ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. An ERP system is business software that connects information and processes across functions such as finance, procurement, human resources, manufacturing, sales, inventory, and supply chain. It is more than an accounting package: its purpose is to help different parts of an organization work with related data in a coordinated system.
What does ERP software do?
An ERP system brings together capabilities for different business functions, usually as connected modules. Each module supports a particular area, while shared data can help teams see how their work relates. For instance, a purchasing or inventory transaction can have implications for finance and supply-chain operations as well as for the team that entered it.
That connection does not mean every handoff is automatic or that every process works without configuration. Organizations may need to define workflows, connect other applications, and maintain accurate data. SAP describes ERP as a way to support core processes with a unified view of activity; that is a description of the system’s intended capability, not a guarantee of a specific business result. What are ERP modules?
Modules are the functional parts of an ERP suite. Common coverage includes:

- Human resources: employee-related processes.
- Manufacturing: production planning and operations.
- Inventory and order management: stock and customer-order processes.
- Supply chain: activities involved in moving goods and coordinating supply.
- Other capabilities: project management, risk and compliance, and sales may also be included.
Availability varies by vendor, product tier, industry, and integration. A capability may be built in, offered as an optional module, or supplied by a separate application. SAP notes that organizations can select modules and add capabilities as requirements change, and that industry needs may be addressed in core functions or through extensions. SAP UK’s ERP overview
How does an ERP connect with other software?
An ERP suite may not replace every application an organization uses. It can exchange information with external systems through connectors or custom adaptors, including APIs, enterprise service buses, or integration-platform-as-a-service tools. The right approach depends on the applications involved and the information that needs to move between them. SAP outlines these integration approaches in its ERP guide.

When evaluating a system, identify which existing applications must connect, what information they share, and who will manage those connections. Data quality and integration work matter because connected software cannot reliably coordinate processes if the information it receives is incomplete or inconsistent.
What are the main ERP deployment options?
| Deployment | What it means | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| On premises | The organization runs the software on its own infrastructure. | Who operates and maintains the infrastructure and application; responsibilities depend on the specific arrangement. |
| Cloud SaaS | The provider hosts the application, which users access by subscription. | Check the service contract for hosting, support, patching, updates, and other responsibilities. Oracle describes its SaaS model as provider-hosted, with subscription fees covering support and the provider applying patches and updates. |
| Hybrid | ERP components or related applications are split between on-premises and cloud environments. | Determine how the environments connect and which party operates each component. |
| Cloud infrastructure hosting | Existing applications run on cloud infrastructure. | Cloud hosting alone does not make an application SaaS; the application and infrastructure arrangements are distinct. |
These descriptions distinguish common arrangements, but the actual division of duties depends on the product and contract. Oracle describes the distinctions and migration considerations in its on-premises-to-cloud FAQ. Its SaaS description should not be treated as a universal promise about every provider’s service terms.

What are the benefits and limitations of ERP?
The central capability is coordination: connected processes and shared information can give teams a more unified view of business activity. Vendors also promote efficiency, collaboration, and visibility, but those outcomes are not automatic. They depend on process design, implementation choices, employee adoption, data quality, and integration.
ERP scope can be substantial, and a connected suite may still need configuration or extensions to fit an organization’s processes or industry. The vendor descriptions cited here do not establish a guaranteed return on investment or quantify what a particular organization will gain. Treat advertised benefits as capabilities to assess against your own requirements, not as promised results.

How should an organization evaluate ERP options?
Start with the work the system needs to support rather than a vendor’s feature list. Compare candidates against the same practical questions:
- Process and industry fit: Which requirements are supported in the core product, and which need extensions or changes to existing processes?
- Module scope: Which functions are included, optional, or dependent on another product?
- Deployment responsibilities: Who hosts and operates the application and infrastructure, and how are support and updates handled?
- Integration: Which current systems need to exchange information, and what connection method and ongoing ownership will that require?
- Future requirements: Will the arrangement meet anticipated needs as well as current ones, given the organization’s desired control and capacity to operate the system?
Oracle advises evaluating cloud applications against current and future business requirements rather than simply reproducing an existing system’s feature checklist. That is a useful principle for any ERP comparison: fit should be assessed against actual processes and responsibilities, not assumed from a product label. Oracle’s ERP deployment FAQ
