The coffee is optional; the defining feature is a short spell of office presence, often marked by a badge swipe, before leaving to work elsewhere. It describes a behavior, not a standardized attendance category, and there is no universal number of minutes that qualifies.
How common is coffee badging?
Two U.S. surveys produced notably different estimates, but they should not be read as evidence that the behavior rose or fell over time. The surveys used different samples and wording, and the sources do not provide a harmonized time series.

Owl Labs also reported that 27% of workers were in hybrid arrangements and 11% were fully remote in 2024. Those are work-arrangement figures, not additional estimates of coffee-badging prevalence. See the Owl Labs 2024 report and Monster’s 2025 poll for their respective survey contexts.
Why are employees coffee badging?
People may use a brief visit to meet an attendance expectation while preserving flexibility, but survey respondents described multiple possible motivations. In Monster’s 2025 poll, participants connected coffee badging with balancing remote work and in-office visibility for career growth (21%), signaling a desire for more remote work (21%), socializing with coworkers (17%), and avoiding long commutes by traveling off-peak (14%). These are respondents’ reported perceptions, not proof that all participants share any one motive.

Owl Labs’ 2024 report found that 75% of workers believed employers required office work because of traditional expectations. That measures workers’ beliefs, not employers’ actual reasons. Attendance rules can also intersect with commuting demands and morale, as described in TechTarget’s 2024 explainer.
What happens if an employer catches someone?
Reported responses vary. Among Owl Labs respondents who reported being caught, 59% said their employer did not mind, while 11% said the employer was unhappy and required a full office day; 30% said they had not been caught. These figures describe that report’s respondents, not a universal employer policy.

Some employers track attendance through badge or key-card swipes, and TechTarget describes examples of stricter return-to-office policies. A recorded entry does not, by itself, establish how much work someone completed or whether they were productive. Nor do these reports establish a general legal consequence: policy, employment terms, accommodations, and applicable law vary.
Does coffee badging improve productivity or work-life balance?
The available survey findings describe perceptions, not demonstrated effects. Monster’s poll found divided views: some respondents saw potential productivity benefits in flexible routines and remote work, while others pointed to commuting time and reduced in-person collaboration as drawbacks. Respondents also expressed mixed views about work-life balance. Those opinions do not show that coffee badging causes productivity gains, harms collaboration, or improves balance; the sources cited here do not establish causal evidence about the practice itself.

How to handle an attendance mandate
If a brief visit seems like the only workable way to meet an office requirement, first clarify what the policy actually expects. A badge swipe may record entry without satisfying a full-day or other presence requirement.
- Review the written policy. Check required office days, whether presence is expected for the full day, how attendance is recorded, and whether the rules allow schedule flexibility.
- Identify the practical issue. Be specific about commute timing, caregiving or other personal needs, and which work is better done with colleagues in person.
- Discuss options with your manager. Ask whether flexible hours, team-selected office days, or another arrangement is available. The Associated Press recommends an honest conversation about personal needs and available flexibility; its report on return-to-office mandates also describes workers exploring options with employers.
- Get the arrangement clarified. Confirm any agreed schedule and how it will be evaluated so that a brief recorded visit is not mistaken for a full-day commitment—or vice versa.
Comparing workplace arrangements can help make that conversation concrete: expected office days, full-day presence, attendance tracking, tasks that benefit from shared time, schedule flexibility, commute burden, and whether the team can select common office days. No single arrangement is best for every role or worker.
