A personal loan is money borrowed from a lender for personal use and repaid under agreed terms. A common form is a personal installment loan: you receive a lump sum upfront, then repay it in installments over a set period. Before accepting an offer, compare its APR, fees, rate structure, repayment term, and total cost—not just the monthly payment.

How a personal loan works

With a personal installment loan, the lender provides a sum at the start and you repay it in fixed installments over a specific period. It is closed-end credit: you borrow a stated amount rather than drawing repeatedly from an ongoing credit line. The CFPB lists a large purchase, an unexpected expense, and consolidating existing debt as possible uses. CFPB: What is a personal installment loan?

The amount, duration, payment schedule, and terms depend on the specific offer. Lenders may consider credit reports and scores, income, debts, the requested amount and term, other factors such as bank-account transactions, and limits under applicable state law. Rates may be fixed or adjustable, so check the offer to see whether the rate and payments can change.

What determines the cost?

Interest rate and APR are different

The interest rate is the cost charged for borrowing principal. Annual percentage rate (APR) combines the interest rate with certain lender fees, such as an origination charge. Because fees affect the APR, compare APR with APR when reviewing offers, and use the loan disclosure to see which charges are included. CFPB: Interest rate versus APR

Fees to check

Personal installment loans may include origination or documentation fees, late fees, and other charges. The CFPB also identifies credit or disability insurance, which is generally optional, and non-filing insurance when collateral is involved. Read the disclosure and loan documents to determine which fees apply to your specific offer. CFPB: Personal installment loan fees

How to compare personal loan offers

Compare offers for the same borrowing amount and, where possible, the same repayment period. Review the lender’s disclosures and compare these terms:

  • APR and interest rate: Keep the figures distinct; APR includes certain fees.
  • Fees: Check origination and documentation charges, late fees, and whether optional insurance is included.
  • Rate structure: Confirm whether the rate is fixed or adjustable and whether payments can change.
  • Repayment terms: Compare the amount borrowed, term, payment schedule, and total repayment cost shown in the documents.

A longer term may reduce the monthly payment without making the loan less expensive overall. Assess the total repayment obligation alongside APR and fees; a low payment by itself does not show which offer costs less.

Personal loan versus personal line of credit

A personal line of credit is a different product from a closed-end installment loan. If you are considering one, check its APR and whether it can change, fees to access the line, annual fees, late-payment fees, and charges for other events. Compare its costs with the personal loan and other available credit. CFPB: Shopping for a personal line of credit

What happens if you miss a payment?

A missed payment may lead to collection activity or payment reporting to one or more major credit-reporting companies; late payments can significantly affect credit scores and reports. If you think you may not be able to pay, contact the lender promptly. Depending on the lender and your circumstances, possible options may include deferment, forbearance, or a payment plan.

Do not mistake a payday-loan example for a personal-loan rate

The CFPB illustrates APR with a two-week payday loan: a $15 charge for borrowing $100 annualizes to almost 400% APR. That is an example of how a short-term fee translates into an annualized rate; it is not a typical personal-loan rate, a lender quote, or a statistic about the personal-loan market. Personal-loan terms and availability vary by lender, borrower, and jurisdiction. Review the actual offer and disclosures before deciding whether to borrow.
