LCSW stands for licensed clinical social worker. In the United States, it is a common title for a social worker licensed to provide clinical services, which can include assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders. The exact license title and permitted work depend on the state or other jurisdiction.

What does a licensed clinical social worker do?

Clinical social workers help people address mental health concerns and difficult life situations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says their work can include individual, group, family, and couples therapy; strategies for changing behavior or coping with challenges; and referrals to other services. The BLS describes licensed clinical social workers as professionals authorized to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders.

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) describes clinical social work as a specialty that may involve assessment, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and psychotherapy. Its 2025 Model Social Work Practice Act also includes private practice and clinical supervision in its model language. That act is a model, not law that automatically applies in every state or province.

For the occupational overview, see the BLS description of social workers.

What does LCSW mean, and is that title used everywhere?

LCSW means licensed clinical social worker. It is a common U.S. license title, but not a uniform nationwide label. Some jurisdictions use a similar title, and license categories and legal scopes of practice vary. The BLS puts it this way: “Social workers who are licensed to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders are called clinical social workers (CSW), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW), or have a similar title; specific titles vary by state.”

That variation matters when you are looking for care or considering a social work license. Check the licensing board for the jurisdiction involved to confirm the title, what services the license permits, and any applicable restrictions.

How does a social worker generally become an LCSW?

In the United States, the broad route generally includes graduate education, supervised clinical practice, and a license from the state where the social worker practices. BLS says clinical social workers need a master’s degree, supervised experience, and a license; it also says applicants must pass a clinical exam after completing supervised experience. ASWB describes a general pathway involving an MSW from an accredited institution, supervised post-degree practice, and a passing score on the Clinical Social Work Licensing Exam.

Those are broad outlines, not a universal checklist. The number and type of supervised hours, supervision rules, exam steps, fees, and license name can differ by jurisdiction. Consult the applicable statutes or administrative rules and confirm current requirements with the relevant regulator. ASWB provides an overview of social work licensure and advises applicants to check the rules where they intend to practice.

What should you check when choosing a mental health professional?

A title alone does not establish whether a professional can provide a particular service in a particular place. When comparing an LCSW with another mental health professional, verify the relevant jurisdiction’s rules and consider:

  • Whether the person is authorized to provide the service you are seeking.
  • The education and supervised experience required for the license.
  • The exact license title and scope of practice in that jurisdiction.

The available sources do not establish a universal, detailed comparison between LCSWs, psychologists, counselors, and psychiatrists. Check the relevant regulator’s rules and the practitioner’s credentials rather than relying on job titles alone.

Does an LCSW need authorization to provide telehealth across state lines?

Social workers need authorization in the jurisdiction where they practice, including when services are provided remotely. If a client or practitioner is across a state or provincial border, confirm the rules with the regulator for the jurisdiction where the service will be practiced. ASWB’s telehealth guidance and its licensure information can help identify the issue, but the local regulator’s rules control.
