Equifax has not published an official meaning for error code NH that can be confirmed. Third-party explanations disagree about what it signals, and consumer reports show only that people have seen it, not why. The practical path is to ask Equifax what NH means in the situation where you saw it, and to get your report through official channels in the meantime.

What NH is known to mean (and what is not)

No official Equifax page defining NH has been identified. Two kinds of explanation circulate online:

  • Third-party guides describe NH as meaning missing or unavailable information, or as an inability to locate or verify a consumer file. The Credit People published one such explanation under the title “What Is Equifax Error Code NH?” It is a secondary explanation, not Equifax documentation.
  • A consumer comment on an Equifax LinkedIn post reports “getting an ERROR CODE NH when trying to access my Equifax online account.” That is a user-reported phrase, not an official description.

These accounts do not establish one cause. Avoid treating NH as a confirmed signal of any of the following: no credit history, an identity mismatch, a split file, or a lender’s decision on an application. None of those conclusions is supported by an official source.

Where you saw the code changes what to ask

The most useful detail is the screen or step where NH appeared. Equifax can only interpret the code for a specific request, so note the context before you contact anyone.

Where NH appeared What to ask Equifax First action
Online account access (the situation described in the consumer comment) What NH means for my account sign-in, and what identity verification is required to proceed Try a report request through AnnualCreditReport.com; if that fails, call Equifax
While requesting a credit report What NH means for this specific request, and what information is needed to complete it Retry through AnnualCreditReport.com, then call Equifax at (888) 378-4329 if it still fails
In a lender or other third-party context Not stated: no official source identifies what a lender-side NH notice means Ask the lender what the notice refers to and which bureau it used, then request your Equifax report directly

How to get your report when NH blocks access

  1. Record what you saw. Take a screenshot or copy the exact notice, and write down the date, time, device, browser, and the step you were on. Do not assume the code points to a particular account or cause.
  2. Request the report through AnnualCreditReport.com. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) lists this centralized service for requesting reports. It routes the request to the reporting company you select, so choose Equifax.
  3. If the online route fails, call Equifax at (888) 378-4329. The CFPB’s Equifax guidance lists this direct number for consumers who cannot obtain a report through AnnualCreditReport.com. Ask what NH means for your request, what information or identity verification is needed, and how to proceed if the online route stays unavailable. Phone numbers and processes can change, so confirm the number on the CFPB’s Equifax page before you dial.
  4. Check the report once you have it. Review your personal details (name, addresses, Social Security number fragments, employers) and every account listed. Note anything inaccurate or incomplete.
  5. Dispute specific errors. Follow the process in the next section for each item.

How to dispute an error on your report

If the report is available and contains inaccurate or incomplete information, dispute it with the credit reporting company and with the company that supplied the information (the furnisher). The CFPB’s dispute guidance is direct on where to start:

“If you identify an error, you should start by disputing that information with the credit reporting company (Experian, Equifax, and/or TransUnion).”

When you file, explain what is wrong and why, attach copies of supporting documents, and keep a copy of everything you send. Furnishers generally must investigate and respond within 30 days of receiving a dispute, according to the CFPB’s 2026 dispute guidance. That is a general timeline for disputes. It is not a promised time for resolving NH or restoring online access.

When to escalate to a CFPB complaint

The CFPB lists problems getting access to your own credit report among the issues consumers can raise through its complaint process. Consider filing a complaint if you cannot access your report after trying AnnualCreditReport.com and calling Equifax, or if a dispute remains unresolved. Keep your screenshots, the date and name of anyone you spoke with, and your dispute confirmation numbers so the complaint can reference them.

What not to do

  • Do not pay a credit-repair company to clear NH. No official source supports the idea that any paid service can remove or fix the code.
  • Do not assume a single step will clear NH. The reports describe different situations, and the right route depends on whether you cannot access your report, the report is available but wrong, or the problem is still unresolved.
  • Do not treat a third-party definition as official. Ask Equifax for its interpretation in writing when possible.
