Cash on hand usually means physical money you can access immediately, such as banknotes and coins. In formal financial reporting under IAS 7, however, “cash” also includes demand deposits—bank balances withdrawable on demand. The meaning depends on context, so distinguish everyday spending from accounting classification.
What does “cash on hand” mean?
In ordinary personal-finance conversation, cash on hand generally means physical currency available to spend. A person with banknotes in a wallet may describe that money as cash on hand, while referring to a checking-account balance separately.
Accounting uses a broader definition of cash. IAS 7, the International Accounting Standards Board standard on cash-flow statements, says: “Cash comprises cash on hand and demand deposits.” A demand deposit is money held at a bank that can be withdrawn on demand. The IFRS Foundation presents the standard’s definition in its IAS 7 overview.
For example, someone with $200 in banknotes and $1,000 in a checking account might call only the banknotes “cash on hand” in casual conversation. In an IAS 7 accounting explanation, both the banknotes and the demand-deposit balance are cash.

Cash, demand deposits, and cash equivalents
Cash equivalents are a separate accounting category from cash. Under IAS 7, they are short-term, highly liquid investments that can readily be converted into known amounts of cash and carry an insignificant risk of changes in value. They are held to meet short-term cash commitments, rather than for investment or another purpose.
IAS 7 says an investment normally qualifies only when it has a short maturity—“say, three months or less” from the date of acquisition. That is a typical criterion, not an automatic rule: maturity alone does not establish that an investment is a cash equivalent. The investment must also meet the liquidity, convertibility, value-risk, and purpose criteria. See the IFRS Foundation’s IAS 7 overview and the Australian Accounting Standards Board’s AASB 107 compilation for the relevant standard text. The AASB document is an Australian compilation for annual periods beginning in 2026; reporting requirements can vary by jurisdiction and reporting period.

Why businesses report cash and cash equivalents
Businesses report cash and cash equivalents as part of their financial position and explain changes in them through a statement of cash flows. IAS 7 groups cash flows into operating, investing, and financing activities. Cash-flow information helps readers assess changes in an entity’s net assets and financial structure, as well as its liquidity, solvency, and ability to affect the amount and timing of cash flows. The IFRS Foundation’s IAS 7 overview describes these reporting purposes.
Liquidity is about resources available to meet short-term obligations, not just the amount of physical currency nearby. The Federal Reserve’s liquidity FAQ describes liquidity in terms of cash and other assets available to pay bills and meet short-term obligations; its household example includes checking-account balances, cash on hand, and some other investments. That broad illustration should not be read as an IAS 7 classification: an investment mentioned as a liquid resource is not automatically a cash equivalent under the accounting definition.

Does restricted money still count as cash?
Accounting classification and practical access are related but not identical. The IFRS Interpretations Committee concluded that a third-party contractual restriction on a demand deposit does not, by itself, make the deposit cease to be cash under IAS 7. It would cease to meet the definition if the restriction changes the nature of the deposit. IAS 7 also requires disclosure of significant cash and cash-equivalent balances held by an entity that are not available for use by the group. The IFRIC March 2022 update explains the committee’s conclusion.
If you are deciding whether money can cover a payment, check whether you can actually access it when needed. A deposit may be classified as cash for reporting while a legal, contractual, operational, or account restriction limits when or how it can be used.

How to interpret cash on hand in a personal-finance context
When reviewing your own finances, separate physical currency from money in accounts and investments. The distinctions help answer different questions: how much cash you have physically available, how much money you can withdraw on demand, and how much of your investments can be converted into cash promptly without material uncertainty about the amount.
There is no universal amount of cash on hand that every household or business should keep. The appropriate amount depends on expected near-term outflows, obligations, circumstances, and access to other liquid resources. Cash is one part of a financial picture; it does not by itself establish net worth, profit, or overall financial health.
