That is a time-stamped estimate—not cash in a bank account or an audited personal balance sheet. Most of the wealth Forbes attributes to Musk is tied to his stakes in SpaceX and Tesla, so changes in their share prices and valuations can move the estimate.
How much is Elon Musk worth?
Forbes displayed a real-time net-worth estimate of $981 billion as of October 4, 2026 on Musk’s profile, where it ranked him first globally. Net worth is not the same as readily spendable money. Forbes attributes most of Musk’s fortune to company stakes, principally SpaceX and Tesla. The value assigned to those holdings can change with market prices and company valuations; selling a large stake would also be different from simply having an estimated value on paper.

Zip2 and PayPal provided the starting capital
The Associated Press reported that sales of Zip2 and PayPal brought Musk about $200 million. According to the AP, he used that money to start SpaceX and invest in Tesla. SpaceX and Tesla became the principal sources of wealth
Forbes identifies SpaceX and, to a lesser extent, Tesla as the main holdings behind Musk’s fortune. Its profile also names stakes in The Boring Company and Neuralink, but the available figures do not break out a dated dollar value for each holding. Musk’s wealth is therefore closely linked to how investors and valuation models price his companies, not just to salary or cash income.
Why do estimates change?
A net-worth estimate combines the estimated value of assets with liabilities and ownership assumptions. For a fortune concentrated in companies, changes in share prices or private-company valuations can materially alter the result even when no asset is sold. A published figure is a snapshot using a publisher’s approach, not a promise that the person could convert that sum to cash immediately.

What to keep in mind when reading a billionaire net-worth figure
- Check the date and publisher. A live estimate may change after market movements; a number from an earlier article can quickly become stale.
- Distinguish estimated wealth from liquid funds. Company stakes make up much of the reported fortune, and their estimated value is not equivalent to cash available to spend.
- Do not treat a ranking as permanent. Forbes ranked Musk first on the cited October 4, 2026 profile, but rankings can shift as estimates change.
