What Is a Neocloud? How GPU Cloud Providers Differ from Hyperscalers

A neocloud puts GPU computing and AI infrastructure at the center of its offer. The term signals a provider’s focus, not a formal category or guarantee of particular capabilities.

A neocloud is a cloud provider that makes GPU computing and AI infrastructure its central focus. Hyperscalers, by contrast, offer broad cloud platforms in which GPU services are one part of a much larger portfolio. The distinction is about emphasis—not a formal certification or a hard line between what each type of provider can offer.

What is a neocloud?

“Neocloud” is a market term for an AI-first cloud provider, typically focused on supplying GPU compute for demanding workloads such as training and running AI models. Microsoft describes neoclouds as one option alongside hyperscalers and hybrid cloud, while NVIDIA presents its Cloud Partners as providers delivering infrastructure purpose-built for modern AI workloads at production scale. (Microsoft’s overview; NVIDIA Cloud Partners)

The label does not identify a standards-defined class. The sources do not establish an official register or a universal test for deciding which providers count. A provider may offer GPU instances, clusters, an integrated AI cloud, or access to infrastructure through a marketplace; the label alone does not establish its hardware, networking, contract terms, or managed services.

How do neoclouds differ from hyperscalers?

The simplest distinction is what each provider puts at the center of its offer. A neocloud focuses on accelerated computing for AI; a hyperscaler offers a broad cloud platform with many kinds of infrastructure and services. This is a difference in emphasis, not an absolute boundary: hyperscalers also offer GPUs, and neoclouds may provide services beyond GPU compute. (Microsoft; NVIDIA)

Capability boundary No universal boundary is established by the category label No universal boundary is established by the category label

For a personal-finance reader considering the business implications, the category name is not enough to estimate a project’s costs or assess a provider’s suitability. The available sources do not establish comparable current prices, regional availability, capacity, or service-level commitments. Those details need to be checked with each provider.

Which companies are examples?

NVIDIA’s Cloud Partner directory includes CoreWeave, Crusoe, Lambda, and Nebius. In a May 31, 2026 update, NVIDIA said CoreWeave, Crusoe, Lambda, Nebius, Vultr, and YTL had achieved Exemplar Cloud status. These are dated examples from NVIDIA’s ecosystem, not a complete or permanent membership list. (NVIDIA partner directory; NVIDIA, May 31, 2026)

Specific announcements illustrate why provider details matter more than the label. NVIDIA reported that CoreWeave launched cloud instances based on its GB200 NVL72 platform in February 2025. NVIDIA describes the GB200 NVL72 as a rack-scale system with a 72-GPU NVLink domain; that is an example of tightly connected GPU infrastructure, not a description of every neocloud. (NVIDIA, February 4, 2025)

In a March 11, 2026 partnership announcement, NVIDIA said its plan with Nebius would enable the provider to deploy more than 5 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems by the end of 2030. That figure is a future target stated by NVIDIA, not a report of capacity already deployed. (NVIDIA Newsroom, March 11, 2026)

How should you compare GPU cloud providers?

Compare the service against the workload and the platform needs around it. NVIDIA’s Exemplar Cloud initiative uses performance benchmarking recipes to establish standardized benchmarks across cloud providers, but a benchmark is useful only when you know what workload and configuration it represents. (NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud)

  1. Match performance evidence to the workload. Ask which benchmark, workload, and system configuration support a performance claim. Do not treat a result for one setup as a general ranking.
  2. Confirm the accelerator and capacity. Check whether the specific GPU type and amount of capacity your project needs are available in your location and on your timeline. Availability can change. NVIDIA’s DGX Cloud Lepton announcement describes a marketplace connecting developers with GPUs from a global network of cloud providers; access through a marketplace does not itself confirm that a particular configuration is available to you. (NVIDIA, May 19, 2025)
  3. Choose the service model. Establish whether you need infrastructure access, an integrated AI cloud, or a broad cloud platform. Providers grouped under the same label should not be assumed interchangeable. (Microsoft; NVIDIA partner directory)
  4. Check the surrounding platform. Identify which adjacent cloud functions your project requires and verify them in the provider’s documentation. The neocloud label does not establish what services are included or whether they match a particular project’s needs. (Microsoft)

What do forecasts and announcements actually tell you?

Market projections and expansion plans can describe expectations without establishing present-day market share or deployed capacity. Gartner’s June 23, 2026 press release forecast that neocloud providers would capture 20% of the $267 billion AI cloud market by 2030. This is Gartner’s forecast, not a measured share or a settled outcome. (Gartner, June 23, 2026)
