What Is an Experience Letter for Insurance?

An insurance experience letter documents your policies and claims with one insurer. Learn when you may need one, how to request it and what it can—and cannot—do for a new policy.

An insurance experience letter is a statement from an insurer showing your policy and claims history with that company. A new insurer may ask for it when it cannot verify your prior history through its usual sources. Request one from each previous insurer you need documented, and ask the new insurer what dates and details it requires; acceptance and any discount depend on the carrier and location.

What does an insurance experience letter show?

Also called a claim experience letter or claim history letter, it records information about your policies and claims with one insurer. It is not a complete record of every policy you have held: if you had multiple insurers, you may need a separate letter from each.

Common details include the policyholder’s name, policy numbers and coverage dates, insured property address or vehicle, and cancellation information. For each claim, the letter may show its date, cause, status and amount paid. An auto letter may also identify the driver considered responsible, the percentage of fault and the vehicle involved. These are typical fields, not a universal required format. Square One’s guide to insurance letters of experience describes these contents and was updated September 11, 2026.

Why might a new insurer ask for one?

A prospective insurer may request the letter if its usual sources do not provide a complete picture of your previous coverage or claims. This can arise when you move between regions or countries. The letter supplies documentation from the prior insurer, but the new carrier decides whether it accepts that history for underwriting or a discount.

For example, Square One notes that a person moving to Canada from abroad or between provinces may have a gap in the history available to a new carrier. A carrier may still offer a policy without the letter but decline to apply a claims-free discount if the history is not documented. Insurers are not required to count foreign insurance or driving experience for a discount, so ask the carrier directly rather than assuming the letter will reduce your premium.

Insurance claims history is different from driving history. Driving records can include accidents, speeding tickets and other convictions even when they did not lead to an insurance claim. An insurer may consider both when you apply.

How do I get a letter of experience from my insurance company?

  1. Ask the new insurer what it needs. Confirm the years to be covered, required details and whether it has a form or specific format. Ask whether it accepts a letter, renewal notice, no-claims confirmation, loss run or database report.
  2. Contact each prior insurer. The insurer that held the policy issues the letter. Contact it directly, or ask your broker to help with the request. Provide enough information for the company to locate your policy and follow its request process; some carriers may ask you to submit the request in writing.
  3. Check the letter when it arrives. Verify the policyholder, coverage dates, insured vehicle or property and relevant claims. If information is missing or wrong, ask the prior insurer to correct it.
  4. Keep a copy and send the requested record. Do not describe a letter as proof of “no claims” unless it explicitly confirms that and covers the period the new insurer needs.

Procedures and accepted formats vary by carrier. A broker can assist, but the prior insurer is the source of the letter.

How does an experience letter differ from a loss run or claims database report?

These records can all help with insurance underwriting, but they come from different sources and may cover different information. A new insurer might not accept one in place of another, so confirm its requirements before requesting documents.

Experience letter Issued by a prior insurer; typically covers that company’s policies and claims. Request it from each relevant insurer. Format and acceptance are carrier-dependent; no universal coverage period is established.
Loss-run statement A claims report, often discussed in commercial insurance. Florida law defines it by policy number, coverage period, claim count, paid losses and loss dates. Florida Statutes § 627.444 sets specific requirements for covered lines, including timing and history periods. Those rules are Florida-specific and do not establish a general right to an experience letter elsewhere.
C.L.U.E. report A U.S. claims database report based on participating insurers’ data. The Utah Insurance Department says personal-property history can cover up to five years. Consumers can request their own report and report errors. Participation matters, and a claim may appear even if no payment was made. A carrier may not accept this report instead of a requested insurer letter.

Florida’s 2024 Florida Statutes § 627.444 requires a designated insurer or party to provide a loss-run statement—or, for personal lines, information on obtaining one through a consumer reporting agency—within 15 calendar days after receiving a written request. For most covered lines, the statement must include five years of history, or all available history if shorter; for group health, it is three years or all available history if shorter. The section provides one statement each year without charge and excludes life insurers. These are rules about Florida loss-run statements, not a nationwide rule for experience letters.

The Utah Insurance Department’s C.L.U.E. FAQ explains the database’s role in underwriting and rating and how consumers can obtain and challenge their reports. Its stated “up to five years” applies to personal-property claims history, not necessarily every type of claim or every insurer’s data.

Will an experience letter lower my insurance premium?

Not by itself. It documents history; the new insurer decides whether that history qualifies for a discount or affects the price. Rules and practices differ by insurer and location. Ask whether the specific years and records you provide will count before relying on a lower premium.
