There is no defensible one-number value for every John Deere 4020 in the available evidence. Recent auction listings show tractors with different transmissions, hours shown, equipment and operating conditions, but they do not provide enough comparable realized prices, sale locations and terms to establish a current market range. To avoid underpricing yours, document its specifics and compare it with recent, closely matched tractors in your region—not with an asking price or an incomplete sale record.
What recent 4020 listings can—and cannot—tell you
AuctionTime’s John Deere 4020 auction results page includes 2026 listings with meaningful differences. One listing describes a 1965 4020 with 1,919 hours shown, a Synchro transmission, 2WD, and a seller statement that it starts, runs and operates. Another describes a 4020 with 6,887 hours shown, a Powershift transmission and a lift that does not work. Those descriptions illustrate why a tractor’s configuration and condition matter when comparing listings; they do not establish a price difference or a market value.
Read hour-meter figures as “hours shown” unless you have records that verify total operating hours. A meter reading in a listing is not proof of the tractor’s lifetime hours. Similarly, do not assume that Synchro, Powershift, or any other configuration automatically adds a fixed premium: the available listings do not quantify the effect of those features on price.
A separate Mid Iowa Auction Company listing for a 1972 4020 auction that ended June 4, 2025 shows a “Sold Price” field in the search excerpt, but not the amount. It cannot serve as a numeric comparable. More broadly, a listing, bid, asking price or incomplete sold-price record is not a substitute for a completed sale with a known amount and sale terms.

Document your tractor before setting a price
Build a factual description that lets buyers judge how closely your tractor matches other listings. AuctionTime’s results page records some details inconsistently, and the examples vary in transmission, hydraulics, PTO, loader, serial-number information, hours shown and operating condition.
- Identity: Record the serial number and year if confirmed. Include fuel type only if you know it.
- Configuration: Note the transmission, two- or four-wheel drive, PTO, hydraulic remotes, loader and any other equipment included in the sale.
- Hours: Give the hour-meter reading as displayed. Keep it separate from documented total hours or hours since an overhaul, if you have records for those.
- Condition: Describe what starts and operates, what you checked, and what does not work. A tractor described as starting, running and operating is materially different from one with a nonworking lift.
- Evidence: Photograph identification plates, controls, tires, the engine area, leaks, known damage and included equipment. Make clear what is included and what is not.
Avoid broad claims such as “everything works” unless an actual inspection supports them. Specific statements about checked functions and known faults are more useful to a buyer and make comparisons more meaningful.

How to compare your 4020 with others
- Start with recent, nearby examples. Search for 4020 listings and completed auction records from your region and a recent period. The AuctionTime page has dated 2026 examples, but it is not a complete sample of sales or prices.
- Match the important details. Compare year or serial identification, fuel type, transmission, drive, hours and their provenance, operating condition, tires, hydraulics, PTO, loader and attachments. A listing missing key facts is a weaker comparison.
- Check what the price represents. Distinguish an asking price, bid, auction result and completed sale. Check whether the amount includes a buyer’s premium, taxes, loading or other costs; the reviewed pages do not provide standardized fee comparisons.
- Use multiple credible comparisons. Do not set your price from one anecdote, one asking price or an incomplete record. If you cannot find comparable completed sales with disclosed amounts and terms, say so rather than presenting a precise market range as established.
Choose a sale route by likely net proceeds, not headline price
Auction listings confirm that 4020s are sold at auction, but the available sources do not compare auction, private sale, consignment or trade-in proceeds. A higher advertised or winning price does not necessarily mean more money in your pocket once fees, transport and other costs are considered.
Before choosing a route, compare the factors that affect your likely net and the effort required:
