Facebook Marketplace is a place to find, buy, and sell physical items through Facebook. You can browse listings, contact sellers in Messenger, and create your own listings; for many local sales, the buyer and seller arrange payment and pickup or delivery themselves. Checkout and shipping features exist in some locations, but they are not available to every account or region.
What Facebook Marketplace is—and what it is not
Marketplace is Facebook’s consumer-to-consumer marketplace for discovering products offered by people in your community. Facebook provides the listing interface, search and location filters, messaging, ratings, and reporting tools. Depending on location and account eligibility, it may also provide checkout or delivery features. In an ordinary locally arranged sale, however, the buyer and seller handle the transaction directly; Facebook is not automatically a party to it. Meta describes Marketplace and explains its role in transactions.
Marketplace is intended primarily for consumers. Meta says businesses that list there may be blocked and their listings removed. Listings must comply with Meta’s Commerce Policies and Facebook’s Community Standards.
Who can use Marketplace
Eligibility depends on your age, location, and account. Meta generally requires users to be adults under the laws of their country—for example, at least 18 in the United States—and to live somewhere Marketplace is available. You need an active Facebook account and must use your main profile; Marketplace is not available through additional Facebook profiles. New or inactive accounts, and accounts that have violated Facebook policies, may have restricted access. See Meta’s Marketplace eligibility guidance and access troubleshooting page.

How to open Marketplace
On Facebook.com
- Open Facebook and go to your Feed.
- Click Marketplace in the left-hand menu. If it is not shown, click See more and look there; placement can vary with the interface.
In the Facebook app
- Open the Facebook app on your Android phone or iPhone in a supported country.
- Open Menu, then select Marketplace.
If you do not see Marketplace, check the access issues described below rather than assuming it has been removed from Facebook.
How to find and buy an item
Search for a specific product, browse categories, refine results with filters, or change the search location and distance to look near a chosen area. Meta’s search and discovery guide explains these options.
- Open Marketplace from your Feed and select a listing that interests you.
- Choose Message to write a custom note, or Send to send the preset “Is this available?” message. The labels may vary slightly by interface.
- Use Messenger to ask about condition, defects, price, and what is included. Agree explicitly on payment and whether the item will be picked up or delivered.
- For an in-person exchange, inspect the item before paying. Do not send a deposit until you have verified the item and the seller’s arrangement.
Meta advises keeping the conversation on Facebook or Messenger. A request to move quickly to WhatsApp, text, email, or another private channel is a scam warning sign: off-platform conversations are harder for Meta to detect and investigate. How to create a listing
Desktop listing steps
- From your Feed, click Marketplace in the left menu.
- Click Create new listing, then Item for sale.
- Click Add photos to upload photos; adding a video is optional.
- Enter the item details, then click Next and Publish.
If Next is disabled, a required field is likely incomplete. To offer an item for free, enter 0 as its price. Meta may enhance listing photos or video and may choose a cover image based on media quality and listing accuracy. See Meta’s listing instructions.

What to include
- A clear, accurate title and description of what is being sold.
- The asking price and honest condition, including defects or missing parts.
- Clear, high-quality photos that show the actual item.
- Whether pickup or delivery is offered and any relevant arrangement details.
Do not enter an artificially low price, such as £1, just to attract clicks; Meta says misleading prices violate its Commerce Policies and can confuse buyers. For electronics, remove personal information from the device, record its serial number or IMEI where applicable, and describe defects clearly. Meta’s electronics guidance covers these precautions.
What you cannot list
Meta’s examples of prohibited listings include non-physical offerings such as “in search of” or lost-and-found posts, jokes or news; services such as house cleaning; animals and animal products except listings from vetted pet-adoption matching services; healthcare and medical products, including thermometers and first-aid kits; and recalled products. This is not a complete list: check the items that cannot be listed page and the Commerce Policies. Applicable laws and regulations still apply.

A listing may be rejected if the product or listing violates policy. Facebook may show the notice “There are issues with your product”; follow the displayed steps or appeal if you believe the decision was mistaken.
How to manage a listing after publishing
Edit the details
Open your Marketplace listings and use Edit listing to change information such as the description or photos. The exact controls can vary by device and account. See Meta’s listing-editing instructions.

Choose the right status
Marketplace listing statuses include Available, Pending, Sold, and Shipped. Use Pending when you have agreed to sell but the transaction is not final: people who already messaged you are notified, and new buyers see the pending status. Mark it Sold when the transaction is complete. A sold listing is no longer visible to other Marketplace users, and people who messaged you receive a sold notification; Facebook may ask whether to archive the conversation. You can change a sold or pending item back to Available. Previously contacted buyers may be notified, and a conversation archived after a sale may be unarchived. Know the monthly listing limits
Meta’s current limits on new listings created per calendar month are:

These limits reset on the first day of each month. Existing listings remain active after the reset and do not count toward the new month’s limit. A listing counts when created, even if you later delete it. See Meta’s listing-limit details.

Locally arranged sales
In a local transaction, buyer and seller message one another and arrange payment and pickup or delivery themselves. Agree on the details in advance, and inspect an item before paying when practical. A payment made directly to the seller is not the same as a purchase completed through Facebook checkout.

Checkout and delivery, where available
Meta documents a checkout flow in some locations: open Marketplace, choose a product, click Buy now, enter payment, delivery, and contact information if requested, review the order, then click Place order. Availability depends on location and account. The current U.S. Help Center page for checkout and shipping says, “Shipping and checkout on Marketplace isn’t available in your location right now,” so U.S. users should not assume those buttons or Meta-supported shipping are available. Check Meta’s checkout-and-shipping availability page for your location.
Meta says eligible orders actually placed through Facebook checkout may appear in Order history, may qualify for Purchase Protection, and may offer support options. Those features do not automatically apply to a locally arranged cash sale or a transaction completed off Facebook. See Meta’s checkout and delivery guidance.
How to reduce risk when buying or selling
For an in-person exchange
- Meet in a public, well-lit place and avoid sharing your home address.
- Tell someone you trust when and where you are meeting, bring a charged phone, and message the other person when you are on the way.
- Avoid carrying an unnecessarily large amount of cash, and do not change the agreed meeting place without a good reason.
- Use Messenger’s Send Plan feature to share the meeting plan with a Facebook friend.
These are among Meta’s in-person meeting recommendations. Also review the other person’s profile and ratings, check for counterfeit or recalled goods, avoid gift-card payments, and report suspicious behavior. Meta’s responsible buying and selling advice has further guidance.
Understand what ratings can tell you
Marketplace ratings are not verified purchase records: Meta says it does not verify that a reviewer bought the item or used the service. Ratings can help provide context about an account, but they cannot prove a completed sale. Ratings can be submitted only in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, not on Facebook.com or Facebook Lite. Buyer ratings are visible only in the iPhone or Android app; seller ratings appear on the seller’s profile on most platforms, while Facebook Lite shows them on the product-details page. Ratings may become public after a user receives five or more eligible ratings. See Meta’s explanation of Marketplace ratings.
“Hide from friends” does not make a listing private
A hidden listing can still be seen by people logged out of Facebook or Messenger, people who find it through search engines, former Facebook friends, friends of friends, and people who receive a shared listing link in some circumstances. Listings posted in Facebook groups cannot be hidden from friends. Relisting an item automatically turns off Hide from friends, though you can enable it again. Do not use this setting to protect sensitive information or assume it keeps a sale secret. See Meta’s hidden-listing visibility details.
What to do if Marketplace disappears or a listing is rejected
- Switch to your main Facebook profile if you are using an additional profile.
- Check whether your age needs verification. If Facebook says you are underage but you are an adult, it may ask you to verify through the mobile app; options can include a video selfie or valid government ID, depending on region.
- Consider whether the account is new or inactive, or whether a policy issue may have restricted access.
- Review the listing against the Commerce Policies and Community Standards, and check whether Facebook displays “There are issues with your product.”
- If a listing was rejected incorrectly, submit an item appeal through the available Facebook flow. After access is restored, refresh Facebook.com or update the mobile app.
