A midstream energy company operates the infrastructure that connects energy production with transportation, storage and customers. In the natural-gas business, that usually means collecting raw gas from wells, processing it to remove water, liquids and other impurities, and moving pipeline-quality gas through long-distance transmission systems. Some midstream operators also store gas or handle crude oil, refined products and natural gas liquids.

“Midstream” describes a position in the energy value chain rather than one specific asset or business model. One company may own gathering lines and processing plants; another may operate transmission pipelines and storage; a third may combine several stages. To understand what a particular operator does, identify its commodities, assets, regions, customers and contract arrangements.

What does a midstream energy company do?

Midstream companies provide the connecting services between the wells or mines where energy is produced and the refineries, utilities, distributors, exporters and industrial users that consume it. Their infrastructure can include:

  • Gathering pipelines that collect unprocessed hydrocarbons near production sites.
  • Processing plants that remove water, hydrocarbon liquids and other contaminants from natural gas.
  • Transmission pipelines that move prepared gas over longer distances.
  • Storage facilities that hold gas or other products until customers need them.
  • Facilities and pipelines for crude oil, refined products and natural gas liquids.
  • Compressor stations, measurement equipment, control systems and interconnections that keep products moving through the network.

These assets work as a system, but they are distinct stages. A gathering line is not the same thing as a transmission pipeline, and a processing plant performs a different job from a storage facility. A company can specialize in one stage or own several.

How gathering, processing and pipelines fit together

Natural gas provides the clearest example of the midstream chain. The simplified path is:

Producing well → gathering line → processing plant → transmission pipeline → storage, distribution or customer

Real systems are more interconnected. Gas may enter or leave at multiple points, bypass a processing plant when its composition allows, move into storage before reaching a customer, or be split into methane and separate liquid products. The diagram is therefore a useful model, not a map of every facility.

1. Production and the wellhead

Upstream producers bring raw gas to the wellhead. This gas is not necessarily ready for a high-pressure transmission system. Depending on the field, it can contain water, hydrocarbon gas liquids such as ethane and propane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide or other substances. Its composition determines what treatment is needed.

2. Gathering systems collect raw gas

Gathering is the first midstream movement after production. A network of smaller lines collects gas from individual wells or a field and carries it toward a processing plant or an interconnection with a larger pipeline. Gathering systems generally operate at lower pressures and use smaller-diameter pipe than transmission systems.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes the function this way:

“Gathering systems, primarily made up of small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines, move raw natural gas from the wellhead to a natural gas processing plant or to an interconnection with a larger mainline pipeline.”

Gathering networks can contain many branches because production wells are spread across a field. The network’s capacity, pressure and connection points affect how easily producers can move gas when wells are operating at different rates.

3. Processing makes gas suitable for transport

At a processing plant, operators separate unwanted substances and valuable liquids from the methane-rich gas stream. Treatment may remove water, corrosive or toxic compounds, inert gases and hydrocarbon liquids. The exact sequence depends on the raw gas; not every stream requires the same equipment or level of treatment.

Processing can produce two or more saleable outputs. Pipeline-quality gas continues toward transmission, while separated natural gas liquids may be sent to fractionation, storage, petrochemical plants or other markets. The plant therefore changes both the quality and the commercial destination of the original wellhead stream.

4. Transmission moves prepared gas longer distances

Transmission pipelines are larger, higher-pressure systems designed to move gas from producing or processing regions toward distribution regions and major customers. Compressor stations maintain pressure along the route. Interconnections allow one pipeline system to receive gas from another, send gas to storage, or deliver into a local distribution network.

Transmission is the long-distance link, but it is not the final delivery to most homes or businesses. Local distribution companies generally receive gas at a transfer point and use lower-pressure distribution mains to serve end users. Large industrial customers and power plants may connect directly to a transmission system.

5. Storage and delivery balance timing

Storage facilities hold gas for later use. They can connect production that occurs steadily with demand that changes by season, weather or time of day. A gas system may inject gas into storage when supply exceeds immediate demand and withdraw it when customers need additional volumes.

Storage is part of the delivery infrastructure, but owning storage does not mean a company owns the upstream wells or the local distribution network. It is one service in a chain that may involve several independent operators.

What is the difference between upstream, midstream and downstream?

The three labels describe broad positions in the energy value chain. They overlap in some companies, so the labels should be treated as a starting point rather than a complete description of a business.

Segment Main activity Typical assets or services Where it sits in the chain
Upstream Finds and produces hydrocarbons Exploration programs, wells, drilling and production equipment At the source of the commodity
Midstream Collects, treats, transports and stores hydrocarbons Gathering lines, processing plants, transmission pipelines, storage, terminals and interconnections Between production and markets
Downstream Converts, distributes or sells energy products Refineries, fuel distribution, local gas distribution, power generation and retail channels Closest to end markets and consumers

A single integrated energy company can have activities in all three segments. Conversely, a specialist may own only a regional gathering network or only a transmission pipeline. The word “midstream” therefore identifies the function of an asset or business, not necessarily the legal structure of the owner.

What assets can a midstream company own?

Gathering pipelines

Gathering lines connect producing wells to a central collection point, processing plant or mainline interconnection. They are commonly smaller and lower pressure than transmission lines. Their footprint can be extensive in a productive basin because each well pad needs a route into the network.

Processing plants

Processing plants separate contaminants and liquids from raw gas. Equipment may include separators, dehydration units, acid-gas removal systems, cryogenic or refrigeration units and fractionation connections, although the required configuration varies with the gas composition. A plant’s nameplate capacity does not by itself show how much gas it handles; actual throughput depends on supply, maintenance, downstream connections and market conditions.

Transmission pipelines and compressor stations

Transmission systems use high-pressure pipe and compressor stations to move gas over long distances. Metering stations measure volumes at entry and exit points. Control rooms monitor pressure, flow and equipment status, while valves and other facilities allow operators to isolate sections for maintenance or emergencies.

Storage facilities

Storage may use underground formations or other facilities suited to the product. The useful question is not simply whether a company owns storage, but how that storage connects to pipelines, what withdrawal and injection capabilities it has, and which customers or markets it serves.

Liquids and other hydrocarbons

Some midstream businesses handle crude oil, refined products or natural gas liquids in addition to natural gas. The physical systems differ by commodity, but the connecting role is similar: move production to processing, transportation, storage or a downstream market.

How do midstream companies make money?

There is no single revenue model that applies to every midstream operator. A company may receive payments for gathering, processing, transportation, storage or terminal services; it may sell separated liquids; or it may combine several arrangements. The commercial terms depend on the asset, customer, geography, commodity and contract.

Do not assume that every midstream business is purely fee-based or insulated from commodity prices. Some contracts can expose an operator to throughput, utilization, quality, timing or commodity-price changes. Others may provide more predictable payments but still depend on the financial strength of customers and the continued operation of connected assets.

When assessing a named company, read its latest filings and customer disclosures for:

  • The commodities and services that generate revenue.
  • Whether contracts are short-term, long-term, take-or-pay, interruptible, percentage-of-proceeds or another structure.
  • How much capacity is contracted and how much is available for new volumes.
  • Customer concentration and the credit quality of counterparties.
  • Exposure to commodity prices, processing spreads and natural-gas or liquids volumes.
  • Capital spending, debt obligations, expansion projects and regulatory requirements.

These are company-specific questions. A description of the midstream sector cannot establish the risk profile of an individual operator without current disclosures.

How large is the U.S. natural-gas pipeline system?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports approximately 3 million miles of natural-gas mainline and other pipelines. On the same explainer, EIA reports that the network delivered about 29.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to approximately 78.3 million consumers in 2022. The mileage describes the national network, while the delivery and customer figures refer specifically to 2022.

Gathering infrastructure is a separate subset. A Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration report published in 2024 cites a 2019 study estimating more than 340,000 miles of natural-gas gathering pipeline and several thousand compressor stations. That gathering estimate should not be added mechanically to EIA’s network-wide mileage figure: the sources use different scopes, dates and definitions.

How are gathering and transmission pipelines regulated?

Pipeline regulation depends on the line’s classification, commodity, location and applicable federal or state rules. PHMSA describes gathering lines as carrying crude oil or natural gas from a production site to a central collection point. They generally operate at relatively low pressures and flows and are smaller than transmission lines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PHMSA states that gathering pipelines are regulated under federal pipeline-safety rules subject to specific exceptions. “Gathering” therefore does not automatically mean that a line is exempt from regulation. Legal classification can depend on the facts of the system and the rule being applied.

For a real project or investment, verify the current requirements with the relevant agency and the operator’s filings. A general sector explanation cannot determine whether a particular segment qualifies as gathering, transmission or another regulated category.

How to compare two midstream energy companies

Use a consistent framework instead of comparing only pipeline mileage or a company’s name. The following checklist separates the questions that can materially change the business profile.

  1. Identify the commodities. Determine whether the company handles dry gas, natural gas liquids, crude oil, refined products or several commodities.
  2. Map the assets. List gathering systems, processing plants, transmission lines, storage, terminals and interconnections. Note which assets are owned, leased or operated for another owner.
  3. Place each asset in the chain. A gathering network connected to one processing plant has a different role from a long-distance transmission corridor linked to multiple markets.
  4. Check geography. Regions differ in production volumes, pipeline competition, weather-driven demand and access to downstream markets.
  5. Read the contract terms. Look for duration, renewal provisions, volume commitments, pricing formulas, commodity exposure and termination rights.
  6. Measure customer and basin concentration. Heavy dependence on one producer, processor, utility or region can create a different risk than a diversified network.
  7. Review capacity and utilization. Nameplate capacity is potential throughput; actual volumes show how much of the system customers are using.
  8. Review regulation and permitting. Confirm which rules apply to each asset and whether expansions, environmental permits or safety obligations could affect timing and cost.
  9. Check financial commitments. Examine debt maturities, capital projects, maintenance spending and obligations to fund connected facilities.
Comparison question Why it matters
What commodities are handled? Gas, liquids and crude have different processing, transportation and market requirements.
Which stages are covered? Gathering, processing, transmission and storage create different operating and commercial dependencies.
Who are the customers? Producer, utility, industrial and trading customers can have different volume patterns and credit risks.
How concentrated are assets? A single basin, corridor or plant can make results more sensitive to local disruptions.
What do contracts say? Contract structure determines how volumes, prices and customer performance affect revenue.
What is the regulatory status? Classification and jurisdiction affect operating duties, reporting and expansion requirements.

A practical example: from a gas well to a customer

Imagine several wells producing raw gas in the same field. A gathering operator connects each well pad to a network of small-diameter lines. The network delivers the combined stream to a processing plant. The plant removes water and other contaminants and separates marketable liquids. The treated gas enters a high-pressure transmission pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transmission system carries the gas to a region with power plants, factories and local distribution companies. Some volume may be injected into storage during a period of lower demand. Later, withdrawals can supplement pipeline receipts during a cold-weather period. The original gas may therefore pass through several independently owned assets before reaching a household or industrial burner.

At each handoff, the relevant questions change. Gathering depends on well connections and field production. Processing depends on gas composition and plant capacity. Transmission depends on pipeline capacity, compressor operation and downstream access. Storage depends on injection, withdrawal and market timing.

Common misconceptions about the midstream sector

“Midstream means only pipelines.”

Pipelines are central, but midstream also includes processing, storage, compressor stations, terminals, measurement systems and services for liquids and other hydrocarbons.

“Every gathering line is unregulated.”

PHMSA says gathering pipelines are subject to federal pipeline-safety rules with specific exceptions. The classification must be determined under the applicable rules and facts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“All midstream companies have the same exposure to commodity prices.”

Companies use different assets and contracts. Commodity exposure, throughput risk and customer credit risk must be assessed from current company disclosures rather than inferred from the word “midstream.”

“Processing is just transportation.”

Processing changes the composition of the stream by removing contaminants and separating liquids. It is a treatment and separation function, not simply a longer pipeline route.

“The largest pipeline mileage equals the strongest business.”

Mileage does not show utilization, contract quality, bottlenecks, maintenance needs, customer concentration or profitability. Those factors require a closer review of the operator and its filings.

Why midstream matters to households and investors

Most consumers encounter midstream infrastructure indirectly. The reliability and cost of gas-fired electricity, home heating, industrial production and fuel supply depend on connected systems that collect, process, transport and store energy. A disruption at one stage can constrain the stages after it, even when wells are producing normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For investors, the key is to analyze the specific infrastructure and contracts behind a company’s label. A gathering operator tied to a concentrated production area can face different volume and customer risks from a diversified transmission and storage business. A processor may depend on plant utilization and the value of separated liquids. A storage operator may be more affected by seasonal demand and price differences over time.

Those distinctions also explain why sector-wide statements can mislead. “Midstream” identifies where a business sits in the chain; it does not by itself reveal how stable its cash flow is, how sensitive it is to commodity markets, or which regulatory obligations apply.
