A crypto bull run is a sustained period of rising cryptocurrency prices and broadly positive market sentiment. It is a common market description, not an official classification: there is no universal percentage gain, duration, or market-breadth threshold that defines one. A bull run describes what the market appears to be doing; it does not mean prices are fairly valued or that gains will continue.

What does “bull run” mean in crypto?

In market language, a “bull” expects prices to rise, while a “bear” expects them to fall. A crypto bull run is therefore a stretch in which cryptocurrency prices trend upward and optimism about the market strengthens. The phrase can refer to the market broadly or to a particular asset, such as Bitcoin; those are not necessarily the same thing.

No official rule establishes how much prices must rise, how long they must rise, or how many assets must participate before the period qualifies. Treat the term as shorthand for a perceived market phase, rather than a precise measurement or guarantee of future performance.

How can you tell whether prices are rising?

Commentators commonly look at price trends, trading activity, participation across assets, and market sentiment when describing a possible bull run. These are observations, not a validated formula for identifying one or predicting what happens next. A sharp rise in one token does not establish that the entire crypto market is in a bull run.

When comparing market periods, specify the asset, the data source, the dates and measurement window, and the metric being compared. Price magnitude, duration, market breadth, and volatility are useful comparison dimensions, but they are not official criteria. Bitcoin’s history should not be treated as a timetable for Bitcoin’s next move or as a cycle that every other cryptocurrency follows.

What do Bitcoin’s historical price ranges show?

A company’s SEC-filed annual report, filed in 2026, gives these approximate Bitcoin market-price ranges in its principal market for three fiscal years ending September 30:

Fiscal year ended Approximate Bitcoin price range
September 30, 2023 $15,500–$31,900
September 30, 2024 $26,500–$73,800
September 30, 2025 $58,900–$124,500

These are company-reported historical ranges for the stated fiscal years, not current quotes, complete market-cycle boundaries, or forecasts. They illustrate how wide Bitcoin’s price movement can be; they do not establish a repeatable schedule for future rises or declines.

Does Bitcoin’s halving cause a bull run?

Bitcoin’s mining reward was reduced from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC on April 19, 2024, according to the company’s SEC-filed annual report. A halving changes the reward paid to miners for producing blocks; it does not guarantee a favorable Bitcoin price response. The same filing cautions that price changes around halvings may not be favorable or compensate for the reduced mining reward.

What are the risks of investing during a bull run?

Rising prices and optimism do not remove the risks of crypto investing. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy warned on March 23, 2023, that “Investments in crypto asset securities can be exceptionally risky, and are often volatile.” Risks identified by the SEC include:

  • Sharp or unpredictable price moves, including losses after a rapid rise.
  • Illiquidity, which can make it difficult to sell when or at the price you want.
  • Issuer or platform insolvency, default, or interruptions to withdrawals.
  • Fraud, hacking, and malware.
  • Limited investor protections compared with some traditional financial products.

Bitcoin and other virtual-currency-related investments also carry risks such as dramatic exchange-rate fluctuations and security concerns. An older SEC alert notes that Bitcoin holdings do not have protections equivalent to insured bank deposits or many brokerage securities accounts. Because that alert is older, check current laws and a provider’s terms for present-day operational protections.

Does buying a Bitcoin or Ether ETP make the investment less speculative?

No. An exchange-traded product (ETP) changes how an investor obtains exposure; it does not make the underlying crypto asset non-speculative. In its September 9, 2024, investor bulletin, the SEC said: “Investors should know that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.” Crypto assets and their underlying designs can vary significantly, and crypto assets are not widely accepted as payment. Consider the product’s structure and risks separately from the risks of the asset it tracks.

What is the current U.S. regulatory context?

On March 17, 2026, the SEC issued an interpretation addressing how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions. It is time-sensitive U.S. regulatory context, not a definition of a bull run and not an assurance that any particular asset complies with the law. The SEC release summarizes the interpretation; the underlying SEC material is needed for precise legal analysis.
