An across-the-board bet is three equal wagers on the same horse: one to win, one to place and one to show. The horse’s finish determines how many wagers can pay: first place can pay all three, second can pay two, and third can pay only the show wager. “Across the board” does not guarantee a profit or even return the full amount staked.
What does “across the board” mean?
The New York Racing Association defines an across-the-board wager as “separate win, place, and show wagers of equal amounts on the same horse.” In plain language, you back one horse to finish in each of three eligible ways, using three separate wager components on a single ticket.
The terms describe the qualifying finish for each component: a win wager pays if the horse finishes first; a place wager pays if it finishes first or second; and a show wager pays if it finishes first, second or third. See NYRA’s wagering definitions.
How the three wagers pay
| Horse’s finish | Components that may pay | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| First | Win, place and show | All three components may pay. |
| Second | Place and show | The win component loses; the other two may pay. |
| Third | Show | Only the show component may pay. |
| Outside the first three | None | All three components lose. |
These are separate payouts, not one payout that is the same for any top-three finish. The Kentucky Derby glossary describes the layered pattern, and Equibase likewise explains that a single ticket can represent the three wagers. The actual amount returned depends on each applicable payout.

How much does an across-the-board bet cost?
The total stake is three times the amount wagered on each component. For example, putting $2 on each of win, place and show means $6 staked in total. TwinSpires gives that $6 total for three $2 wagers in its horse racing glossary. The Kentucky Derby’s 2025 Media Guide lists a $2 minimum for each component in its glossary, which also makes a three-component ticket $6 at those minimums.
Those figures are examples from the named sources, not a universal current minimum. Minimums and available wager amounts depend on the track or wagering service, so check the rules where you intend to bet.

How it differs from exacta and trifecta bets
An across-the-board bet covers one horse through three separate finish-position wagers. An exacta and a trifecta instead require selecting multiple horses in a specific order. NYRA defines an exacta as requiring the first two finishers in the correct order, and a trifecta as requiring the first three in the correct order. The bet types therefore differ in both the number of horses selected and the finish conditions.

In pari-mutuel wagering, bets of the same type go into a pool, and payouts reflect the money wagered on the horses or combinations in that pool. NYRA explains that the track deducts a percentage of the money wagered for purses, expenses and state taxes before determining payouts. Because win, place and show are separate wager types, their payouts come from their respective pools; the words “across the board” do not set an odds multiplier or guaranteed return. See NYRA’s explanation of pari-mutuel wagering.

What to check before placing the wager
- Confirm the per-component amount and the resulting total stake: an across-the-board ticket contains three wagers.
- Check the track or service’s minimums and rules, rather than assuming another venue’s figures apply.
- Understand that finishing first, second or third can produce different combinations of payouts, and that any payout depends on the relevant pool.
- Set a budget you can afford to lose; a top-three finish does not by itself establish that the payouts will exceed the total stake.
