivatives are trading at that moment, including when India’s domestic cash market is closed. NSE described the launch-era trading access as “almost 21 hours,” overlapping Asian, European, and US trading hours. That longer window supports price discovery across more of the global trading day, but it does not establish that GIFT Nifty reliably predicts the next Nifty 50 cash-market move.

Do not treat its direction or level as a promise about the next opening. Prices can change before the domestic market opens, and a futures contract is not the same observation as the spot index. The official sources cited here do not establish a forecast-accuracy rate.
How to compare GIFT Nifty and Nifty 50 prices
First identify what you are comparing. GIFT Nifty futures versus the Nifty 50 spot index is not the same comparison as GIFT Nifty futures versus domestic Nifty futures. Futures prices and an index level are different instruments, and any futures comparison depends on the specific contract and expiry.

- Record the instrument on each side: GIFT Nifty futures, domestic Nifty futures, or Nifty 50 spot index.
- For futures, note the contract expiry and the time of observation.
- Do not assume a fixed price gap or infer a guaranteed opening level from one quote.
Where to check trading hours and contract terms
Exact schedules and contract specifications can change. NSE IX’s 2024 FAQ stated market times of 06:30 to 02:45 Indian Standard Time; because that is a dated FAQ, verify the current NSE IX trading-hours page or latest exchange circular rather than treating those times as permanent. For domestic Nifty 50 futures terms, consult NSE’s current product specification.
