Gareth Bale does not have an official, audited net worth on public record. The figures in circulation come from rich-list and celebrity-finance publishers, and they disagree. The Plymouth Argyle story is also older than its headlines suggest: the takeover interest was reported in June 2025 and described as early-stage. The most recent reporting cited here, dated June 2026, does not establish that a Bale-linked group has bought Plymouth Argyle.
What is Gareth Bale’s net worth?
Two published estimates exist, and they should not be combined into one number.
| Source | Figure | Date | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBC Sport Wales explainer | £70 million | Published 4 July 2025 | Estimated wealth on the previous year’s Sunday Times Rich List. Bale did not appear in the 2025 edition. |
| Celebrity Net Worth | $145 million | Page updated 16 June 2026 | Commercial celebrity estimate. Not an official disclosure and not audited. |
| Official or audited figure | Not stated | Not stated | No official statement or audited personal balance sheet is cited in the reporting used here. |
Bale’s career record, as BBC reported on 16 June 2025, includes five Champions League titles and 41 goals in 111 Wales caps. Those achievements explain where the estimates come from, but they do not show what Bale holds today.
Why the two estimates cannot be compared directly
- Different currencies. The Sunday Times figure is in pounds sterling and the celebrity-site figure is in US dollars. Neither publisher converts the other’s number.
- Different methods. A rich list is an annual estimate published by a named newspaper. A celebrity website is a commercial page whose method is not described as audited.
- Different dates. The £70 million figure refers to the year before 2025. The $145 million figure was last updated in June 2026.
- No cash or income detail. Neither estimate shows how much of the wealth is liquid, invested in clubs or tied up in other assets.
What was reported about Plymouth Argyle in June 2025?
On 16 June 2025, BBC Sport and PA Media reported that Bale was connected with a US-based group interested in taking over Plymouth Argyle. BBC described the talks as early-stage. PA reported that the group had registered interest while the process was at a very early point. Plymouth declined to comment in PA’s report.

That reporting describes an expression of interest. It does not describe an offer, an agreement or a completed deal.

What did the June 2026 report add?
BBC Sport Wales reported on 23 June 2026 that Bale had joined a sports investment vehicle and that the vehicle had contacted multiple clubs. The report referred to earlier links between Bale and both Plymouth and Cardiff. It did not say that Plymouth had been acquired, so the update describes Bale’s wider investment activity rather than a Plymouth closing.

How is Plymouth Argyle funding its future?
The club’s 2024 accounts
Plymouth Argyle’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024 said the club would need additional external investment to fulfil its mission and that it was seeking appropriate partners. The same accounts report a net gain on player registration transactions of £400,000. That is a club finance figure and has no bearing on Bale’s personal wealth.
The April 2026 investment search
BBC Sport reported in April 2026 that owner Simon Hallett remained patient in searching for investment after an earlier deal fell through. The same report covered loans from Hallett after the club’s relegation. Hallett told BBC Sport:

“I think we have to be patient, because we’re so careful about getting the right person in as an investor, or the right group in as investors.”
The quote describes the club’s caution about choosing investors. It does not name Bale or confirm talks with his group.

Where does the Plymouth story stand?
The most recent reporting cited in this article does not establish a completed Bale-led takeover of Plymouth Argyle, and no official announcement of a Bale-linked deal appears in it. The coverage available runs to 23 June 2026, so later developments may exist. A deal would be confirmed by:
- An official statement from Plymouth Argyle or its owner.
- A change to the shareholder list in the club’s Companies House filings.
- Reporting from BBC Sport or PA Media that describes a formal offer or completed transaction, rather than early-stage interest.
Until one of those appears, the accurate description is that Bale was reported in 2025 to be part of an early-stage group interested in Plymouth Argyle. His net worth figures are separate estimates and do not show that he can fund a club purchase.
